The Olympian Chronicles
A Greek Mythology Game

Back in a simpler time, after the rule of the Titians, Gods and Goddesses were said to roam the earth, pouring their favor or discontent into the human race. Each deity had a personality, and a responsibility? and each peoples had a patron God or Goddess.

In this game we will be using both mythology and historical stories, along with our own bit of fiction, to tell their stories.

There are twelve Gods and Goddesses on Mt. Olympus that are considered the twelve main deities. They are as follows:

? Zeus
? Poseidon
? Hades
? Hestia
? Hera
? Ares
? Athena
? Apollo
? Aphrodite
? Hermes
? Artemis
? Hephaestus
These are who we will be playing as (if you really want to play as another God/Goddess, you must talk to me about it)

All character sheets are to be sent to myself or my co-GM LeiaHair to be approved.

No God moding other characters!!!! (Yes, we?re playing as gods, but there is no need to control other people?s characters.)

Play responsibly. Remember, you?re not the only person in the game, and give other players a chance to react to your post.

Sexual themes are allowed (because we all know what sort these gods were?) but remember? keep it clean. TOS!!!!! Alluding to something is a lot better than saying it bluntly.

My word and LeiaHair?s word is final! No arguing. (Hopefully, we don?t have to use this rule.)

--God of: The supreme god of the Olympians and God of the Sky
---Parents: Cronos and Rhea
----Personality: Strong willed, calm, and flirtatious.
-----Physical Appearance (as the other gods/goddesses would see): Thick, curly, silver hair and beard. Large blue eyes under bushy grey eyebrows. Muscular, and tanned. Large build.
------Bio (Creation Story): Zeus was the youngest son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. When he was born, his father Cronus intended to swallow him as he had all of Zeus's siblings: Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Demeter and Hera. But Rhea hid the newborn in a cave on Mount Dicte in Crete. (To this day, the guides at the "cave of Zeus" use their flashlights to cast shadow puppets in the cave, creating images of baby Zeus from the myth.)

When he had grown up, Zeus caused Cronus to vomit up his sisters and brothers, and these gods joined him in fighting to wrest control of the universe from the Titans and Cronus, their king. Having vanquished his father and the other Titans, Zeus imprisoned most of them in the underworld of Tartarus.

Then he and his brothers Poseidon and Hades divided up creation. Poseidon received the sea as his domain, Hades got the Underworld and Zeus took the sky. Zeus also was accorded supreme authority on earth and on Mount Olympus.

-----Physical Appearance: His True form is horrid, he is cloaked in dark rags from head to toe and under neath the damp rags is a skeleton form, His bones are sharp and cold to the touch and eyes are bottemless pits of suffering. But he ussaly takes the form of a egyptian Child.
------Bio (Creation Story):
Hades is the lord of the dead and ruler of the nether world, which is referred to as the domain of Hades or, by transference, as Hades alone. He is the son of Cronus and Rhea. When the three sons of Cronus divided the world among each other, Hades was given the underworld, while his brothers Zeus and Poseidon took the upperworld and the sea respectively. For a while Hades ruled the underworld together with Persephone, whom he had abducted from the upperworld, but Zeus ordered him to release Persephone back into the care of her mother Demeter. However, before she left he gave her a pomegranate and when she ate of it, it bound her to the underworld forever.

Hades sits on a throne made of ebony, and carries a scepter. He also has a helmet, given to him by the Cyclopes, which can make him invisible. Hades rules the dead, assisted by various (demonic) helpers, such as Thanatos and Hypnos, the ferryman Charon, and the hound Cerberus. Many heroes from Greek mythology have descended into the underworld, either to question the shades or trying to free them. Although Hades does not allow his subjects to leave his domain, on several occasions he has granted permission, such as when Orpheus requested the return of his beloved Eurydice.

