    I wasn't really stating that were 'cool' really, just that they were more artsy and smoother than most of the OT ships...

    Yeah,now that you have mentioned I really think that the Calamari ships reminds to me the whales a lot!(I like them!)

    In fact I love almost all ships' designs from OT and PT,each one in their way,they're cool,and different one from other for a reason,they are from different ages and different cultures,but still are connected by details,I don't have what complain nor bash,so this thread don't really means anything to me,despite by the awesome comparatives pictures...;)

    PS:About the Coruscant concept art picture from some pages behind,reminds me exactly the Coruscant from the final levels of Force Commander,even the giant Imperial Palace looks like the same!(hum,and this also makes me question if there is the Imperial Palace in ROJ even in other version or not,and question about what is exactly the hiding place of Darth Sidious in Ep.II...but this is for another thread...;) )

    Calamari ships are pretty hot. Another winning entry thanks to JOHNSTON, McQuarrie, and that guy with the hyphenated name.

    ShaneP, you don't really think of that streetlight do you? Sometimes I try to see the influence, but the finished design is pretty far removed. The Falcon looks more like a cookie I thought! Or a pie.

    By the way, "revolutionary" in this case means that the OT designs spawned a fundamental change in the look of sci-fi. Where would the Battlestar Galactica saga be without the influential designs of Star Wars? I'm sure Ralph McQuarrie heavily inspired the conceptual artist of BG. Who was BG's artist again?

    But seriously, you can see the influence of OT designs in tons of things released after Star Wars.

    One other tidbit.
    Johnston and Mcquarrie = Ewoks/Ewok villiage.
    I always thought the Ewoks were the devil ? :)

    Since there are so many people who believe Joe was solely responsible for the creative OT ships, why not stop the whining and enjoy the many Johnston solo film projects since 1983.

    People can say what they will about the Ewoks, but I still think they look cool. That village is pretty awesome actually, and I like it far better than any Geonosian set for sure.

    Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a pretty good movie. Sadly, he doesn't seem to be doing any more ultra-badass space fantasy art designs, which is one of his greatest strengths.

    I read Johnston is an Oceanographer, which is exactly what I'm studying in collage.

    Is that really true? I'm not so sure about that, as he went to USC film school. But if so, that just makes him more of a badass! Oceanography rox!

    You're right. Oceanography rocks!!!
    So do the Ewoks and the Geonosis sets.

    Oh you don't like Geonosis???

    Thats another McQuarrie creation that made it into the prequels.

    Where did anyone hear that Johnston is an oceanographer??
    He is still making features such as JP3.

    I disliked the Geonosians more than the planet. But I'm not particularly wild about the planet, McQuarrie or no. Certainly McQuarrie didn't design the Geonosian creatures? Bleh! But they are not ships, so I will not discuss those further. Oh, and their guns (radar detectors maybe).

    The Kamino air-whales, however, are based on Mcquarrie designs. Originally designed for ESB, the Whales were also in the preproduction artwork for ROTJ and TPM. Finally, they made into AOTC.

    Also, the Droideka is based on a concept for the Death Star Detention Droid in STAR WARS.

    [image=http://www.synicon.com.au/sw/tradfed/dest-jj.jpg]

    Although there are some changes, the basic concept is similar.

    On a second note, the shot of the Republic Cruiser docking in the TF ship is a homage to an old Mcquarrie painting showing an early version of either the FALCON or the Blockade runner in a docking bay. If you have THE ILLUSTRATED STAR WARS universe(A book which is a showcase of Mcquarrie and other artist's work), it's on pages 68-69. The book also has shots of Jawa and Tusken Raider settlements which might have inspired AOTC.

    It also appears that some of the Trade Federation hardware in TPM might also have been inspired by the design work of Japanese animators like Hayao Miyazaki(director of SPIRITED AWAY, now in theathers).

    As for the Geonosian designs, they were origianally the Neimoudian concepts for TPM. However George decided to go with animatronic masks and borrowed a creature design from the Cantina instead. However the Battle Droids kept the elongated face look. When AOTC rolled around, the design was reused for the Geonosians.

    BTW the Super Battle Droid is also based on concepts originated in TPM.

    It's important to keep in mind that the Prequel trilogy isn't a "trilogy" yet, either....

    RETURN OF THE JEDI, for instance, introduced a good deal of new designs to the SW universe....

    -The Imperial shuttles(Although they were later added to SEs of ANH and ESB)
    -TIE interceptors
    -Mon Calamari cruisers
    -B-Wing
    -A-Wing
    -Speeder Bikes
    -Jabba's Sail Barge

    I speculate in III we'll see more of the Republic army, perhaps even an early TIE. Also, a chunk of Confederacy/Seperatist warships were designed for AOTC but ended up on the cutting room floor instead...perhaps we'll see these appear in III.

    [image=http://www.starwars.com/databank/organization/ca_tankdroid/img/bts_bg.jpg]

    The Slave Oneesque Commerce Guild starships. The CG are the guys with the Spider Droids.

    [image=http://www.starwars.com/databank/organization/corporatealliance/img/bts_bg.jpg]

    Corporate Alliance warship.

    [image=http://www.starwars.com/databank/organization/igbc/img/bts_bg.jpg]

    [image=http://www.starwars.com/databank/organization/igbc/img/curve.jpg]

    Intergalactic Bank Clan ships.

    Only two of the Confederate ships made it into the finished film: The Trade Federation's core ships and the Techno Union's warships.

    [image=http://www.starwars.com/databank/organization/technounion/img/eu_bg.jpg]

    Think I'll C & P part of this and bring it to the III forum :)

    I'm not too crazy about that bottom picture. That ship design gives me "Battlefield Earth" flashbacks. I saw an interview of John Travolta saying that Lucas told him that he liked "Battlefield Earth". I thought Lucas must have been just saying that to be nice. But after seeing AOTC I'm not so sure.
