I was wondering....does the Archives accept stories with any SW characters on Earth itself. Not for a crossover, but for humor?

Nope. Earth, for all intents and purposes, does not exist. The closer you get to even alluding that there is an Earth, the slipperier the ground beneath your fic's feet gets, regardless of genre :)

That is correct. And in a quick update it seems like the e-mail is working again for me. If anyone is still having a problem with it let us know.

Hmm, should I resend a beta request I just sent, then? Or wait and see?

First off, great idea for a thread; very helpful. :)

Here's a question regarding the Archive's Time Periods. In light of the new post-NJO EU material, where is the break between New Jedi Order Era and Far (SW) Future? For example, 40 years post-RotJ is after the New Jedi Order, but doesn?t seem to be ?outside the life spans of the established characters?.

Actually, we were just discussing this! The thought was to add an era called "Legacy" (matching wookieepedia's definition). Other suggestions were post-NJO, for Dark Nest trilogy and the Legacy of the Force, leaving Legacy comics for Far Future.

I think we'd actually love to hear suggestions on this as well, as we were discussing it in conjunction with character additions. :D

Well, I think the chronologically latest EU I've read was a Zahn or X-wing book. So take my opinion with a barrel of salt. :p

But to me, basing my knowledge on wookieepedia and JC culture ooze, the Legacy comics seem pretty far removed from Legacy of the Force ("Legacy" is apparently the new "Dark" :p). By the comics' time, the NJO characters are pretty much all dead (I assume). If someone tells me their story is about Han and Luke and the Galactic Alliance, I get a different vibe than I do if they tell me it's about Luke's grandson and a new Empire. The same kind of difference I get between, say, Prequels and Classic Trilogy.

The Legacy comics are in fact exactly the kind of concept I think of when I think of Far Future. So I'd personally side with post-NJO as post-TUF up to and including the Legacy of the Force series.

But that is all just my (very) humble opinion!

Actually, Luke (as a Force ghost) and the Galactic Alliance and R2-D2 are all in the Legacy comics, which start only 125 years after RotJ. With KOTOR being 4,000 years before the Saga, 100 years doesn't seem that far removed, IMHO. [face_peace]

Tell me about it. To make matters worse, there's Legacy of the Jedi, which runs from Dooku's apprenticeship through Anakin Skywalker's, and while this is purely a personal problem I keep trying to interpret LoE, short for Labyrinth of Evil as... well, you can probably guess.

Yeah, I got the same 'Unable to Connect' message. So, I guess something is up with the hardware. [face_plain]

Some good points. Then again, Prequels and Classic Trilogy are divided by, what, twenty years? It's all over the place. [face_thinking] Reflect further on this, I will. :p

...And I'm getting the error too. It must be on TFN's end?

It glitches like this every now and then. I wish I could be helpful and fix it or at least explain why, but anything more complex than html coding a story is beyond me. If neither Herman nor Mariah knows how to fix this once they get online, one of us will contact Anthony and see what can be done. :)

I e-mailed Anthony. Either he is doing something with the page or it's the server. When I hear something I'll let you know.

Well, if it's working, your requests should come up in the beta readers' email inboxes. So, if you are signed up or if you talk to somebody who is, you'll be able to see when it goes through.

Well, judging by the looks of things, it didn't work. So I wasted my time again, twice.

Like everything, it helps to know people so you don't have to go around begging. Nice reminder. [face_mischief]

I'll be you've been around the boards long enough to know at least two people who would be willing to beta. And we do have our very own beta list on these forums, and a lot of those betas are willing and able to beta for Archive submission. Just do what a lot of us do...ask friends on the boards whose writing we admire. :)

Well, I never got any responses, so it looks like the beta request list is still down.

The beta list is actively moderated, which means that nothing goes through until I personally go in and send the mail through the system. We've been on this system for a couple of years now. If it wasn't for this measure, there would be at least fifty spam messages for every legit e-mail that went through, and nobody needs that much herbal Viagra.

With the multitude of e-mail issues, I've been a bit lax in sending out messages, mostly due to the fact that each time I forward one through the system, I get a few hundred "undeliverable" messages flooding back to my inbox.

I'll go through the list this evening when I get home and forward the requests through.

Even though I'm staff, I wouldn't use the beta reader list. It worked great when the Archive first opened, when we had no WR, let alone a thread dedicated to beta reading, and there were fewer people signed up, most of whom were JC regulars and experienced beta readers. Now JCers have much more efficient resources. The list is still helpful, though, for people who aren't JCers (you guys don't get to see all our submissions - a great deal of them are from non-JCers) or as a last resort for JCers.

Speaking of submitting, submit stuff, people. The Atty grows bored [face_plain]

Ah, I see. More mess than it's worth for the most part. :p

Oh well, couldn't hurt to try. Thanks. :D

That's why I went for the mailing list. I don't have that kind of access, which is frustrating.

You have readers. So you have resources. That's how I found most of my first betas (and they're still my betas!) I also asked the very first writer I read on these boards and she was kind enough to say she would beta. I didn't know it at the time, but I also got a great friend in the bargain. :)

Seriously, if you have someone who regularly replies to your work (and you do) then ask them to beta. Especially if you think they'll know what to look for and have the writing/editing skills needed. All they can do is say no. :p

So the resources are there, you just have to be willing to make the effort to ask. Even if someone doesn't have the time at the moment, they're usually flattered that you asked. :)

See, I already know that I'll get a "no" in advance. I have readers, yes, but they aren't friends. You don't ask people to beta for you unless they're a friend or decent accquaintance first. That's why I went to the mailing list. :

Knowing people is great when you actually *know* them, not just when you know their names. Does that make any sense?

But Snerd is the man with the plan, as it appears, so hopefully he can work some magic with the system.
