Layren This was so sweet. Poor Qui-Gon running throughtout his whole life! And loving it. At least he could still keep up with Obi-Wan after all those years. I liked that you showed him at different ages! Great job.

Noi This was adorable. I could just picture poor Qui-Gon having to talk and getting more and more embarrassed by it. Wonderful!

I figured all the stories would be about creaking knees...LOL. Glad to see young Qui thinking about getting older, too.

I'm so envious of seeing getting old challenges already posted...

Layren, I loved seeing a growing and maturing Qui-Gon. My favorite part was at the end when he decided to look toward the future and not the past... excellent.

Noi, I had felt so bad for Qui-Gon, thinking that the governor and his wife were making fun of his changing voice, but they weren'. They seem to truly find it beautiful, perhaps even more so to young Qui-Gon's horror. I loved it!

    ditto what she ^ said.

Layren I thought that was lovely. It's not just boys that want to race, though. My daughter has started "try to catch me" and running off. Actually, [face_thinking] there is an alarming subtle difference there... decides this is one of those ostrich moments and resolutely ignores the implications

Master_Noi Brilliant! I loved that you chose to work with young Qui-Gon. I know it must have pained Qui-Gon greatly but it seemed likely to me that his listeners were genuine in their appreciation. Which actually, might make it worse in a way...

I thought I wasn't going to be able to do this one because I couldn't come up with anything that sounded at all interesting. Possibly because I am still in denial about becoming a grownup. But then, just a moment ago, I glimpsed a fluffy bunny tail. If I can catch up to it I might have a response after all...

Blame Healer Leona and Diane-charter members of a certain...er...club, for this particular production. All that talk about a certain Jedi master, exotic dances, loose hair [in the Maverick thread, over at Fanfiction Resource] and old age [at least that belongs to this thread], drove me crazy - and has resulted in this...this....well. Whatever you choose to call it. :D

I may as well tell you that this is part of the 'Getting Older' challenge. Sigh. Yes. Getting Old.

Dedicated to all Qui-fans. Hope ya like it.

    On with the madness...!

    Maverick Missions

    Beautiful.

Admittedly, it took some time getting used to?but once one ignored the rather peculiar thrumming noise produced by insects peculiar to the Thra?alian landscape, the muted murmurs of crowds of citizens exchanging opinions on everything under the Thra?a suns?one could enjoy it. Very well, indeed.

Obi-Wan Kenobi watched the slender Thra?alian dancer swing herself in the gentle light of evening?he knew she was a female, from the long strings of beads she wore twisted round her hair, for male dancers did not ornament their hair at all?once, twice, thrice?and finally land gracefully on her feet, having turned a somersault into the bargain. She smiled, swept a grateful bow to her widely admiring spectators, and walked away, hips swinging, inviting cheers and calls from the male section of the audience.

It would have been even more pleasant?if a certain obnoxious Thra?alian Young Chief had not been present to mar his enjoyment of the performance. Helgheda, successor to the Chief of the clan of Warshida?and acting escort to the Jedi, who would be leaving for Coruscant after two weeks of negotiating trade-treaties between two or three war-torn Thra?a clans?could not seem to leave the Jedi well alone. That young man had insisted on accompanying them in all their meanderings throughout the day?the only day they had had to themselves, Obi-wan thought with a hint of irritation?and though helpful, had managed to grate on their nerves considerably, with his remarks on the Jedi way of life. Eventually, Qui-Gon had retired to their spare, but comfortable quarters located in the middle of the clan dwellings, leaving Obi-Wan to enjoy the seasonal Thra?alian festivities that were being carried on, as a result of successful negotiations. The master had also left him to the tender mercies of the Young Chief?and this, Obi-Wan appreciated not at all.

//Don?t abandon me, please. Not with him.// had been his impassioned plea for mercy?to which Qui-Gon had answered with a characteristic quirk of his eye-brows.

//Consider it a test of your diplomatic skills, padawan mine. // The master had then walked off, choosing to ignore a certain incomprehensible grunt made by his padawan?and the apprentice had been left to fend for himself as much as possible.

He had not been very successful, judging by the way Helgheda, well-built in a manner typical of all Thra?alians, towered over the slender padawan, his brown eyes twinkling.

