    While I personally love romance stories [face_love] and I hope to see more... we are also doing a Qui-Gon interview challenge over on the Fan fiction board for the next few weeks.

    Layren has come up with a series of questions that Qui-Gon should answer. Keep in mind it could be at any time in his life... even AU!

    Here's the link to The Qui-Gon Survey - The Jedi Council Strikes Back

    This is the third in the series of tales that is brought to you by the Romance Writer's Handbook of Stock Situations.

    This is Stock Situation 3) The chemically/magically induced love affair: The Hero and/or Heroine ingest (or are in some way affected by) some sort of chemical, or are placed under a spell, which causes them to fall in love.

    Title: Love Potion Number 1138
    Author: Knight_Dilettante
    Timeframe: Pre-TPM
    Characters: Master Qui-Gon Jinn, Master Sandiara B'alk
    Genre: romance
    Summary: Qui-Gon Jinn and Sandiara B'alk and their padawans are investigating reports that the Neimodian Trade Federation is building Droidekas with shield generators, clearly against Republic law, when someone attempts to derail their investigation in an extremely unusual way.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    "Qui-Gon, let's send the Padawans to follow that line after lunch. I don't think I can stand another hour searching through financial records." Master Sandiara B'alk said.
    "A good way to re-channel some of the exuberance of the young. A wise suggestion." Qui-Gon answered with a hint of a smile.
    The Padawans, Obi-Wan and Lunira were less enthused by the idea. But they obeyed their masters and after lunch took themselves to the Republic Revenue Service offices on the planet.
    Qui-Gon and Sandiara went to go visit the Neimodian plant where their informant indicated that the illicit shield generators were being produced and installed.
    The Neimodians were clearly uneasy with their presence. But they also seemed oddly confident. The Jedi were made welcome, and given tea which the Neimodian in charge of the plant did not share with them, though he sat with them and watched them drink it. The tea had an odd aftertaste and when Sandiara commented on it, the Neimodian explained that it was considered a delicacy by the natives of the world but that it did not agree with most Neimodians. Qui-Gon and Sandiara exchanged glances but neither felt any warning of danger from the Force so they finished their tea.
    The Neimodians lead them about the plant for much of the afternoon. Eventually Qui-Gon grew impatient. "We are grateful for your time and knowledge Manager Dhoat. However, we would like to explore on our own for a while."
    Dhoat's eyes grew a shade alarmed before he controlled himself. "I'm afraid that is much too dangerous. You might be injured by machinery." After a moment he added, "Besides, it is time for us to close for the remainder of the day anyway. Perhaps tomorrow."
    Sandiara was prepared to argue but Qui-Gon shook his head and the two left.
    "Why did you not argue?" Sandiara asked.
    "It seems to me it would be easier on our hosts if we just went in tonight on our own. As long as we are careful they will never know we were there." Qui-Gon answered.
    Sandiara smiled warmly at him. "I never knew you were so sneaky. I like sneaky."
    "Good."
    The Jedi foursome met for dinner and a planning session. It was decided that the two Masters would enter the plant that night after moonset and conduct the search as they had already toured much of it. The Padawans would keep watch outside, each taking half the perimeter.
    ~~~~~

    They walked over to the plant from the nearest public transit stop. Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow when his Master took Master Sandiara's arm to escort her inside but it was not his job to keep his Master from getting scolded on outmoded curtesies so he said nothing.

    Inside the plant Sandiara pulled her arm away reluctantly, and asked uncertainly, "Should we split up?"

    Qui-Gon felt uncomfortable at the idea. "We'd cover more ground... but no. I don't like it."

    "Alright," she said, touching his arm again, "Where to?"

    "The tour he took us on hit all the rooms that have outside walls. But I noticed particularly that he avoided a section of the inner core. Let's try there." Qui-Gon said, taking her hand in his own.

    They walked down the hall hand in hand.

    When they reached the first door to an inner chamber it was locked. Sandiara pulled a set of picks from her belt a

    Since the survey challenge as stated was rather open to ANY Jedi taking the survey...

