Beyond - Legends The Scarlet Illyini (Post NJO AU, Authors NOte 11\12\05)

Gonna post the first half of five since it's what I have from my beta...hoping to get it on the next page though.

 

Chapter Five
Altair Manor, Theed, Naboo

Julie Drian removed the thermometer from Mailelei's ear, satisfied that her fever had dropped another couple points. It hadn't taken long to diagnose blood poisoning, and find the culprit - a laceration on her leg. Julie immediately started her on IV antibiotics and drained the infected cut. Amaia assisted her in getting Mailelie into an infirmary shift and then under cooling blankets, also cleaning up when she suddenly threw up. She was quiet while they worked, which suited Julie fine. It was more important to get Mailelie's condition stabilized. Now, after over two hours of working, her temperature had finally decreased enough to no longer be dangerous, and Mailelie was breathing much easier. Julie crossed to the bedside to check the cut on her leg, while Amaia mopped Mailelie's brow with a cool cloth. "Did you know Princess Nadia very well, Amaia?"

Amaia looked over at her, surprised. "No, I rarely came to court." She smiled slightly. "And her Highness had so many suitors, it was difficult to speak with her even when I came."

"I can imagine," Julie said, returning her smile. "Good thing she's married now."

"To whom?" Amaia asked, shocked.

"Jacen Solo," Julie said, then winked at her. "Only took them five years."

"That's all?" Amaia mused, shaking her head. "How do you know her?"

"We trained to be Jedi together," Julie answered, brushing her hair out of her face. "Shared a dorm room."

Amaia was surprised. "I didn't know that about her Highness." She shook her head. "I was aware that a Jedi was coming to escort her off world a few years ago, but I never imagined she would not only end up not only marrying him, but training to be one as well?"

Julie smiled. "I can imagine that it it quite surprising."

Amaia nodded. "It is.? She was silent for a moment, considering. "Not everyone objected to Lyanna's rule at first. It is hard to keep the people's faith when there is no food to feed them. But they were really good people, and I believe they would have been able to turn things around soon." She took a deep breath. "I've been working for years to make it safe for Princess Nadia to return." She looked down at Mailelei. "I would give anything to see her, to know for myself that it all hasn't been for nothing."

Julie finished checking Mailelie's leg, then looked up into Amaia's eyes. She was suddenly reminded of what Solana had said about Amaia being a possible choice for Lainey's decoy. They had a similar sad quality to their eyes, reflecting slightly in their bearing.

Since their return to Naboo, after Lainey?s knighting, she and Lainey had been having people ask them to train their Force-sensitive children, and they both had always referred them to Master Skywalker. Recently, they had both considered asking Luke if it would be okay, once Lainey?s baby was born, to start pre-training children on Naboo. "Lainey and I plan to go to Coruscant in a few weeks. Maybe you could come."

"I could be recognized." Amaia shook her head. "But thank you for the offer."

"I can think of a few ways to disguise you," Julie said, smiling cryptically. "Ways in which you could remain in the shadows."

Amaia looked at her, blue eyes bright. "Possibly." She opened her mouth to speak, but hesitated a moment, focusing her gaze on Mailelie. "Did you....use the Force on her?"

"A little bit," Julie answered, patting her patient's hand. "I've put her into a healing sleep. She will wake from it in the morning."

"Oh." Amaia tilted her head to the side, pursing her lips. "Doesn't look much different from normal sleep."

Julie nodded. "There isn't much difference, except that it is much deeper and more refreshing."

Amaia still studied her, when the door to the room slid open, admitting Prince Richard Naberrie.

"Amaia, we're broadcasting in five minutes," Richard began as he entered the room, freezing when he noticed Julie. "Julya?"

"Yes," Julie answered. "Lainey and I ar

Hopefully they're better at video editing than I am!

 

Hehe. I don't think looking for the hand of the force is rediculous at all! I mean heck, I'm looking for it now! It would be so cool to really have the Force!

hehe. BTW- I thought it was pretty cool when you had Qui-Gon and his wife in the hospital naming their little boy, Bortonspew. That's such an interesting name. Even though the scene didn't seem to fit in anywhere... well I'm sure you'll explain it later, so it was a really cool scene.

