I need to rewatch the film again. I left the film thinking it was awesome, but after dwelling on it a few days my praise dropped quite a bit. Good movie, but not the mind blowing experience I remember hoping for. Definitly worthy of a sequel, but I think I fell into that group that said they liked it more than they actually did.

I know quite a few people who feel the way you do. It's not like they did a complete 180º or anything. It's more like a 45º or a 90º. I gave it a positive review when it came out, but I actually appreciated it more when I watched it again on DVD. I'd still give it a 7/10, but it's a much firmer 7/10.

I'm not sure where you go in a sequel that doesn't undermine the original and just feel like a rehash, but I'm confident that del Toro will bring something fresh to the table for a part 2.

I think a little bit of my problem is that even though I knew it was going to have a lighter tone, I'm just to used to Del Toro's darker ideas.

Basically I didn't feel there was enough Del Toro in a Del Toro movie.

Yeah, I know what you mean. At times it felt a little like a Roland Emmerich flick; particularly all the stuff with the two scientists and the Hannibal Chow character.

Poor Boyega. That's like following up your star turn in a Star Wars movie by signing on to the Wing Commander sequel.

Corvette Summer will be just the thing to take Mark Hamill's career to the next level.

Sweet news. I didn't outright love Pacific Rim as much as most people seemed to but I really appreciated what it was- cartoon characters aside, it was a film made to bring a grin to your face for a couple hours. Looking forward to seeing where they go in the sequel.

I'm unashamedly a fan of the first one. It hit me right in the "massive anime/sci fi/monster move fan" portion in my brain. Plus I genuinely enjoyed the characters. Were they archetypes, and some a bit cartoonish, sure. Did I care, heck no. Plus it had a giant robot using a cargo freighter as a club to bash a giant monster, that's just awesome.

And great news on Boyega, I hope that he and Rinko Kikuchi's Mako get to interact. That'd be an interesting dynamic I think.

As far as casting goes it's a perfect fit IMO. Boyega does indeed feel as if he could be the son of Idris Elba (don't recall a son ever being mentioned in the original, but oh well). I think they'll need an older character/actor to replace the lost gravitas, but Boyega as Heaper Pentecost or whatever? Sold.

And I think it's a goodish career move. I'm a believer in actors who land big, iconic roles early getting a second franchise ASAP. Pacific Rim is nowhere near Star Wars, but it should be big enough to help offset it a bit so that you don't look at Boyega and only think "Finn". That's a key to him being able to move on, which he most certainly has the talent to do. PR may not be Raiders of the Lost Ark, but it's certainly bigger than Corvette Summer (which, by the way, I love, thank you Rylo Ken :p).

I enjoyed being in the drift with pilots and Jaegers & Kaijus were great. However, I felt like that first film was the last in a trilogy and could have left the goofy scientists on the cutting room floor. Me, I'd like more with Cherno Alpha and its crew and ditto for Crimson Typhon. They were wasted way too fast (love the design of Cherno Alpha.) I have to say SF flavored genre films have been really clever with Soviet era Science Fiction designs lately.

I wish John and this team all the very best (I'm sure he'll be great as Idris Elba's son), I just have no desire to see a sequel.

I thought the archetypes were an intentional nod to the materials that Pacific Rim is clearly a love letter to.

I liked Pacific Rim, as it reminded me of Robot Jox, a movie way ahead of it's time.

I can't really say I'm excited for Pacific Rim 2, but I am excited for the potential of the Jaegers crossing over with Godzilla and King Kong. It's like reliving my childhood all over again.

As much as I love this movie, I think its ending was perfect enough, a sequel would probably bring down the victory and the sacrifice in the first movie.

Pacific Rim 2: needs another jaeger and pilot team like Cherno Alpha. I still love Cherno's design, so brilliantly Soviet SF.
