What is her logic even? That they were confused by the measuring systems? Because I would think that even a layperson's LOGIC here be that an Indonesian pilot, French co-pilot, Indonesian company, ATC between Indonesia and Singapore, and and a European-manufactured aircraft are all going to be on the same page as far as the metric system is concerned....

(I know, I know, she's just an idiot and I shouldn't waste time trying to understand her logic, but I'm fascinated by the level of it's awfulness.)

The logic of "duh, that stupid scientificky metric system that those socialistic Europeans use is obviously going to cause problems and make planes crash".

Uninteresting paranoid fantasy. One, why would a terrorist target the base? Yeah, it's strategically important, but it's not exactly high-profile (plus being an active airbase, it's well-defended from air attack) or easy to reach. Two, why would the U.S. cover up shooting down a suspicious airliner that entered the base's airspace? "But terr'ists!" would probably hold up in court.

All of this. Plus, if it were terrorists, then why hasn't the rest of their cell gone public to take credit for it? Even in a botched up failed attack on Diego Garcia, they would still proclaim some sort of victory. Terrorism makes zero sense in this case. And for someone to go around stirring up drama and pointing fingers is gross and irresponsible.

I caught a moment of a CNN report saying that the plane fell 37,000 feet in 30 seconds. I think you'd get that kind of descent rate if you tore the wings off and let it drop like a rock.

The French prosecutor has officially stated that the co-pilot intentionally caused the plane to descend and crash. He can be heard breathing calmly throughout the descent, even while the pilot tried to break the door down. No indication of motive. His name is a traditional German one, so that a connection with IS, AL Qaeda, etc would not seem to be the case.

messed up. he waited for his co pilot to go to the toilet, then locked the cockpit door. are pilots psychologically tested on some kind of routine basis?

I watched the ORF broadcast of Robin's press conference. My French is awful, but the German interpreter seemed to be doing a fine job. The unfolding of events seems fairly straightforward, if the motive remains obscure.

This is unfolding pretty terrible. The 'locked door' policy seems ridiculous in a situation where there is only a two-pilot cockpit.

Clearly the airline industry needs some kind of magic cockpit door that keeps people out of the cockpit when people need to be kept out of the cockpit, but lets them into the cockpit when they need to get into the cockpit. The door needs to understand the nuances of the particular unfolding tragedy, and then react accordingly.

There must be a way to go much bigger than mere suicide by passenger jet. Suicide by Cruise Ship has the most potential I think. Captain Francesco Schettino paved the way, but made the mistake of ensuring his own survival. Do the Schettino, then steer the whole thing into deep water while denying anything is wrong. Hem and haw until it's too late to launch the lifeboats.

Or instead of a Harry Potter door system, the cockpit must always have two people in it at all times. Another crew member. For whatever reason the pilot leaves the cockpit, the fact he/she has no chance of getting back in if the co-pilot locks the door is as we can see, open to scrutiny.

The third person should be an armed guard with authority to shoot either the pilot or the co pilot, as circumstances require. As a safety override system, the armed guard should be hooked into a remote control lethal injection system which can only be triggered by air traffic controllers on the ground, or by any flight attendant. The flight attendants in turn are required to wear collars packed with a small amount of explosives that will blow their heads off if they endanger the airplane. The collar bombs can be triggered by the pilot and co-pilot, acting together. Also, the pilot and co-pilot should be armed and authorized to shoot each other simultaneously. As a control for this system, 50 of the seats are reserved for plainclothes armed air marshalls who watch each other in shifts.

According to the NYT, they do have something like this. There's a keypad outside that can be used to unlock the door, but there's also a control in the cockpit that overrides the keypad so that it can't be used to unlock the door for five minutes. If the pilot is incapacitated, someone outside can use the code to get into the cockpit, but in this case the co-pilot used that override and descended the plan while the door couldn't be unlocked.

This is also apparently standard procedure which the pilot for some reason didn't follow.

The 5 minute lockout was just long enough to kill everyone. We need something more robust, per my post above.

and then there's the question if they put another person in there and that person goes crazy. I don't know if there's anyway to make complete sure that something like this doesn't happen.

And where is the fail-safe if these measures go wrong too? Samurai's hiding in the luggage compartment would be my answer.