Hades possesses the riches of the earth, and is thus referred to as 'the Rich One'. Possibly also because -- as Sophocles writes -- 'the gloomy Hades enriches himself with our sighs and our tears'. Of all the gods, Hades is the one who is liked the least and even the gods themselves have an aversion of him. People avoided speaking his name lest they attracted his unwanted attention. With their faces averted they sacrificed black sheep, whose blood they let drip into pits, and when they prayed to him, they would bang their hands on the ground. The narcissus and the cypress are sacred to him.

[image=http://altreligion.about.com/library/graphics/hera2.jpg]
(The one in the middle.)
------Bio (Creation Story): Hera was the greatest of all the Olympian goddesses. She was the daughter of Cronus and Rhea, and the sister and lawful wife of the supreme god Zeus. Cronus swallowed Hera immediately after the birth and she lived inside of him until liberated by her youngest brother Zeus. During the struggle between Zeus and Cronus, the goddess Rhea entrusted Hera to Oceanus and Tethys, who brought her up. Other traditions claim that Hera was brought up by Temenus (1), or by the daughters of Asterion.

Hera and Zeus started a relationship in the days when Cronus still ruled the world, but the formal wedding ceremony took place after the victory of the Olympians in the war against the Titans. There are many versions of how Zeus and Hera first met. According to one of them, Zeus won Hera by a trick. He transformed himself into a cuckoo, started a storm with a rain and landed on the hill where Hera was talking a walk. When she sat down to rest, the frozen and soaked with rain cuckoo flew onto her lap. The goddess felt sorry for the bird and warmed it by putting it against her breast. Then, Zeus showed his real face. Hera at first resisted, but then she agreed to become his lover only after he had promised to marry her. The sacred marriage was solemnly celebrated on Olympus, in the presence of all gods who brought the precious presents. Gaea gave them the tree of life with the golden apples, which Hera found so beautiful that she planted it in the garden of the gods, on the shores of the Ocean (see Hesperides). Some other traditions mention the islands Crete and Euboea as the possible places of the Zeus' and Hera's marital ceremony. Hera had given Zeus three children: daughters Hebe and Eilithyia, and son Ares. She also gave a parthenogenetical birth to Hephaestus.

As the master of the Heaven and the Zeus' lawful wife, Hera was the protector of the marriage and she used to punish those who didn't respect it. She herself had never committed an adultery. However, that wasn't the case with her husband, who was constantly unfaithful. Unable to prevent the numerous love affairs of Zeus, jealous Hera got the cruel and violent revenges not only on her rivals, but also on their children. For example, she tried to prevent the birth of Apollo and Artemis when Leto was in labour. She also tried to hold up the birth of Heracles, whom she later persecuted until his death (see Alcmene, Heracles). She persecuted Io too, she caused Semele's death, and she cruelly punished Semele's sister Ino for having cared for the infant Dionysus, a child from Semele's union with Zeus. Because of her acts, Zeus sometimes got very angry. Thus, for oppressing Heracles, he punished Hera by hanging her from Mt. Olympus by her wrists with an anvil fastened to each foot.

Hera had a very vindictive temper, not only when her conjugal honour was in question, but in other occasions as well. Because Antigone (3) had boasted of having hair more beautiful than Hera's, Hera turned her locks into serpents. On another occasion, she was arguing with her husband about who got more pleasure from sex, men or women. Zeus said that women did, Hera thought that men enjoyed it more. Then, they consulted the prophet Tiresias who said that if pleasure o

---Parents: Zues and Leto
----Personality: Light-hearted yet serious he loves having a good time but will not hesitate in a fight.
-----Physical Appearance: http://www.absoluteanime.com/cyborg_009/apollo.gif
------Bio (Creation Story):
When Hera discovered that Leto was pregnant and that Zeus was the father, she banned Leto from giving birth on "terra-firma", or the mainland, or any island at sea. In her wanderings, Leto found the newly created floating island of Delos, which was neither mainland nor a real island, and she gave birth there. The island was surrounded by swans. Afterwards, Zeus secured Delos to the bottom of the ocean. This island later became sacred to Apollo.

