Who knows what actors and actresses were supposed to play the characters. Like Christopher Walken was suppose to play Han I believe.

Originally Carrie Fisher was cast to play "Carrie" in the movie "Carrie" but she refused to do the nude scene. It was worked out so Fisher and Spacek would switch roles.

Kurt Russell auditioned for Han and William Katt auditioned for Luke. Their auditions are included on the tape I have, and I must say, they were both quite good, probably the next best choices Lucas could have made had he not gone with Ford and Hamill. Perry King also auditioned as Han, whom he later played in the radio dramas.

Japanese Star Wars? I'll bet George Takei would have been in there somewhere.

I thought that Toshiro Mifune was considered for the role of Obi-Wan? And wasn't Candy Clark also considered for the role of Leia?

I think Clark is on my copy of auditions. Kind of hard to tell who's who with the quality. Other Leia hopefuls include Cindy Williams (from LAVERNE & SHIRLEY) and Lisa Eilbacher from BEVERLY HILLS COP. But when you watch these auditions, it's so clear that Carrie Fisher was the only acceptable choice for Leia. Nobody else came close to matching her. I think Sissy Spacek's audition is on the tape, too.

Other auditions included Andrew Stevens and Robby Benson as Luke, and Forrest Tucker as Han.

I'd like to see these all these screen tests show up on the DVD.

Whenever they do include screentests on DVD, they just show the ones from people who were in the movie. But the real intersting thing is to see other actors trying these roles.

I guess there are some legal issues.

Propbabbly some sort of payment might be made to give to the actors. Other than that, the screentest would legally belong to the filmmakers.

As far as I know- Gerry Jenkins book is reliable in many cases? Do you know why they think its a joke?

I remember the SNL skit for the casting tests for Star Wars, it's hilareous!!! The thought of Walter Mathau playing Chewie is funny.
Mathau "What's this thing suppose to be?"
Voice from off Camera "It's a Wookie."
    Mathau "What's a Wookie?"
Voice from off Camera "Kind of like a space ape."

    Now that's comedy!

Didn't GL at some point think of having the main cast made up from midgets? I think it was to make Chewie look even taller than he is. Or something... ?[face_plain]

I heard that Richard Dreyfuss was considered to play someone but I don't know if he was gonna play Han or Luke.

Well, the SNL skit has Richard Dreyfus (played hilariously by Darrell Hammond) auditioning as C-3PO. "I told you, I didn't wanna wear the damn mask! Look, I don't need this! I was in JAWS, okay?" It's a hilarious skit, and I wish I had the whole thing. I've only got Dreyfus as 3PO, Christopher Walken as Han, and Mathau as Obi-Wan. Kevin Spacey does dead-on Walken and Mathau impressions.