    Title: Jedi Temple Survey - Yoda
    Author: JalendaviLady
    Timeframe: about 18 years after TPM (AU)
    Note: Set 18 years after my romance series. Asha is Qui-Gon and Shmi's daughter. The Viceroy comment is about a viggie I am working on.

    What age were you brought to the Temple?

    Born in the Temple, I was. Ranked highest swordmaster my father was and head of the younglings mother was.

    What are your hobbies?

    Hobbies? Head of the Jedi Council and Master of a Padawan am I! No time for hobbies I have. Even though collect smashball trading cards I do. Game better two centuries ago was; rule changes, ruin the game they did.

    Is Mace Windu really your friend?

    Colleague he is. Trusted fellow fighter. But call me ?short stuff? when he was 5 he did!

    What are your thoughts on the rules in general and the Jedi Code specifically?

    Serve their purpose the rules do. Remind us what to be Jedi is.

    Are there any suggestions you have for improvement with the current system?

    No complaints I have now. Changes made 18 years ago were sufficient.

    How do you think the program for the initiates is doing and how would you change it if you could?"

    In a half century ask me should you. Changes still settling are. First-batch of non-creche Jedi training are.

    Are the missions you are sent on compatible with your interests and capabilities? Please explain.

    Missions? Off Coruscant I barely am!

    Do you feel you?re given adequate breaks in between missions?

    Humph. Listen to me you do not, silly machine.

    What is your opinion of the academic training programs for Padawans?

    Stringent enough they are, when the new program of outside mentorship included is. Padawan Asha?s work with the Viceroy an example to all should be; understand politics firsthand she will. More training with non-Jedi our Padawans require, to know what to defend they fight.

    Do you think the Republic works the way it should?

    Corruption rampant is. Streetpeople starve by the back steps of the Temple daily. Best we can do now, it is, to defend what we can and to help when possible. But congratulate themselves on social programs the Senate should not! Too much pain and hunger in this world for that there is.

    How should the Council and Jedi interact with outsiders?

    So much we forget who we are, we should not. So little we forget who we defend, we should not.

    What is your favorite food, drink and dessert?

    Swamp-thing stew, of course! Dessert require I do not. Water I require, although quite tasty Asha?s fizzy drinks and Qui-Gon?s favorite teas can be.

    Do you enjoy cooking or do you prefer to eat at the cafeteria?

    Cooking a calming meditation can be, a joining of food, Jedi, and Force.

    What suggestions do you have for improving food service in said cafeteria?

    Multi-species awareness they require. Eat food such as theirs my Yaddle and I cannot.

    If you could be anything besides a Jedi for one day, what would it be?

    Gremlin in haunted house I could be. On Spirit?s Day, many Padawans late at night out of bed have I scared.

    What age did you choose your first apprentice and who was chosen?

    Fifty I was, for my species young. Great defender of the Republic he became, though love pranks and jokes of door-knocking he did. Also jokes about fowl across airspeeder routes walking.

    There are rumors that some Jedi love despite the Code. What is your opinion of this?

    Where Jocasta dig survey up? You try against love I for Yaddle have to insinuate? Legal under the Jedi Code for nearly twenty years it has been!

    What is your favorite color?

    Being green, it is not easy
    Spend each day the color of the trees, I do
    Nicer another color perhaps would be
    Like maybe gold of sunset sky

    If you were given a week of extra free time what would you do with it?

    Padawan?s mother a lakefront resort owns. Wh

    After reading survey, talking backwards, I shall! [face_devil]

    I always thought Yoda had to have a wicked sense of humour. After all, how can one get to 900 years of age without going totally Zorro? The survey itself was a mix of fun and seriousness, and so, of course, is Yoda. The image that this put in my head, though, was sad:

    Corruption rampant is. Streetpeople starve by the back steps of the Temple daily.

    I'm sure that definitely existed. I wonder how the Jedi approached that problem. Sure, they're all great warriors and stuff, but how do they handle life's nastier problems like hunger, disease and the hate that goes on behind closed doors?

