This is a consolidated subject matter thread wherein we discuss prevalent social movements and the condition of humanity as a whole. All posts most reference a sociologist, philosopher, political scientist, anthropologist or other great thinker who observed the state of civilization and mankind in his or her day.

We will also discuss important social theories and concepts such as social Darwinism, socialism, social media, and sociopaths. Ideally you will belong to one of these before participating in this most erudite of discussions.

Moderator note: the usual Senate rule of citing to a scholarly source in a Mod Squad-approved format (MLA or APA) will be waived provided that you end your post with a quotation from one of the above great thinkers.

    This is most excellent.

That's because other forums have gotten too lax in their moderation. A shame, to be sure.

"I should agree with Plato that arithmetic, and pure mathematics generally, is not derived from perception. Pure mathematics consists of tautologies, analogous to 'men are men,' but usually more complicated. To know that a mathematical proposition is correct, we do not have to study the world, but only the meanings of symbols; and the symbols, when we dispense with definitions (of which the purpose is merely abbreviation), are found to be such words as 'or' and 'not,' and 'all' and 'some,' which do not, like 'Socrates,' denote anything in the actual world. A mathematical equation asserts that two groups of symbols have the same meaning; and so long as we confine ourselves to pure mathematics, this meaning must he one that can be understood without knowing anything about what can be perceived. Mathematical truth, therefore, is, as Plato contends, independent of perception; but it is truth of a very peculiar sort, and is concerned only with symbols." - Bertrand Russell

This whole re-splitting thing has given me more lols per minute than the whole of the JCC this year.

"Guilt? It's this mechanism we use to control people. It's an illusion. It's a kind of social control mechanism -- and it's very unhealthy. It does terrible things to our bodies. And there are much better ways to control our behavior than that rather extraordinary use of guilt."

I thought it was just Diddy because he felt that the P was getting between him and his fans -- which, really, summarizes the entirety of the human condition.

"The Boy Bands Have Won, and All the Copyists and the Tribute Bands and the TV Talent Show Producers Have Won, If We Allow Our Culture to Be Shaped by Mimicry, Whether From Lack of Ideas or From Exaggerated Respect. You Should Never Try to Freeze Culture. What You Can Do Is Recycle That Culture. Take Your Older Brother's Hand-Me-Down Jacket and Re-Style It, Re-Fashion It to the Point Where It Becomes Your Own. But Don't Just Regurgitate Creative History, or Hold Art and Music and Literature as Fixed, Untouchable and Kept Under Glass. The People Who Try to 'Guard' Any Particular Form of Music Are, Like the Copyists and Manufactured Bands, Doing It the Worst Disservice, Because the Only Thing That You Can Do to Music That Will Damage It Is Not Change It, Not Make It Your Own. Because Then It Dies, Then It's Over, Then It's Done, and the Boy Bands Have Won." - Chumbawamba

Have you considered that underwear is simply a social construction? I have it on good authority that before the corruption of western civilization, mankind was closer to nature and did not have a use for "underwear."

Indeed. I shall continue to post au naturel for the duration of the day. The odor is intentional. I will direct my family's comments to your good authority, sir.