?So, my little master of the physical plane of existence,? whispered that young man, placing a muscled hand on Obi-Wan?s shoulder?for some reason, he persisted in addressing the seventeen year old this way??dance our way, think you??

Irritated his nerves may be, and he may not care for such condescension?but Obi-Wan was too much a Jedi to let his feelings bleed into conversation. ?I don?t understand,? he replied, directing his eyes towards another dancer?a male, this time?who had walked to the middle of the circle formed by the spectators.

Helgheda raised his eye-brows, in a very fair imitation of Master Jinn. ?Surely my little master does not fail to understand such a simple statement?? His cloying voice?assumed to irritate him, Obi-Wan knew?made the apprentice feel slightly nauseous. ?The Thra?alian dance?it is breath-taking, is it not??

?Very,? came the dry answer. The drums had started beating out their steady, addictive rhythm. Obi-wa

OH, MY!!! Wow, that was wonderful. May you always be so inspired....

I loved when he let his hair down - I could just so picture that. And then him dancing - flying more like - very exotic. Loved it... [face_love]

Oi vey! *fans self* That was... that was so exquisite!! =P~ As murmurs of surprise ran through the expectant crowd, the master reached a hand towards his long hair, neatly gathered into a thick, wavy nerf-tail?and released the tie that bound the strands in one, easy sweep. At once, rich chestnut tresses fell to his shoulders, caressing his face, transforming him in an instant, from a severe, immovable Jedi master?into an exotic warrior of yore. Gone was the stern expression, and unyielding eyes?the latter held a decided gleam, and his whole posture spoke of one who was aware of what he needed to do?and how to go about it.

Excellent!!! =D= I soooo loved how Obi walked into that one! [face_mischief] I do believe that this Helgheda set him up from the start! [face_laugh] Poor Obi!

Great job! You made him dance extremely well...I think I'm going to faint... ;)

I just have to add another thank you for writing that lovely little inspirational piece. The only way I got through all the reps I did at the gym today was to close my eyes and imagine watching Qui-Gon dance. Of course, since I was at a gym where (unfortunately) I cannot control the music, Qui was dancing to "play that funky music white boy" which is so wrong it's in the next galaxy but you take what you can get.

Oh my!!! ROTFL [face_laugh] I can juz imagine him attempting that juz to get back at Obi-Wan!! [face_mischief] Oh my goodness I bet Obi's ginger brows would be all the way up and his eyes as large as plates!!!

That was hilarious KD! What a image!

//Consider it a test of your diplomatic skills, padawan mine. //.. Obi-Wan should have known that was coming. LOL! ?My master can rival your dancers?if it comes to that.? -- Yay, you tell him !! [face_laugh] I love how defensive Obi-Wan became of his master and how Qui-Gon's thoughts kept denying being old.

Is that anyone I recognize in that audience??? Hmmm????

Arulmozhi, may I second, third and fourth those who say may you be so inspired often. So much in there was the stuff of dreams.. infact, maybe I'll finally get my Qui dreams with thoughts of this in my head. Bravo to you and the wonderful bunny!

P_A - Well that was something else. I loved Obi-Wan defending Qui, but he really should have known he was being coerced.

Hmmm. seems Qui felt her had a little something to prove there also ... which he did. [face_laugh]

    Thank you, all. :D

dianethx Thought you might like the hair-falling part. Why d'you think I wrote that in such great..er..detail :D ?

Kynstar: <gives a hand to a staggering Kyn, sets her down, and begins to flap a fan vigorously> My poor Kyn. That hot, was it? [face_laugh] I doubt Helgheda knew what he was letting himself in for, when he made the challenge :)

Knight_Dilettante: Master Qui-Gon looks at the roses at his feet, bends and picks them all up. He then bows to fellow Knight D, tucks them all in his belt, giving her a rare but glittering smile.

    "Dance with me?" he asks.
Upon which K-D promptly swoons. Into a comforting pair of arms, I hope.

