Simply beautiful. There's one thing I'm curious about though. The first one is black and white, and then you color them in photoshop. I've read a tutorial about colorization, but I'm still a little confused about it. How is it done? What's the best technique for doing it?

The source pictures I used were not black and white. In fact, the first wallpaper made of this batch was the bottom one. I wouldn't know about coloring things that are black and white...sorry, Aeryn.

 

Aeryn, there's a few ways to colour pictures that are in black and white. The first way is to do the same technique that photographers used before colour film was available (except it's much easier digitally).

Take your black and white photo and put it on a layer. Create a new layer on top of it and set the layer's properties to 'multiply'. Then choose relatively desaturated colours and actually paint on the layer above the photo. Having it set to multiply will only colour areas that are lighter in the photograph and preserve the black in your original image.

The second way is even easier than that. If you just want to tint a black and white photograph to a certain colour, select the whole photograph and go to Image -> Adjustments -> Hue/Saturation. Check the colourize box and then adjust the top slider the left or right to change the colour, and the middle slider to adjust the saturation.

You can use that technique to actually colour the image instead of just tinting it by using the selection tool on your photograph to only select and colour certain parts of your picture, then select a new part and colour that, and so on.

You can also just paint over your photo with your brush mode set to 'overlay' or 'multiply', or even 'colour burn or dodge' for highlights and shadows.

If you really get sophisticated in Photoshop, you can use layer channels and masks to create new red, green, and blue channels and adjust them individually to get a really accurate result.

Sorry to hijack your thread, Yané. Your last stack of pictures is gorgeous, as always. You have a talent for scratching up your pictures until they look aged and beautiful.
