In ANH, we hear Han Solo say that the Falcon can go at a speed of .5 over light (so that is 1.5x the speed of light), and is considered the fastest ship in the galaxy.

Well, as we know it, the diameter of a galaxy are several thousands of light years; our own galaxy, the milky way, has a width of 75,000 light years. Now, speaking of this, how can a ship with hyperspace capabilities travel across the galaxy in a matter of hours?

This sure gives us a perspective on how damn big this universe is! ;)

Hyperspace isn't lightspeed. In the Star Wars universe, the moment you hit lightspeed, you jump into the "shadow dimension" that is hyperspace. By ".5 past lightspeed," Han Solo meant the speed the Falcon travels in hyperspace, which is technically past/beyond lightspeed.
