    The Steam Chronicles

It is the early 1800?s. But not that we know of. No, this is a world of steam and clockwork, airships and submersibles, Victorian and Modern. Queen Victoria sits on the English Throne, and London, the veritable ?Centre of the Modern World?, is advancing readily. Great structures tower above the Thames, and Zeppelins, Blimps, and all manner of other airships - Ornithopters, Bi-planes, and Gyrocopters - fly higher above them.

On the ground, steam and clockwork rule the open roads, though their number and the population prevent it being too ?open?. And it is here that the crime begins. Pickpockets run amock, and murder happens every so often. But this is no tale of crime and punishment! This is grand adventure, a tale of people amongst the hustle and bustle of an expanding world.

    These are the Steam Chronicles.

Excerpt from the Daily Mail, Sunday March 4th, 1829 AD

London is buzzing with news that the famous adventurer Quincy P. Shackleford is about to embark on a new journey. Recently, Shackleford came into possssion of an ancient map that tells of a hidden island, supposedly the final resting place of Mayan gold. It lies to the far south of the Colonies, near Chile, and the esteemed Mr. Shackleford is reportedly assembling an expedition to find said treasure.

Excerpt from Quincy P. Shackleford?s Journal, Monday March 5th, 1829 AD

It was with great interest I read the article in the Mail yesterday, and was quite angered to find that it wrote of the expedition as though it were a mere treasure-hunt. I promptly wrote to the Mail, detailing the finer points of the journey. We plan to bring back specimens of flora and fauna, perhaps some ancient artifacts, too. I suppose, then, that this is a treasure-hunt, though more attuned to the scientific than the financial. We embark on Thursday, as per the Norse customs. The Hammer of the Gods shall drive our ships to new lands!

This is a Steampunk RPG. For those of you not familiar with the genre, it involves Victorian settings and characters with technology powered mainly by Steam and Clockwork. Examples of the Genre include: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Hellboy, Van Helsing, Sleepy Hollow, and many more. An excellent source on the genre is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk

As to characters, you are a member of Shackleford?s expedition. Are you a scientist, archaeologist, botanist, treasure hunter, indentured servant or rich patron? Perhaps even a stowaway... The possibilities are boundless.

It is also possible to be a native of the island, though you?d have to PM for extra-special permission!

Gail was raised out on the open sea until she was twelve, when her uncle decided it was finally time to send her off to school. She studied in an all girl school in London. Six years later she returned to the sea, disguised as a man so she was allowed to be onboard. Her secret was eventually discovered, but the captain of the vessel allowed her to remain in service. In a port in the Caribbean, Gail met up with her cousin again and joined his crew. They returned to England, where her cousin married and settled. Gail was given command of his ship. Years later, Gail was hired by Quincy to lead them across the ocean on his expedition.

    Bio:

American born and raised, Tate ran away from home at the age of 15 to pursue a life of riches in the gold mines of California, Mexico.

But, that's not how things turned out. Instead, Tate turned to a life of crime, stealing food to begin with, then moving on to greater prizes such as gold and weapons. He taught himself the art of the quick draw, and soon became a legend to every city in a 50 mile radius.

Of course, only so long untill the law catches up with you. And, according to the law of the west, it'll be a short drop with a quick stop as soon as they get you pinned down.

Taking what he had, Tate moved to East to New York...then further, onto England, where he lived for a few years untill his stolen gold ran out.

Broke, with naught but 3 changes of clothes and his guns, Tate was back on the streets, but this time pursuing a leagal...and hopefully more profitable...job. Becoming the "insurance policy" for an expedition to a lost island. What could be easier right? Where you're guns and look busy, walk away with some money.

He only hoped he wasn't wrong about the ease of this job...

We have five people now, and if you, like me, are eager to start, then we can.

A few things need to be cleared up first: The game begins in London, on the morning of March 8th, a Thursday. We depart on a ship, and head on a semi-long journey to the Island.

We travel, we arrive, and we adventure. The Island will remain mysterious until we get there, but be on the lookout for a few hints at what it's like.

    Who's ready to start?

    That's the idea. ;)

EDIT: I seem to have forgotten my bio.

    So, here it is again.

Bio: Quincy P. Shackleford was born into a wealthy family, but had to earn his lifestyle.

Quincy served for three years in the British army. He began this career as a clerk, writing reports and managing the paperwork. He always looked forward to working at his father's book company, and got his chance when the war was over. Sadly, when he returned, his father lived only long enough to give him a starting position in Shackleford Books, before dying a year later.

He worked hard for his father's company, rising in the ranks amidst accusations of nepotism and favouritism. He has worked hard to get where he is today, the owner of Shackleford Books. He managed to bring the company out of the ashes, a result of power-hungry men taking control after his father died.

With his publishing house firmly established, Quincy turned his attention to other pursuits. He became an influential philanthropist, recovering many lost relics, charting mysterious islands, and even solving a mystery or two. He has traveled the world, meeting new people, learning about the world, and finding his way. Recently, after coming into posession of an ancient map, Quincy has put together a ramshackle expedition to find a mysterious island.

Born and raised pure Yankee in the Bronx, New York, Irvin J. Anderson grew as the oldest of two in a middle-class Caucasion family. His father, Trevor, being an avid hunter himself had begun taking his oldest son to ranges at the tender but eager age of 5.

