?The Sith always betray one another. . . . I?m sure you?ll learn that soon enough.?

The overthrow of the Republic is complete. The Separatist forces have been smashed, the Jedi Council nearly decimated, and the rest of the Order all but destroyed. Now absolute power rests in the iron fist of Darth Sidious?the cunning Sith lord better known as the former Senator, now Emperor, Palpatine. But more remains to be done. Pockets of resistance in the galaxy must still be defeated and missing Jedi accounted for . . . and dealt with. These crucial tasks fall to the Emperor?s ruthless enforcer, Darth Vader. In turn, the Dark Lord has groomed a lethal apprentice entrusted with a top-secret mission: to comb the galaxy and dispatch the last of his masters? enemies, thereby punctuating the dark side?s victory with the Jedi?s doom.

Since childhood, Vader?s nameless agent has known only the cold, mercenary creed of the Sith. His past is a void; his present, the carrying out of his deadly orders. But his future beckons like a glistening black jewel with the ultimate promise: to stand beside the only father he has ever known, with the galaxy at their feet. It is a destiny he can realize only by rising to the greatest challenge of his discipleship: destroying Emperor Palpatine.

The apprentice?s journeys will take him across the far reaches of the galaxy, from the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk to the junkyard planet of Raxus Prime. On these missions, the young Sith acolyte will forge an unlikely alliance with a ruined Jedi Master seeking redemption and wrestle with forbidden feelings for his beautiful comrade, Juno Eclipse. And he will be tested as never before?by shattering revelations that strike at the very heart of all he believes and stir within him long-forgotten hopes of reclaiming his name . . . and changing his destiny.

Given the somewhat unique nature of TFU, and in an effort to consolidate/limit the number of sticky threads we have at any given time, I'm gonna combine the release discussion threads for these two works as an experiment since they are essentially the same story, and will more easily facilitate the inevitable compare and contrast between the two.

I wonder if the SA survives? You would think that LucasArts would leave the door open for a sequel to the game if it sells well enough. Another mystery is how will the book approach some of the more exotic Force powers seen in the game. A few examples I think of right the bat in this regard is the opponent who builds a exoskeleton from junk, the SA charging up foes who explode on contact with others, and the famous Star Destroyer crash landing. Also, will there be any additional background given on Darth Desolous, Darth Phobos or any other Sith Lords in general?

This is definitely a must read for myself.

Good idea Quest. Hope it doesn't get confusing and turn into two separate discussions on the same thread! LOL.

Anyway, so basically Vader replaces the child he lost in Padme with the Force-sensitive child he discovers named Starkiller? And we get an idea of what Vader would have done with Luke had Luke joined him at Cloud City? You know, that doesn't sound half bad...

Also, I think I heard somewhere that Even Piell is in the story? I hope he gets sliced and diced! That guy was one pathetic looking Jedi Master!!

I didn't realize that the Graphic Novel was an original story. [face_dancing] That's actually fantastic. Now I don't have to worry about resisting the temptation to read it before completing the game. The book I can probably hold off on, but I was planning on reading the Graphic Novel soon.

As for the game, anyone else getting it for the Wii? I really want to buy and play this game. It just seems so exciting, even though I haven't bought a video game in about five years. I'm lucky we have a Wii here at my student house. :p

Predictions for the novel: Since Sean Williams is a crazy Australian, the word "baleful" will be used noticeably often, just as it was all throughout Force Heretic!

I had heard it was more like a film adaptation ala ROTS than a semi-original story ala SOTE.

Dang, I forgot this was coming out so soon. I'm not going to play the game (lacking the time and inclination) so I'm depending on the adaptations. Frankly I'm skeptical of the entire Secret Apprentice plotline, but I trust Blackman and Williams so I'm on board.

I'm especially looking forward to the novel as it's been a while since we've had a new prequel hardcover--the last one being, I believe, Outbound Flight in Jan 06.

Technically, "The Clone Wars" by Karen Traviss comes out before this one.

    Oop, good catch.

