Thought to drop by and see what was going on. *looks around.* Seeing as I've never actually been to the Non-SW Rpg forum before...Looks pretty nice! And I think I might just stay a while!

As an antidote to all the shameless TORRyukening going on on SWRPF, I'd like to mention a lovely little chestnut that those of you old enough to remember when the Intel 386 was considered top-of-the-line technology and the Pentium still didn't know how to add to 4 will probably remember.

Remember Star Control 2?

Well, a bunch of guys who like good, old games like me have worked on remixing it and keeping it viable for today, and as such I proudly plug The Ur-Quan Masters, basically Star Control 2 with the 3D0 (and AWESOME) music and jigged so it'll still work on modern PCs.

I played through it. If you can look past dated graphics and just immerse yourself in the story, it's still a wonderful experience. Its 1.2 Meg of size just shames the multi-gigabyte "games" we've come to deal with these days. I've heard briefly that Mass Effect was meant to be its spiritual successor, but there ain't no comparison to the original. Enjoy, folks.

 

According to Wikipedia it's a combination adventure game/shmup? I'll have to check that out.

On a completely unrelated note: **** work and relatives' health scares, and yes, I know, I need to update.

 

I think I played Ultima back then Ultima, man that is another era of human history these days.

 

Which Ultima are we talking - the one with TIE fighters or the awesome fourth installment? Cause man, Ultima IV was like diving into the heart of computer RPG history and watching as the proverbial fish mutant took its first steps on the treacherous landmass. Or some equally pretentious analogy.

 

About the only Ultima I played was Ultima Underworld, to be honest. I think that was around the time the first Elder Scrolls game came out (el-der-leeeeee....!)

My formative experience was Pool of Radiance.

 

That is hard to say, as I really idd not play htem in the right order and I think five . . . five was the one I did not play. But I think four was the last one to go flawlessly on a 386, so that was it back then. Ultima V already prefered a 486 and then came VI and finally the crazy two-part VII (which was compared to the mutated fish the first moment of a bird flying in evolution) which demanded a crzay 486 II! Hell, if my life depended on it, I could not remember what the II was for!

Pool of Radiance came a a lot later for me. And Arena? Ah, I missed that one. Daggerfall was my entry point into elder Scrolls and I still jump from joy when I see it referenced in Skyrim today! That Wromking! I had to wait a long time to get rid of him!

 

It stood for II many errors.

So I was trundling around the web looking for images of Batman, and I came across (I suppose it was late) the Green Lantern/Batman fight from All Star Batman and Robin. You know, the one with the yellow room and lemonade.

Here's my confession: as long as you asume ASBAR is part of the same universe as Dark Knight Returns, it sort of fits. I didn't mind it that much... *awaits the tomatoes*

 

ASBAR is a perfect fit for the TDKR universe - accidentally over the top and quite silly in retrospect.

I still contend that Frank Miller's best work was on Daredevil. Always have, always will.

 

What is it about Daredevil? I haven't read much of it, but people seem to go wild for him. What remedial knowledge am I missing here?

 

To wit - he's the single most consistently well-written character Marvel has.

Most books have one or two definitive runs - Daredevil has something like six: Stan Lee/Bill Everett, Frank Miller, Ann Nocenti, Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Mark Waid. This is a character where you can actually point to one author in the last thirty years and say "Yeah, this was the only bad part" (Namely, Kevin Smith's abominable eight issue stint). That's just unheard of, and as a result he's a huge fan favorite.

 

This place has had far too few wubs recently.
