The ships in the OT are MUCH cooler than those in AOTC or TPM

    Hi folks! Elfdart here. I started this thread because certain trolls keep posting on the "David Brin" thread with their oh-so-clever opinions about the design of the ships in Star Wars. Since ship design has nothing to do with David Brin's attacks on Star Wars and George Lucas, I thought they should have their own thread.

    I, for one think that the PT ships have a sort of Roaring Twenties look. The OT ships look more like something from WW2. There is a reason things look different. Do people still wear clothes and drive cars just like the ones that were around in the early 1970s?

    I like the Slave 1. Yet, my favorite ship is the Darth Maul Sith Infiltrator and the TIE Fighters.

    Hmm, hard to say, but I think that Dr. David Brin has always looked pretty cool. Maybe some of you think the older photos of Brin are cooler? I'll let you be the judge:

    Thanks to Elfdart for creating this thread.

    Now this is how to do concept art. Concept art from the OT, by Ralph McQuarrie. Very Japanese influenced too:

    [image=http://www.theforce.net/multimedia/archive/Images/Classic_Trilogy/Art/Ralph_McQuarrie/A_New_Hope/RMQFALCN.jpg]

    [image=http://www.ralphmcquarrie.com/empart/draw/19.JPG]

    [image=http://www.ralphmcquarrie.com/empart/paint/06.JPG]

    Here is the artwork from the PT. Attack of the Turds:

    [image=http://www.theforce.net/multimedia/archive/Images/Episode_1/Concept_Artwork/swpreft2.jpg]

    [image=http://www.theforce.net/multimedia/archive/Images/Episode_1/Concept_Artwork/stap-19.jpg]

    [image=http://www.theforce.net/multimedia/archive/Images/Episode_1/Concept_Artwork/sw6compa.gif]

    Spot the difference. Obviously, the "real" George Lucas has no taste. The designs from McQuarrie really make you go "wow". Where as the designs for the PT make me go "OK, very funny, now where's the real stuff?". Its not hard to see the difference in quality, you don't need to be a proffesional art critic to see that the PT designs are very sketchy and uninteresting.

    Anyway, I take hope from the fact that Doug Chiang has now gone and Lucas says he himself is more interested in Episode III. Thank the maker, because he showed no interest in making Episode I and II any good.

    EDIT: Actually, take that back. I am starting to wonder if it was just Ralph McQuarrie who I was a fan of. He was a truely awesome artist. I think Lucas owes him alot.

    My Top Ten:

    (10) Sith Infiltrator (PT)
    (9) Star Destroyer (OT)
    (8) Naboo N-1 Starfighter (PT)
    (7) Tie Fighter (OT)
    (6) Nubian Royal (Queen's) Starcruiser (PT)
    (5) Geonosian (Count Dooku's) Solar Sailor (PT)
    (4) X-Wing
    (3) Slave I (OT & PT)
    (2) Jedi Starfighter (PT)
    (1) Millenium Falcon (OT)

    All in all, even though a ship from the OT is my absolute favorite, I like more PT designs than OT designs :D

    More stuff from McQuarrie:

    [image=http://www.theforce.net/multimedia/archive/Images/Episode_2/Art/Ralph_McQuarrie/rmq-coruscantnightlife.jpg]

    [image=http://www.theforce.net/multimedia/archive/Images/Episode_2/Art/Ralph_McQuarrie/rmq-coruscant03.jpg]

    [image=http://www.theforce.net/multimedia/archive/Images/Episode_2/Art/Ralph_McQuarrie/rmq-tuskencamp.jpg]

    Except, we don't see any of this in the film!! Hello??

    Instead, what we get is this:

    [image=http://www.theforce.net/multimedia/archive/Images/Episode_1/Concept_Artwork/concept6.jpg]

    Which only vaguely looks like what McQuarrie came up with 20 years previously. Why did GL do this? He is obviously not continuing the look and feel of the old films at all.

    Isn't there a timeline difference between the OT'S and PT'S?

    Why are you showing only one pic of PT drawing? iam sure there's more you can find.

    I think your being very selective in your choice of pictures Yodaschum, go buy the "Art of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones" book, there are tons of drawings in there just as good as McQuarries. I don't personally have a favourite ship, but if I had to pick one, it would be Clonetrooper Gunship or X-Wing.

    I liked most of the AOTC ships.The Naboo star fighter (the one at the beginning,then got exploded) was awsome since it looked similar to our kind of planes.I think.

    Its not cool though. Its only vaguely like McQuarries original version, its way too sleek, he's basically copied the original artwork (except not very well) to make a scene of the tops of the buildings, except he's changed the look into more chrome and cigar shapes. Believe me, thats the best TPM pic I could find. I dont care how many years are between the OT and the PT, its no excuse for the pictures to suck.

    Well like I said, go and buy the "Art of" books and you won't have to look around for good pictures, there are loads. I get the feeling your simply saying once picture is better than another simply because one is by McQuarrie and the other is not.

    With all due respect, posting pictures proves nothing because it's still a matter of purely subjective opinion. Personally, I love the designs from both trilogies about equally.

    Not taking anything away from Mcquarrie because he is truely a great artist who contributed a lot, but when you post his beautiful work next to rough sketches from the prequels OF COURSE it's gonna look better!

    Stop being so one-sided and post pics from "The Art Of" books from the prequels. They contain equally beautiful production paintings.