OK, how about "a new prequel hardcover that I will pay money for instead of getting at the library"? [face_whistling]

EDIT: That probably reads as unnecessarily harsh, but I don't think there's any nice way of saying that I mentally wrote off the KT adaptation a long time ago. [face_tired]

I'm highly anticipating this one...but would like to be spoiled first before I might make the plunge. I'm looking forward to finding out about the exact nature of Starkiller's relationship with Juno Eclipse, the inner conflict between ideologies (Rebel/Jedi and Imperial/Sith), what revelations there might be etc. How much Maris Brood kicks derriere. And actually, all of us Aussies are crazy, Jeff, not just the one. ;)

here we go: the novel is very very well written but it is no Stover, traviss or denning style (which is not bad). without spoiling anything yet, it has lots of surprises and cool turns storywise, very unexpected ones with heavy impact on the backstory of certain star wars key elements. but i promise, you'll like it.

the author rules and includes nice eu tidbits, and the fights, and characters are really well portrayed, if not to say awesome. the jedi enemies especially have very interesting ... well i'll post that later in the spoiler topic.

the perspective is very pro-imperial in the beginning, with the empires pov on the clone wars, jedi traitors, etc. and that explains a lot and is pretty cool. though it is hinted at that povs might change...

The synopsis is big on flowery words and dramatic opera. Lets see if Williams rivets the keel for sailing.

    spoilers...

Proxy the cool Holodroid was built by Vader in Anakin-esque fashion

Vader has a secret level on the yet unfinished Executor with his most secret installations.
he also has a secret experimental ship he uses for imprisioning and enhancing or experimenting with several prisioners and lifeforms. not even emperor palpatine knows about it

The Author really adds here and there well researched EU tidbits, like the ugnaught subculture of Cloud City bespin, Nar Shadda and vertical city, etc.

thw tie facility there was allowed and invited by the nar shadda government to get more work for their population and to bribe officers and get imperial technology, though the empire brought their own troops and workers and so they had nothing of it. (so no continuity trouble with independent nar shadda anti imperial in the later han solo trilogy)

Raxus Prime features a jedi temple dublicate in real size built from scrap by droids and droid ingenieur Jedi Master Paratus. he even rebuilt droids looking like the jedi council members that are adept in lightsaber fight and styles. pretty awesome scenes... and no uberpowered or unbelievable stuff, well reseasoned story that fits. (Iron Knights anyone? well one can dream!)

    ...

    MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD; BEWARE

after one third of the book the emperor discovers Vaders betrayal and Vader has to kill Starkiller... lightsaber through stomache, and sent flying into vacuum of space. later he is rescued and rebuilt by vader, barely alive. vader sents him off to a new mission: find the enemies of the empire and unite them to fight the emperor. while he will be distracted with this rebellion, we will strike at him, now that he thinks you are dead. in short... and I am not yet through the whole book... it looks like starkiller is the one being uniting the mistrusting rebel fractions into THE REBELLION we know of. indirectly this indicates Vader started the downfall of the empire himself (very choosen one esque)

PS: Starkiller is not uber-powered in the novel, he is awesome and can do big stuff but compared to the prices he pays, all is believable.

    Cool stuff; thanks!

    Questions, though.

How is he rebuilt? Are you talking like...cyborgnetic, like Vader?
Have they named the apprentice in the book anything other than Starkiller?
Can you tell us anything new about Kota?

rebuilt like still looking human but Juno suspects some cybernetic parts, but he is not encased like vader. yet starkiller feels his hands and only thinks his stomache got some parts. he is only named apprentice or starkiller so far

kota is cool, wanting to lead vader into a trap... starkiller comes and he is furious. he likes alcohol later after starkiller blinded him with his sabre. kota faked his death by jumping out of a window, but later starkiller finds him again when he goes to unite the enemies of the empire. he wants to learn what vader didn´t teach or couldn´t. a vision during near-death made him curious, he is a darksider, but now he wants both sides for his mission.

and there's romance brewing between him and Juno Eclipse!!! he thinks love is a distraction but likes her, trying to ignore it. juno is hot for him yet fears him after she spied on him and vader hearing their secret plans

Wow I... actually quite like those spoilers.

I think I'm having an identity crisis.

(Though the one thing I'm a bit queasy about is this idea that Vader got the ball rolling for the Rebellion.)

Edit: Well, I'm not sure if I like them so much as I'm not horrifically offended by them. I'm a little "huh?" about the whole "robotic Jedi constructs" thing, too.
