I think they should not even be cameos.

Any attempt to shoehorn in another story with them as main characters is doomed to failure. Film scripts concerning people entering retirement age are not really Star Wars material. Sure you have Obi Wan from the original but his role was as mentor, not main character, and he barely has screen time.

There can be a gripping story told about people past their prime stepping up to be heroes again, but it isn't really the kind of mythical story that Star Wars excels at telling.

This has been discussed a million times. But im assuming they will do a passing of the torch like Old ben and luke in ANH, Qui Gon and Obi-wan etc TPM, etc. Leaving them out in a sequel would be ridiculous.

i think its been said that JJ wanted the movie to focus on the heroes from the OT and not just a cameo

I think they should be more parent and mentor roles. An Obi-Wan or Nick Fury like presence.

There's plenty of old people in Star Wars movies. They're typically in charge of stuff but never the heroes. There's nothing to lose from letting Luke Leia and Han stick it out for another movie or two but It's obvious they'll be replaced by new primary heroes.

In most cases, a cast of middle-aged actors probably would not serve this genre well (or at least generate box-office revenue). But the case of Hamill, Fisher and Ford returning is an exception. Their characters are so popular and their return is so highly anticipated that they should comprise the main cast with the younger actors in supporting roles, who would then emerge as main characters in Episodes 8 and 9.

Personally, I believe their fantastic chemistry was underused in the OT. They really only had significant screentime together as an ensemble in ANH.

If you truly believe that Sir Alec Guinness "barely has screen time" in the original Star Wars you have never seen the original Star Wars.

And yet the prequels are full of plenty of screentime for older characters Dooku, Yoda, and Palpatine.

In fact the PT took the idea Yoda presented in TESB about "crude matter" not meaning much, ran with it, and obliterated the notion of "prime" all together. Our main Jedi figure in Menace is a middle aged man, our main villain in Clones is an elderly man, and the mastermind of the whole piece, revealed in Revenge, is only God knows how old. Yoda is obviously pushing 900, while Mace Windu is another middle aged man, not to mention other long in the tooth Jedi sprinkled throughout.

Star Wars has always, always been a multi-generational saga. If you truly think large rolls for the Big 3 are out of character for this saga, you simply don't know this saga at all.

I think for each film of the ST, they should all be apart of the central. Mix it up like the Legacy of the Force series, have the old and new generation.
