I just saw on the news that the Old Man of the Mountain collapsed overnight. This really sucks. It was such a cool site to see. Have any of you seen it? I have many times.

It was a natural formation on the side of a mountain that looked like a face of a man up in the mountains area of New Hampshire.

I saw it once. It's a shame it fell.

I drove a trip up to Franconia Notch today and we saw where the Old Man used to be. There are a couple of interesting articles there explaining why he collapsed; apparently the butt-cold winter is what did him in. Condensation made its way into the cracks in the stone and froze so solid that it widened the cracks, causing the bottom rock to fall and the rest of the profile to follow. *sigh* 'Twas rather sad to see. :( I think it was the former caretaker who noted, "God put him there, God will take him away when the time comes."

He will live forever on the New Hampshire state quarter.

I just hope 50 - 100 years from now kids won't be like "Whats the Old Man of the Mountain?"

::points up at that very question at the top of this thread:: :p

He'll certainly live on the quarter, the licence plate, the shoulder patches, the state-route signs, the roadside notices, the highway tokens, the state police cruisers, and just about everything else from New Hampshire. 'Tis a shame that most of the population wants him to rest in peace, but it's impractical to try to salvage and reposition the stones.

Actually, I heard that they are gonna remove the Old Man's face from a lot of that stuff (ie: tokens, highway signs, etc).