Irvin quickly picked up several different styles and proficiencies with weapons ranging from simple revolvers to more complex fire-arms like shotguns, Thompson machine guns, and sniper rifles.

He preferred the latter above all, seeing as it worked best with his passion for hunting, a passion that had been molded into his mind since as long as he could remember by his late father.

Before he managed to finish highschool, Irvin ditched and began travelling the world, abandoning his family, who had been tearing itself apart over petty vendettas. He joined and left behind many crews, spanning the globe many times over, residing in nations from five distinct continents including Asia, South America, and of course, Europe.

Now in his thirties, Irvin has joined the fray with a new crew and captain under the name of Quincy P. Shackleford, being paid as a hired gun for the sake of the staff's protection.

Good pay. Good luck. Good riddance.

    Here we go...

    The Steam Chronicles

The morning was wet and foggy, but Quincy P. Shackleford could've cared less.

Today was the day. The beginning of the expedition. The ship was not 20 metres away from him, and right now, he couldn't even remember it's name, he was so excited. Its skipper was one Cpatain Clere, who Quincy had only spoke with via correspondence. Awkward, yes, but Quincy was a busy man. Publishing companies don't run themselves.

As he left the steam carriage, his aide, Asad, an Arab, followed after him, giving a fair sum of money to the driver. Asad picked up the bags, no mean feat, considering there were a good number of them, about five. Quincy only carried his briefcase and cane, walking towards the boat. Getting closer, it's name came to his mind again: the Acta Era, a Latin name, if his schooling served him correct.

He saw the crew, preparing the ship for it's journey, and noticed Rick Whatman's airship being loaded into the hold. Good. Tate Heckle and Irvin Anderson were due to arrive any minute, unless they were already here. And where was the Duchess of Mayo? Surely, she was already here. Conan Fitzpatrick and James Traber were also on the list, and Quincy only hoped that they were here already.

He came up to group of men, preparing equipment and weapons for the journey. There were five of them, men that Quincy had hired from Switzerland. They supposedly had specialized clockwork gear, and were here to oversee not only the technology, but the transfer of funds, such as gold.

It was a very good to be Quincy P. Shackleford.

The men were keeping a good pace. If they kept working in their pleasing speed they would be ready to set sail before noon. Hopefully the fog would clear up before then.

Abigail watched her crew work from the crow?s nest. She knew they must be nervous about this expedition. She would be lying if she said she wasn?t a bit concerned herself. It was a pretty perilous journey to circle the Americas all the way to Chile. The southern cape America, or La Tierra de Fuego, as sailors called it, meaning ?Land of Fire?, wasn?t really the easiest cape to cross. Mountain large rocks that appeared out of nowhere all of a sudden soiled the whole way. Abigail had only crossed it once in her life, and it had been with her uncle?s crew well she was still a young girl.

The she Captain caught sight of a man boarding her ship. If it was who she thought it was, then it was time to go back down. Gail grabbed hold the latter to the crow?s nest and slid down to the surface of the ship. She moved across the deck and reached the new comer.

?Mr. Shackleford?? she asked the man inquiringly.

    London Docks

The smoke drifted into the air, merging with the foggy overcast weather. The sea breeze wafted through the air, filling his nostrils with a salty smell that he'd gotten used to over time. More smoke came out his nostrils as he flicked the cigarette to the stone walkway and stepped on it, his shoes squeaking on the wet surface. Aw, bloody 'eck. he thought, noting that the water had invaded the inside of his shoes. I 'ate the rain.

Looking up from his soggy feet he noted a man approaching the ship he'd been charged to work on, the Acta Era, the man was dressed reasonably well, almost too reasonably well. Look at th'bloody rich bugger. he thought to himself. Comin all inta th'docks like'e owns th'place.

But he knew he had to go through the formalities. He didn't like this person, he didn't like the captain he saw approach his employer from the ship, women like her were bossy and uncontrollable. He didn't like the hired hands. And he doubted he'd like anybody else he met on this boat. They were all just pawns to him. He would get what he wanted, and that was money. If everything else failed, he would at least come back with money. Even if he had to sail the ship back himself alone.

As he walked up to the man, he began. Who cares if the woman was already talking to him. That was of no consequence to James. "Oy! You must be the guv of dis'ere meetin o'th'minds. Name's James Traber. I'll be one o'the archaeologists on board dis'ere ship."

    Quincy P. Shackleford

It wasn't long before Quincy found himself beset by a gruff man, and a well behaved young woman.

"Yes, I am Quincy Shackleford," he said, amicably, addressing both of them. The man "introduced" himself as James Traber, an archaeologist, but Quincy had a sneaking suspicion that he wasn't who he said he was.

He turned to the woman. "And to whom do I have the pleasure of speaking with?" he asked. The woman was dressed as a sailor, albeit with a bit more style. The thought that this woman was the Captain Clere crossed Quincy's mind, but only for a second.

Quincy shook her hand, and tried to remember his manners. His mouth was a little agape, but he managed to find words to say.

"A, excuse me," he said, before coughing, then continued, "a pleasure to meet you too, Captain. I trust everything is in working order?" he asked, feeling a little awkward talking business with a woman.

Trying to mask this, he looked over at the boat. "I see that the airship arrived safely. Have you heard from Mr. Whatson, yet?"