In his youth, Apollo killed the chthonic dragon Python, which lived in Delphi beside the Castalian Spring because Python had attempted to rape Leto while she was pregnant with Apollo and Artemis. This was the spring which emitted vapors that caused the oracle at Delphi to give her prophesies. Apollo killed Python but had to be punished for it, since Python was a child of Gaia.

Apollo has his ominous aspects, too. Marsyas, who dared challenge him to a music contest, was flayed after he lost. Apollo brought down arrows of plague upon the Greeks because they dishonored his priest Chryses. Apollo's arrows of plague struck Niobe, who, excessively proud of her seven sons and seven daughters, had disparaged Apollo's mother, Leto, for having only two children (Apollo and Artemis).

When Zeus struck down Apollo's son, Asclepius, with a lightning bolt for resurrecting the dead (transgressing Themis by stealing Hades's subjects), Apollo in revenge killed the Cyclops, who had fashioned the bolt for Zeus. Apollo would have been banished to Tartarus forever, but was instead sentenced to one year of hard labor as punishment, thanks to the intercession of his mother, Leto. During this time he served as shepherd for King Admetus of Pherae in Thessaly. Admetus treated Apollo well, and, in return, the god conferred great benefits on Admetus.

Apollo helped Admetus win Alcestis, the daughter of King Pelias and later convinced the Fates to let Admetus live past his time, if another took his place. But when it came time for Admetus to die, his elderly parents, whom he had assumed would gladly die for him, refused to cooperate. Instead, Alcestis took his place, but Heracles managed to "persuade" Thanatos, the god of death, to return her to the world of the living.

----Personality: Slightly narcissistic. The Mortals that dare not lay down a cow for sacrifice shall bear the terrible power of the
Seas. If this requirement is met, Poseidon is happy, and the Seas will grant the mortals easy passage.
-----Physical Appearance (as the other gods/goddesses would see): Toga, Toga, Toga! Well, tattered of course, to match his stormy
seas. Flowing white beard, that has no sign of organization, but is pure in color.
[image=http://www.timelessmyths.com/classical/gallery/poseidon.jpg]
------Bio (Creation Story):
Just as with Zeus, Poseidon was terrorized by his father when younger. The Titan, Kronos, ate much of his young, but the future God of the
Sea was saved by his quick thinking mother, Rhea.

Raised on Rhodes, Poseidon grew, and eventually aided his brothers and sisters in taking back the earth from the Titans.

Zeus (who knows who put that bloke in charge) divided the land up between himself, Hades, and Poseidon. Poseidon truly didn't care that Zeus claimed the title of "Leader of the Gods," since command of Earthquakes and the
Oceans suited much to Poseidon's fancy.

Name: Athena

-Gender: female

--God or Goddess of: crafts, domestic arts, war, and wisdom

---Parents: Zeus and Metis (his first wife)

----Personality: Athena, as a goddess of both wisdom and war, is pragmatic and curt. She finds loyalty flattering and is quick to dole punishment for misgivings. She used her knowledge of warfare and peacemaking to win the city of Athens from Poseidon ? the citizens preferred her gift of an olive tree to his salt water stream.

-----Physical Appearance (as the other gods/goddesses would see): Tall and slender, like nearly all Olympians, Athena carries herself with the grace and confidence of a warrior. Her dark hair is worn away from her face with leather cords or decorative gold bands. Dressed mostly in white linens, Athena dons her helmet, shield and breast plate only when visiting her favored mortals on the battle field. Her fierce yet gentle beauty is punctuated by her steely grey eyes.

