I hope the 3D conversion isn't a disaster. The film looks like it was murky and dark to begin with. Definitely going to see it in 2D.

Pretty sure this was shot in 3D and not converted.

Aww rats! Well I do hope it doesn't look like crap too. Sadly the IMAX version will be only shown in 3D I bet.

Yes, because it attacks New York. But I thought of Cloverfield when I saw this too.

I think it's the flying Kaiju walking around. Reminds me of a bat walking.

I...I don't think there are enough, adequate words to describe the awesomeness that this flick promises. :D:eek::D

"Promises" may be too strong a word, but I'm very optimistic. I like del Toro. I like Kaiju. Of course, del Toro is not infallible. And Ron Perlman has been in plenty of stinkers. But if you look at July, there is no real contender for the "Dark Knight Rises" slot unless it's this one. I'm not very excited about Lone Ranger. Despicable Me 2 will likely be a big family hit. R.I.P.D. looks awful.

The franchise commercial potential is...gigantic. If this is a box office smash, then it could be like the golden Toho era, only with billion dollar global hits. WB will make sequels forever. Mechs vs. Monsters ad infinitum, ad nauseam. A sequel plot can be basically any variation you can think of.

I believe young male moviegoers are desperate for something new and different, even if they don't know it, and even if the thing that's new and different is only original in the sense that it's an authentic, straight-faced tribute to the Toho-style movies without being as intimately-scaled as something like Cloverfield. There's a new generation of young males that is mostly unfamiliar with this kind of stuff. They haven't been exposed much to the old Godzilla stuff.

Didn't del Toro abandon his Lovecraft project to make this?

If Pacific Rim is a big enough success, it's possible you'll get to see that.

I could've sworn I replied this before but the Internet gods ate it up, anyhoo...

The difference being that today male young moviegoers might not be automatically turned off at the sight of men in silly costumes having clunky sillier fights on top of the silliest of miniaturized landscapes. I watched plenty of those Toho movies as a kid and the immersion factor was gone after the first few minutes. :p

I sincerely don't want a new franchise or infinite, ad nauseaum sequels out of this. I'd just settle for one incredible, balls-to-the-wall, giant-mecha vs. monster action flick that's nothing short of le -

    wait for it!

That's what everybody wants, except for WB. WB wants first an incredible, balls-to-the-wall, giant-mecha vs. monster action flick that's nothing short of legendary, and then a new franchise of infinite, ad nauseam sequels.

Pacific Rim 2 Already in the Works

There must be even more pressure on Pacific Rim to perform with Jack the Giant Slayer and Beautiful Creatures both commercial disasters.

How? How can they simply greenlight a sequel without knowing how the prequel will actually perform?

The trailers ARE awesome, yes, but audiences are fickle as hell. Maybe it'll resonate with a particular segment of the audience (like us), but perhaps other folks may dismiss it as just another Bayformers clone (unfortunate as that may be) and the movie might not make the numbers the studio wants. Here's hoping this particular bet pays off.

Cautious optimism's the key. We've been through this before. Emmerich's Godzilla was supposed to usher in a new age of Toho-style kaiju movies with blockbuster budgets and groundbreaking special effects. We all know how that turned out.