    Oh, no! No more plot bunnies! Go away! *sinks head in shame*

    Loved Yoda's take on "It's Not Easy Being Green"! [face_laugh]

    This one is kind of long. Sorry. And partly inspired by the Yoda response to the survey though I had started it before the survey appeared. This one took so long because I had to keep cutting bits out to keep it from being too long.

    This is the fourth in the series of tales that is brought to you by the Romance Writer's Handbook of Stock Situations.

    This is Stock Situation 4) The "A Thin Line Separates Hate and Love" scenario. The Hero and Heroine are feuding over something. Eventually the arguments morph (by a mysterious process not seen in the wild, in my experience) into true love.

    Title: On a Vibroshiv's Edge
    Author: Knight_Dilettante
    Timeframe: Pre-JA, The months just before Qui-Gon's mission to Bandomeer
    Characters: Master Qui-Gon Jinn, Penela Rikard, Laon, Mace Windu
    Genre: romance
    Summary: Qui-Gon Jinn is the Temple's greatest negotiator. So naturally, when a neighbor proposes to build a building that will cut off the light to the room of a Thousand Fountains among others, and permanently shade many of the Temple's precious gardens, it is to Qui-Gon that the Council turns.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    "Well, I am very sorry, Master Jinn, but I cannot do that. I need to build all three thousand units or I cannot make enough money on this venture." Penela Rikard was starting to get annoyed. Why the Jedi had to bother her at all on this matter was beyond her. And to send an irritating man like Jinn with his smirks and insufferable silent stare...
    "Is money really all that you care for?" Jinn asked.
    "What I care for is none of your business, Master Jinn." Penela pushed the button under her desk that buzzed Laon's desk with the tone that meant, 'invent a call for me and get rid of this guy'. She regretted resorting to subterfuge but really, this man was the most stubborn one she had ever met.
    "You needn't invent a meeting Ma'am." Jinn said.
    Just as she was about to deny doing any such thing, her desk buzzer chimed and Laon's voice echoed between them, "I'm sorry to disturb you, Director Rikard, but your next appointment is here."
    With a grimace, Penela replied, "Not now, Laon."
    Laon, not knowing the conversation inside her office had made his statement laughable, repeated, "Director Rikard, your meeting!"
    Penela cut the connection without replying.
    "I will be happy to resume talks another day." Jinn said as he rose to his admittedly impressive height.
    "I see no point in that." Penela said aghast at the idea of having to continue this charade of polite negotiation when it seemed that all the man would accept was such a reduced number of units as to make her plans impossible.
    "Well, if you are certain you would rather have this go through the courts... I am certain I can get a restraining order that will prevent you from building until such time as we do come to an agreement. The courts are well aware of the good the Jedi do."
    "The Jedi are not the only people in the galaxy who do good, Master Jinn. Indeed, I have yet to see the Jedi working for the citizens of Coruscant itself." Penela said, her temper flaring. "What is it about these gardens that makes them so precious and immovable anyway? Why not just grow your endangered plants on some planet where there is open land. Such planets are not that rare. Why not move your entire Temple to one if growing things are so important to a Jedi. A few gardens cannot possibly be enough to really help you." Penela paused for a moment. "I would be happy to offer you a fair price for the property."
    "I'm afraid that would not do. We are too often needed to consult with the Senate for us to move our Temple. And we are so often sent to very desolate worlds. The gardens help us to rejuvenate our spirits." Master Jinn smiled at her and she knew it meant he would not be giving up yet. "I will let you get to your 'meeting' now," he said. He left the room without a backward glance.
    Penela sat down at her desk and slammed her fist into it. She would have to go on the offensive before the Jedi found a pet judge
    Notes: This is complete silliness and the joke may not translate well for Jedi, but this kind of online questionnaire shows up where I work every so often, disappears for awhile and then the results resurface in a view-graph from the captain about how morale really isn?t that low. Seeing that the seat of galactic civilization is about to collapse in on the Jedi of Qui-Gon Jinn?s era, this seemed like the sort of thing that might be going around the Temple.
    Summary: Qui-Gon reflects on what he has learned.
    Timeframe: This one jumps all over the place.
    Notes: This is my first try at writing Dooku and my second try writing Xanatos :D I hope y?all enjoy!
    ?Come on Master, I?ll race you back to our room!? Thirteen-year-old Padawan Qui-Gon Jinn grinned at his Master, Yan Dooku who groaned.
    ?Padawan, not now,? he huffed in irritation. They had just returned from a very lengthy mission in which Dooku?s patience had been tested time and time again. Qui-Gon however, appeared to have limitless amounts of energy and could barely stand still, let alone listen to endless negotiations. /Oh to be that young again,/ he thought with a fond smile.
    Qui-Gon smirked. ?Afraid of losing old man??
    ?Not on your life, young one. Alright, loser has to cook dinner for a month,? Dooku arched a brow at his apprentice.
    Without waiting for confirmation, Qui-Gon took off, leaving Dooku standing in the dust of his Padawan?s departure. Realizing that he would be cooking dinner for a month if he didn?t get a move on, he started to attempt to catch up with his apprentice.
    Upon arriving at the door he found Qui-Gon already there. ?You cheated.?
    Qui-Gon looked mortally offended. ?I did not. You?re just too slow.?
    Dooku laughed and clapped his padawan on the shoulder. ?You just remember this young one. Someday you?re going to be exactly like I am.?
    Qui-Gon wrinkled his nose. ?Gray haired and grumpy??
    ?Wretch,? Dooku aimed a playful swipe at his apprentice?s shoulder. ?Come on, let?s go have dinner.?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ?Come on Master, I?ll race you!? Padawan Xanatos DeCrion smirked at his teacher as they arrived back at the Temple after their fourth back to back mission.