Can't wait to see what this holorecording is.. And I'm really liking this Mailelie girl. Hehe. But even if she agrees to be Lainey's decoy, I still don't see Lainey doing well with having a decoy.

Very good! Not as entertaining as some of your other posts, but I suppose the plot has to be advanced in serious ways sometimes.

Hmmm... would the disguise for Amaia be anything along the lines of a handmaiden for Lainey?

I can't wait to see the holorecording!

Lainey and Solana had grown bored enough to turn on the holoprojector, watching an idiotic design show on redecorating master refreshers. Solana leaned forward with interest, pointing out things she'd like to see put in Lainey and Armand's. Lainey tried to look interested, though a nice long nap was suddenly appealing to her. She couldn't understand what was so wrong with the refreshers in the first place. Why fix something that wasn't broken? Lainey folded her arms, leaning back against the couch with a sigh. This was why she rarely watched the holonet any more. Who had time to watch people wasting time?

She closed her eyes, wondering what was going on downstairs. Devon had sent up servants to keep her informed, and from what she had last learned, the girl was suffering from blood poisoning and they were treating her for it. Lainey found it strange that Devon's household medic was not present, and that Devon hadn't specified who the girl was in the first place. It made her wonder what was really going on, or, if perhaps she was just being overly suspicious. Pregnancy had made her quite a bit more imaginative than usual, resulting in odd dreams and absent-mindedness. She'd dreamed last night that her baby had been born a mynock, and she'd had to chase him flying just barely above her head all around Theed. Armand hadn't been much help at all. He?d simply informed her that their son had inherited his special gifts from her, and that she'd have to deal with it. Lainey had woken up mad at him, but he'd attributed it to her normal early morning moodiness.

An ice-cold hand touched her cheek, and she started, her eyes flashing open. Armand stood over her, his cheeks flushed red from the cold, with poorly brushed off snow clinging to his hair and coat. "Good morning, Lainey."

"Armand?" Lainey asked, taking both his hands in hers. "You're freezing cold! What are you doing here?"

"Well, the snow has lessened considerably," Armand answered, somewhat sheepishly. "And rumor has it my wife's around here somewhere."

Lainey took his hands, alternately blowing on them and lecturing Armand. "You should have waited the storm out. What if you had crashed or gotten stuck somewhere? It's hardly two degrees outside!" She moved on to his cheeks, reaching up on her tiptoes to reach them, gently stroking. "There's been fifteen crashes already, you know, and five deaths...."

Armand raised an eyebrow, cocking his head toward Pavol Drian. "Notice how she scolds, but she can't keep her hands off me?"

"Notice how my husband lacks common sense?" Lainey asked Solana, running her fingers through his thick wet hair. "He won't even wear a snowcap!"

Solana exchanged glances with Pavol, before rising to her feet. "How about I go make some hot chocolate for them, milady?"

Lainey nodded. "Thank you, Solana."

Jet stepped forward, somewhat awkwardly. "I will assist you, if it pleases milord?"

"Go ahead," Armand said, gesturing for him to go.

Lainey had to smile, casting Armand a sly glance. She'd noticed a chemistry between Solana and Jet not long after she and Armand had married, but it was something the two had been fighting for the past three years. There was an unspoken rule that handmaidens did not get involved with the guard, due in part to the dangerous lives they led. Also, it could interfere with their duties to their liege lord and lady. It was not a rule Lainey and Armand chose to enforce, and though they had tried to make it as obvious as subtly allowed, Solana and Jet had not caught on. Though, recently, Jet had seemed to be making up excuses to be alone with Solana, or, Lainey thought ruefully, to get away from she and Armand when they argued.

Taking advantage of Lainey's slight distraction, Armand had buried his face in her neck, kissing her subtly it took her a moment to realize it when he found a particularly sensitive spot. Lainey ga

I get called Kathleen too I always hated being called Kathryn..., since that isn't even short for Kathleen!