------Bio (Creation Story): Learning Metis was pregnant, Zeus feared her giving birth to a son who might over throw him as he did his own father. So he swallowed her, and in Zeus? head Metis began making a robe and armor for her daughter. All of the activity left Zeus with painful headaches which were relieved after Hephaestus split his head open. From his skull sprang Athena, dressed in her mother?s armor and bearing all the knowledge of Zeus.
A beautiful tactician, Athena is close friends with Nike goddess of victory. Most known for her participation in the Greeks army during the Trojan War, Athena also aided Perseus in the conquering of Medusa. The monster?s skull now graces Athena?s shield. As Zeus? favored child Athena inherited the aegis, a protective device. In the possession of Zeus the aegis was a bright-edged thundercloud, however Athena wears it on her breast plate.
Even though she is a skilled tactician and patient in the arts of war, Athena can be wrathful and hasty. When crossed by anyone, especially, Arachne and Teiresias, Athena punishes them severely. After her rage has subsided, Athena often eases the ruthlessness of her punishment.

Leto found a loophole in the curse and went to the floating isle of Delos, where she and Apollo were born.

GM OCC:

Hello, everyone. I am back. I am currently getting all the character sheets from LeiaHair... and will wait untill Wed for possible new players. But, come Wed/Thurs... I will have an Opening post up.

There's a few ways we can play this game... and I'd like feed back. LH and I talked about it last night, and came up with one be both like. But... I would like to hear what you have to say about it.

We think that it would be better to play this as a series of flashbacks within a conversation. The gods/goddesses are sitting around... perhaps lounging around (if it's within your charcter to do so) talking about their greatness... their stories from their points of view. The flash backs would be RPed as well, and who ever is telling the story would be sort of a mini GM for that time being.

The reason this would work best, is because... 1. There's so many different versions of some of these myths... and 2. Some of the Gods and Goddesses people have chosen to play come in at different times of the mythical time line.

And, we can always pull out of the story for someone to argue in real time... which could make things interesting...

I know it will seem odd to some characters because they aren't part of the story... but they can explain where they were when it happened... and why they didn't get involved... and have their own little stories within the myth.

What do you all think?

Edit: If you don't get it, I have a sample post I can send to you to help understand it better. Just PM me to ask for it.

She would support war when it was over issues of justice. Ares, on the other hand, was not concerned with justice. He loved the thrill of battle. Ares lived among the people of Thrace, who were known for their constant wars and battles between tribes.

Ares was seen often accompanied by four other deities. The four deities were Diemos, the personification of fear; Enyo, goddess of battle; Eris, the personification of discord; and Phobos, the personification of terror. Ares, along with his companions, escalated the ferocity of battle.

In several battles, Areas was forced off the battlefields by humans who wanted to make peace. He was not well liked either by humans or by the gods. Even his mother and father disliked him.

CmdrMitthrawnuruodo has suggested that we perhaps play as the following:

The idea you posted about how we should go about the game I doubt is suitable for this game. Its assuming the people know the Gods in detail. Why not approach the game like hollywood did with Hercules and Xena the Warrior Princess shows?

Rather than retell the past and have some players sit out until its their turn, why not just come up with a plot which the gods currently taken would be interested in?

Prometheus is most renown for the creation of Man after the shape of the gods. After shaping clay figures, Prometheus journeyed to Earth, where Zeus breathed life into them. The figures that Prometheus had created became Man and honored him.

OOC: I'd have to agree with Mitt. That plot just seems restricting. Something along the lines of God Of War, Hercules, etc. would be more appropriate. Take the Greek Myth setting, but craft a story for the players, since I doubt many know these legends in enough detail to play out the game. There doesn't have to be a major overall plot, just something for the basis of the game. And there's alot to pull from for that.

Alright, people.... here's the deal. I have a 3-3 vote on these two ideas (not including myself). Unless I hear more from the other players by friday night, I'm going to go with idea 1, just because I don't know anything about God Of War.

I'm moving the opening post untill Saturday. This is due to the lack of posting character sheets, and a few new players just joining... and the whole game play thing...

So. Let's here the discussion if you really care aobut how you want to play this.

Thank you Eme, OW21, and Mitth for your verbalizations. (But let's not make this into a GOd of War disscussion.) If you want to explain God of War to me, PM me.

