The Phantom Menace Love/Hate Game

Okay, I admit that there are certain aspects of The Phantom Menace that I really love. At the same time there are certain aspects that I really hate. That being said...it's time for the Love/Hate Game.

LOVE: The duel with Darth Maul
HATE: The fact that the duel was so short

LOVE: The speed of Obi and Darth Maul fighting
HATE: How quickly Maul was killed like Lucas was looking for a way out of that battle.

LOVE: Natalie Portman as the Queen
HATE: A 14-year-old queen of a planet

side note: I think Lucas intended to have Amidala stay the queen therefore you would have PRINCESS Leia, but then he changed his mind.

LOVE: The scnery of Naboo
HATE: The CG Battle between the Gugans and the Battle Droids.

LOVE: The Pod Race
HATE: The retarded looking CG characters in the other pods.

LOVE: Seeing Aurra Sing in the cliffs on Tatooine
HATE: That you never see her again

LOVE: Seeing a young Anakin
HATE: The little turd that played Anakin

LOVE: The fact that the Queen had decoys
HATE: That the audience knew who the queen was all along

LOVE: Seeing the Jedi Council for the first time
HATE: The young looking Yoda

LOVE: Captain Tarples
HATE: The Gungan language

HATE: Jar Jar Binks
HATE MORE: Jar Jar Binks

LOVE: A new alien life form
HATE: A new alien life form used for silly comic relief

LOVE: Watto
HATE: Anakin trying to talk Huttese to him.

LOVE: The fact that a boy has a crush on Amidala
HATE: The horrible lines he uses talking to her.

LOVE: The visuals and style themes pertaining to each scene.
HATE: Lack of a better space battle.

LOVE: Pod Racers!!!
HATE: Length of the race scene when we knew Anakin would win (filler?).

LOVE: TUSKEN RAIDER AND JABBA CAMEOS!
HATE: No Mos Eisley cantina cameo. =\

LOVE: Blue guards on Naboo (the one's that look Roman)
HATE: No action scenes with them.

LOVE: The Phantom Menace!
HATE: The hate for The Phantom Menace as a credible movie!

I said it in the AOTC version, and I say it again: Hate is such a bad word =\.

 

Darth_Lacerus - Leia is a Princess because of her family on Alderaan. It has nothing to do with Amidala having once been a Queen. Otherwise Luke would've been a prince, right? And even though Luke was hidden, Leia only had a few fleeting memories of their mother - didn't actually know anything about her.

 

LOVE:Neeson's acting, the best in TPM

HATE:The character of Qui Gon doing all the stuff Kenobi is supposed to do (eg. meeting Anakin)

LOVE:The Jedis vs Maul duel in general

HATE:The ending of the duel (I can tolerate the laser doors)

LOVE:The CGI, which was brilliant

HATE:Jar Jar and the Gungans

 

I don't hate anything about this movie.

Not one hangup what so ever.

 

HATE: The little turd that played Anakin

Dude, you've never even met him.

(Admittedly neither have I, but even so.)

 

LOVE:MAUL

HATE:HIM KILLING QUI GON

 

Love: The Duel.
Hate: "Yippeeee!"

 

Actually it would have had been far better to have a 14 year old play a ten year old anakin, just like we had a 17-18 year old natalie play a 14 yr old queen.

 

LOVE: "When they find us, they will crush us, grind us into tiny pieces, and then BLAST us into oblivion!"
HATE: "Yippee!"

LOVE: Qui-Gon catching Jar-Jar's tongue.
HATE: Jar-Jar's fart/poop gags.

LOVE: McGregor as Obi-Wan.
HATE: Obi-Wan's lack of screen time.

LOVE: Qui-Gon.
HATE: Qui-Gon's death being revealed in the Soundtrack


...Natalie was 16, by the way, during filming.

LOVE: Menacing robots
Hate: That there weren't any in this film

Love: Darth Maul
Hate: Darth Maul getting less character development than jar jar. WT*?

Love: Aggresive Negotiations
Hate: Diplomatic solutions

Love: The Force's connection to certain individuals
Hate: The science lesson for why the force is connected to certain individuals.

Love: Fun action and witty banter
Hate: Boring political discussions


MOD EDIT - Meh, we could do without the comment about the fans.

 

ENJOYED: The visuals
DIDN'T ENJOY: The film's pacing.

 

Love: seeing Jedi operating under normal day to day circumstances

Hate: Jedi Masters Yareal Poof and Oppo Rancis. THEY CREEP ME OUT. There is "alien," then there is really "alien." Rancis is a furry snake, and Poof has an extra set of arms and a second chest under his robe. I'm just glad they didn't do anything but sit there. If they had spoke, there might not have been enough voltage in the world to electro-shock me back into coherence. They are all I can look at in those scenes with the Jedi council, and have been since I saw it for the first time. Its totally irrational. I need help.

 

Love: The interaction between Qui Gon and Obi Wan.
Hate: The interaction between Anakin and Padme. Ugh...

Love: Gasgano (I don't know why)
Hate: Ben Quadrinaros

Love: Sebulba
Hate: Ric Olie'

Love: Amidala's Costumes
Hate: Bits of Anakin's dialog such as "YIPPEE!!" and "I'll try spinning, that's a good trick!". Double ugh.

I can't think of much else that I hate, so I'll just spread a little more love-

Love: The Underwater Scenes
Love: The Scenery of Naboo in general
Love: Seeing Coruscant for the first time
LOVE LOVE LOVE: Watto (My favorite character in TPM)

HATE: Most of Ambidala's hairstyles.

LOVE: Idea behind the storyline.
HATE: The fact that certain things that would have been told through visuals kept being only referred to in dialogue.

LOVE: The idea behind the midichlorians.
HATE: Alot of the misconception about what purpose it serves that spurred from it.