Am glad you made it thru gym with the image of Qui dancing (I 'm probably very dense, but what does g, d, rfc mean?!)to music not of his galaxy. Ah, but he's a clever one :D

    Layren: Thank you :D

LuvEwan: Thanks so much. Coming from you, that's a great compliment :)

Healer_Leona: Glad you liked it. I shall try to produce more - er...*will* produce more. Need I say that the you were part of that audience - in another incarnation, I think :D . And Obi can get very defensive...if he lets himself :)

Master_Noi: I think he did realise that he was being...coerced, but decided to go along with it, anyway :) - perhaps he knew that Qui would like to prove a point - or two :D

    Title: Time of Choosing
    Author: VaderLVR64
    Timeframe: JA
    Characters: Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi
Summary: Qui-Gon begins to feel the passing of years as his Padawan faces a time of decision.
Notes: This is based on an Amish custom in which the young people are given permission to experience the life they have never known and after which must make a decision to return to the Amish or abandon their ways, and thus lose the fellowship of their Amish brothers and sisters. It is a little different and of course, very much an AU.

    Time of Choosing

The group of young ones passed by him; their laughter and excited voices made him smile. The Padawans were in very high spirits, the time of Shuurviite having come upon them.

They left the Temple in a mass, but he knew from experience that they would soon break into smaller groups and then individuals would start drifting off to explore Coruscant on his or her own. Most of them did not care to share the experiences they would have with others that they would face again as Jedi. The days Shuurviite were a private time, when one could be foolish and reckless without fear of correction or punishment.

Obi-Wan ambled past him and winked. Then he gave his Master a look that clearly said, ?Don?t worry; I?ll be fine.?

It seemed odd to see Obi-Wan in the nerf leather pants and blue shirt. He was too accustomed to seeing him in the sand colored tunics of a Jedi. Flung over the young man?s shoulder was a small bag containing two changes of clothing, sleep pants, toiletries, a map-vid card for his data pad, a comm unit, and a generous amount of credits. Qui-Gon knew exactly what was in the bag because he had given Obi-Wan advice on what to pack.

The tall Master nodded, but after his Padawan passed a look of worry descended on his noble features. The Padawans would be on their own for the next twenty days, free to indulge any whim they might have as long as it did not violate any Galactic or Coruscant laws. And as Qui-Gon himself knew, this left a wide variety of activities that could still get them into a lot of trouble.

Shuurviite, translated roughly from Old Basic, meant ?Time of Choosing.? That was as good an explanation as Qui-Gon could come up with, though he thought that perhaps it should have been known more correctly as the ?Time of Discovery and Choosing.? Still, the tradition was older than Master Yoda and unlikely to be renamed because of one slightly rebellious Jedi Master.

Qui-Gon watched as the last few young ones filed out the doors. The sounds of their whooping and excited chatter were abruptly cut off when the Temple doors closed. He was left feeling strangely bereft when the Temple settled back into its customary silence.

    He felt alone and?old.

Yes, that was it exactly; he felt old.

The Padawans who were now spreading out among the streets of Coruscant were filled with the hope and utter certainty of youth. Their animated babbling had filled the halls for weeks now as they made their plans. Each would sample life beyond the Jedi Temple, beyond the Order, which had been the only thing they had known all of their lives.

For each, it would be a time to choose to remain among the Jedi. They would explore the alternatives, a ?civilian? life, and then look deep within themselves to determine if being a Jedi was right for them.

It was a rare that a Padawan left the Order after the Shuurviite rites; in fact it had not happened during his own lifetime. But as he considered now how many years he had watched the young ones march out of the Temple and into ?real? life, he felt the passage of years since his own Shuurviite.

And the number of years between that day and this one made him feel old.

He stood there, looking out into the world that surrounded the Temple. He closed his eyes and let the sun streaming in through the windows warm his face. There were no Padawans in sight any longer, but he could hear the happy echo of their laughter.

In a flood, the memories of his own Shuurviite washed over him. He could e

Princess_A, lovely except there is no way I would give up the opportunity to dance with Qui-Gon by fainting. My will is much stronger than that! Don't mind us, we'll be back as soon as he's finished teaching me to Mambo. :D

VaderLVR, what a lovely introspective look with Qui-Gon... how he contemplates his own Time Of Choosing so long ago. That last line too... made me ache thinking being Jedi one could not even enjoy the simple pleasure of the sunshine... *sigh*

Great job, VaderLVR64 I loved how you captured his longing without making it too maudlin and that, for him, the time of choosing was a real time, not just a vacation or something to be treated lightly.

    Lovely.
