I cannot believe there is only 1 response to this thread...

If you have not seen this movie you need to check it out. Maybe the people here are too young for it or something...

It is a great one! =D=

Disagree-courtesly.Best one is Howard Hawks' The Thing from Another World -released in 1951.James Arness played the monster.I did NOT see the Carpenter film because some critics and writers spoiled it for me by mentioning the fact that the film had grossout icky scenes. You don't need excesssive gore and blood to horrify.I prefer the original though it was not exactly close to the Campbell story.Prefer THEM-about giant Ants.Very little excessive gore!

Go watch The Thing. Some of the best creature effects of the 80's, bar none.

Brilliant film?? I don't know about that. I just saw it like 3 weeks ago on one of the ENCORE channels. Don't know if your familiar with that..but anyway. It was good...but it's no Escape from New York.

Nah - I think Thing is the best movie Carpenter has ever made.
The DVD has one of the best commentary tracks too - Carpenter, Russell... and way too much alcohol.

Agreed. The Thing > Halloween > Escape from New York.

I saw the original and it was one of the most non-scary and boring films I've ever seen. I checked out Carpenter's remake years later and thought it was one of the best movies ever. The dog/thing in the very beginning freaked me out, I loved it. It was a great suspense throughout and the characters were really well written and acted.

I guess this would qualify as a little thing that I liked, but the roar of the Thing at the end just before its blown to bits is one of my favorite monster moments.

And lest we forget, the film benefitted from yet another score from the impossibly amazing CV of Ennio Morricone...