    ?No, padawan. You run along and I?ll be there shortly,? Qui-Gon said as he hefted his bag over his shoulder.

    Xanatos pouted. ?You never want to do anything that I want to do.?

    ?Now you know that?s not true. Who picked the last holovid??

    Very reluctantly Xanatos answered. ?I did.?

    ?Well then,? Qui-Gon said as if that settled the matter.

    ?Please?? Xanatos put on his best begging look. He knew that if he asked hard enough his Master would give him anything he wanted within reason.

    Qui-Gon rolled his eyes and then smiled. ?If it means that much to you. You?re cooking dinner if you lose.?

    Xanatos wrinkled his nose. He hated cooking, but then he knew for certain that he would win. ?Deal,? he said, his eyes sparkling. With the speed of a blaster bolt, he shot down the corridor.

    Qui-Gon was still standing in the corridor several minutes later trying to work out how his apprentice had learned that technique. He knew that he hadn?t taught it to him yet. Shrugging, the Master jogged swiftly to their corridors to find Xanatos waiting for him.

    ?I win!? the eighteen-year-old announced with a triumphant grin. ?You?re getting slow, old man.?

    Qui-Gon rolled his eyes at his apprentice. ?No you just cheated. Someday you?ll be old and wise like I am.?

    ?I didn?t cheat, you?re just getting old! I used the Force. I would think you?d be happy that I?ve been practicing in my spare time,? Xanatos said flipping his padawan braid over his shoulder where it belonged. ?I?m going to be young forever just to spite you,? he teased.

    Qui-Gon smirked tossed his bags in a corner of the living room. To his surprise he saw the comm unit on the wall blinking. He had a message from Councilor Windu. He reviewed the message and then sighed deeply. They had yet another mission.

    ?Padawan I?m afraid you better get whatever rest you can tonight. We?re leaving in the morning.?

    ?So soon?? Xanatos frowned at that. ?We just got here!?

    ?Yes. We?re headed to Telos.?

