ST The role the new EU can play post-TFA

When ANH came out in 1977 we only knew what we were shown in the movie. We knew Luke was a farmhand. We knew Han was a smuggler. We knew Old Ben was an old Wizard. We knew Leia was a feisty Princess. We knew Vader was evil.

Everything else was largely fleshed out in the subsequent movies and additional materials within the EU. To those disappointed by the lack of character info on many of these new characters, their back stories, their motivations, hasn't this always been the way? Doesn't the new EU have a role to play in fleshing some of this out in addition to the subsequent films?

Wouldn't it be a lot to expect borderline mini-series level character development of all these new characters in only a single movie?

 

Obviously things like Rey's lineage or Snoke's history will be saved for the future films, but will things like how did we get from the Empire to the First Order be answered by EU? Or maybe the history of Anakin's/Luke's lightsaber?

Right now the visual dictionary and the cross-sections book are at least hinting to a more expanded view of things that had little or no cover in the film. Supposedly the New Republic Senate is described a little more.

What do you really think they will allow to be covered? What do you HOPE they will cover?


For example I feel the Clone Wars animated series really highlighted the Clone Wars and Anakin's life. It basically filled in the end of AOTC and the beginning of ROTS. In return it actually made ATOC and ROTS better because they had more context.

It's apparent that a lot of complaints in the complaints thread are about lack of information and background. Somethings like we said, Reys background, what happened to Luke and the origin of Snoke will be off limits, but there is plenty that can be told.