Thanks everyone, and I can't wait to get it started.

No GoW. This isnt a game where Ares is against Kraytos.

And no to idea 1. You WILL lose players fast.

OOC: You won't lose players.

Holonet, you need to just post your sample post. I think it will help people see it. It's a very confusing idea... and you could've said it a bit better.

Trust me CmndrMitth, it's better than it sounds. You're afriad we might lose players b/c they don't know a lot about mythology... and I agree, that is true. But obviously the players know something about their character, otherwise they wouldn't have picked it. Holonet isn't asking for us to know everything about the god/goddess... just some of their more famous stories. It would be my guess that people interested in this game would know SOMETHING about mythology.

Shoot... I don't know all that much.

I agree, no God of War. But, I think idea 1 could really work.

Just... post that post, Holonet.

EDIT: Shoot! I have the post here at school from when you e-mailed it to me. I'll just post it.

The following is a mock post by Holonet, who expresses (in the email) that not enough time was spent on the content/writing portion... that it was just to get the idea accross.

Mt. Olympus, Throne Room

Zeus squeezed his wife?s slender hand and smiled towards her. ?I remember when we first met, my love.? Ignoring the giggles from the other gods, he turned back to face them. ?I remember when I asked her to marry me... Her beauty was beyond anything I could have dreamed of. I knew when I saw her that I HAD to have her.

?The day had been beautiful? the sun just barely above the horizon. The morning breeze caused her beautiful locks of brown to flutter in the wind. But I could not win her like that? no? She was going to take something more elaborate to win her over. So, calling up a storm, I shifted into a beautiful cuckoo??

Zeus?s wings fluttered quickly, the rain pelting down on his brown feathers. From below only his white breast (stripped with black lines) could be seen with in the grey clouds. The winds made it overly hard to control his direction. But, he kept his beady orange eyes on his goal? the beautiful goddess Hera? his sister.

Determined, and with a bit of a push from a southern wind he had called up, Zeus the Cuckoo speed quickly towards the goddess. He called out a sad song as he approached, and quickly flew into her embrace, deep within her breast.

Oh how she pitied the bird. It had been caught up in this horrible storm. Stroking it gently, she whispered words of comfort. ?Shh. It?s okay. I will keep you out of the rain.? Kissing it lightly on the head, she held it closer to her heart. ?Don?t you worry.?

Suddenly, the small bird shifted into a beautiful god, his skin radiating with the shimmer only a divine being had. His mighty arms wrapped around her, pulling her close. ?I must have you?? He said, kissing down her neck. He could feel her giddiness building. Yes, he knew he?d have her now. Slowly, he loosened her white, silken robe, kissing along her shoulder after it, his hand gently caressing her back and neck.

Hera giggled, and ran her hand down his chest. ?No? I can?t? We can?t do this.?

And she wouldn?t? not unless he promised to marry her. Hera had never, nor would ever, commit adultery. She hated it, and punished any mortal who did commit it severely.

Oh! But his kisses made her heart flutter? his warm hands upon her back and neck, and breasts. ?Please? I can?t.?

?You can?t?? Zeus said, kissing along her collar bone now. He?d do anything to have her now. The god slowly lowered Hera to the soft grass, the winds of the storm abating by his will. ?Tell me? how can I make this happen? What can I do to make it happen! I?ll do anything, just tell me??

------Bio (Creation Story): Eros is responsible for the embrace of Uranus and Gaia, and a manner of other couplings. He is one of the oldest gods, but is often referred to as Aphrodite?s attendant. Eros used two kinds of arrows: golden ones with dove feathers to arouse love, or leaden arrows with owl feathers for indifference. Eros himself fell in love with Psyche.

No. My primary concern is not a players knowledge on the god but the fact that players are going to have to sit and wait for their turn. Your mock post is a prime example of that. That story only involved Hera and Zeus and no other god. How can you keep an interest in the game if half of your players are waiting to participate?