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Fifteen years had passed since that fateful mission, Qui-Gon reflected as he knelt in meditation. Today was the anniversary of his former Padawan?s
    Title: A Part of Growing Up
    Author: Master_Noi
    Characters: Qui-Gon, Dooku
    Summary: An alien governor finds some amusement in a young padawan.
    Timeframe: Young Padawan Qui-Gon
    ?I must say, Master Dooku. This young man is amazing. Never have I heard such things,? came a deep, booming voice.
    Qui-Gon glowered at the large, violet-skinned alien. He knew his face was flushed because of the heat he was sure even they could feel radiating from his skin. The past hours at the dinner table had been worse than any torture, any punishment and he looked to Master with desperation.
    //Master, Help!//
    Dooku felt nothing but sympathy for his young apprentice, but the reality of the situation was they couldn?t leave just yet.
    //Hang on a few more minutes, Padawan.//
    ?Padawan Jinn, tell me more about some of your interests.?
    Qui-Gon winced and quickly said, ?I like lightsaber sparring.?
    ?And??
    //Master ?//
    ?Qui-Gon is quite accomplished with a saber for his age, governor,? Dooku began, trying to take the pressure off his apprentice. ?He has won many competitions. I am very ??
    ?Let the boy speak, Master Dooku.?
    The governor leaned forward, staring at Qui-Gon with black, glossy eyes.
    ?Tell me about these competitions,? he said with a bright smile on his face.
    Qui-Gon groaned, wishing there were a hole to crawl into. If he were lucky, the Force would call him home and just put him out of his misery. Instead, it only got worse, as a more slender, obviously female alien swept into the room.
    ?Yes, come my dear,? the governor said, motioning to the seat next to him. ?I am sorry to bother you and bring you across town, but our guest must leave soon and you had to hear this.? He turned back to Qui-Gon. ?Speak for my wife. Your voice is so beautiful. Just introduce yourself ? you don?t have to say much.?
    Qui-Gon took a deep breath and turned to the second set of glossy orbs.
    ?Hello, I am Padawan Qui-Gon Jinn.? His normal accented tone shot up an octave and he winced, stopping momentarily. ?This is my master,? he paused in frustration at a second change in pitch. ?I have been apprenticed to him?? Another peak, and he cringed again. ? ? for two years.?
    Qui-Gon looked to Dooku in sheer desperation. His throat was dry and scratchy for talking almost non-stop for the last two hours.
    ?Governor, we must really be going.?
    The governor put one of his three long fingers up to silence the Jedi master and motioned to his wife. She sat next to her husband with tears welling up underneath her eyes. She finally spoke.
    ?That was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard in my entire existence,? she said placing one hand on her chest.
    ?I told you Master Dooku; the boy has talent. It is a pity it is temporary. With such large feet, he is going to need help when it comes time to find a mate.?
    Qui-Gon choked on a sip of water he had just taken to soothe his dry throat.
    ?We really must be going, Governor,? Dooku said, slapping Qui-Gon on his back as he rushed him out of the room.
    As they exited the governor?s residence and made their way towards the town?s main hangar, Dooku slowed so that his apprentice could catch up with him.
    ?I am very sorry you had to go through that Qui-Gon. I had no idea the Kalians would find your voice so amusing.?
    ?Don?t remind,? he paused as his voice soared once again. ?remind me.?
    ?I too went through this stage. Master Yoda and I were quite a pair between his challenged grammar and my cracking voice.?
    The remark got a little chuckle from the apprentice.
    ?It will pass in time Padawan. You?re getting older and it?s just a part of growing up.?
    Timeframe: JA
    Characters: Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Helgheda (OC)
    Genre: humor
    Keywords: Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, dancing, hair, old
    Summary: Obi-Wan should learn to not volunteer Qui-Gon for things. Dancing, hair loose and a gorgeous Jedi Master. What else do you want?
    Note: All that talk about a certain Jedi master, exotic dances, loose hair [in the Maverick thread, over at Fanfiction Resource] and old age [at least that belongs to this thread], drove me crazy - and has resulted in this...this....well. Whatever you choose to call it.
    Title: Time of Choosing
    Author: VaderLVR64
    Timeframe: JA
    Characters: Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi
    Summary: Qui-Gon begins to feel the passing of years as his Padawan faces a time of decision.
    Notes: This is based on an Amish custom in which the young people are given permission to experience the life they have never known and after which must make a decision to return to the Amish or abandon their ways, and thus lose the fellowship of their Amish brothers and sisters. It is a little different and of course, very much an AU.
    Title: New Heights
    Author: ardavenport (aka Anne Davenport)
    Characters: Qui-Gon Jinn and Master Dooku
    Genre: drama
