Saga The "Skywalker" Name?

I think Shmi was taken into slavery at age 6 when her and her family went on a voyage where they were captured by pirates and sold into slavery. I assume Skywalker was her own name.

 

I'm curious about Shmi's ancestors, myself. I'd like to know more about the Skywalkers who came before, Force-sensitive or no.

 

'Skywalker' was either Shmi's family name or a name assigned to to her at some point.

And it wasn't and still isn't uncommon for unmarried mother to give her child(ren) her last name. She could do this for different reasons whether she doesn't know the identity of the father or she is trying to protect the little one.