Okay, everyone just hold on one moment.

To the God of War people, the answer is no. I thought there was a specific way it told the story, I didn't know you were talking about the story line it's self. No. The whole point of this game is to retell/re-examine Greek Mythology. My question was not about what, but how. How to go about this game.

Mitth, I get what your saying, and I knew you were going to say that. (Hhehehe.) I used just those two character's because I was trying to type a quick example to show LeiaHair and Morsael. The whole idea behind the exaple was to show how it would jump between Real Time and the flash backs.

My intention was that we would show each character's plot in the story... whether or not they're in the 'real' greek mythology.

I do understand what you're saying... and it is a concern... and it was why I wanted everyone's opinion.

I wish to continue to recieve PMs on this, but the final decision will be made friday night by myself and LeiaHair.

But please, I still want to hear from you.

Name: Psyche
-Gender: female
---Parents: mortal parents (names unknown)
----Personality: A kind goddess, devoted to her husband, Eros.
-----Physical Appearance : Originally born a mortal, Psyche?s beauty rivaled that of Aphrodite. Interpretations of her differ according to artists.

For here however: Long wavy strawberry blonde hair, green eyes, skin as soft as rose petals, five foot four. Voice as lilting as a flute.
------Bio ; People came from all around to admire Psyche and dared to compare her to the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite.

Angered by this mere mortal receiving the attention she should, Aphrodite sent her son, Eros to use his golden arrow upon Psyche an make her fall in love with the most frightening creature on earth.

Instead, spying upon Psyche as she slept, Eros accidentally pricked himself with his own arrow and fell in love with Psyche.

Psyche was very depressed, for even though many admired her, all were afraid to ask for her hand. She journeyed to the oracle of Delphi where the oracle decreed she would wed a creature feared by the gods themselves.

To make a long story short ?
Psyche was taken up to a mountain, where a wondrous palace awaited her. That evening in darkness her host greeted her. She was full of fear, but his calm voice soothed Psyche. He denied her nothing ? except to see him.

Missing her sisters, Psyche?s lover allowed them to visit her. Jealous of her new found happiness ( and the larger home) they told Psyche she must kill the hideous creature before he killed her.

Frightened, she crept into his chamber that evening, a lamp and a dagger in her hands. The light revealed her lover was not a hideous monster, but Eros, the god of love. Spying his arrows, curious Psyche examined one and pricked herself. Psyche fell in love with Eros.

A drop of hot oil fell upon Eros waking him and angered seeing the dagger in her hand and her mistrust Eros left.

Psyche traveled to Aphrodite?s temple and begged the goddess of love for her aid.
Aphrodite still jealous of Psyche gave her 3 impossible tasks to perform

1 To sort three grains, barley, wheat and millet into 3 piles by sunset.
Ants helped Psyche to fulfill her task.

2The second task was to gather golden fleece from a rare herd of sheep. The rams would surely kill Psyche, Aphrodite hoped.
A sparrow warned Psyche and advised her to gather the golden wool from the thorny bushes the sheep passed

3 The last and most dangerous task was to journey to the land of the dead and ask Queen Persephone for a little of her beauty and place it in a box.

By now, Eros had forgiven Psyche as he watched how determined she was to win back his love. He secretly helped her giving Psyche 2 gold coins and 6 honey cakes. She should speak to no one but Persephone he warned.

The coins were for the ferryman, the honey cakes for Cerberus the three headed hound of hell.

Persephone returned the box full of beauty to Psyche and curious once in the land of the living, Psyche opened the box. The box did not contain beauty but the sleep of the dead. Psyche collapsed to the ground.

Eros woke Psyche with a kiss. Eros asked permission of Zeus to marry Psyche.
Zeus gave to Psyche a cup of ambrosia which made her immortal.

Eros and Psyche were married and eventually had a daughter they named Joy.

*** Try finding a pic of Psyche that would be fitting for this RPG - difficult!***
