M.E.H. (Gunny) vs. Game, Blouses (PG)

    M.E.H. @ Game, Blouses

    Game, Blouses 100, M.E.H. 97
    Full Box Score
    Play-by-Play

In the final two minutes of the game, the teams combined to shoot 1-for-8 from the field, and commit three turnovers.

The one field goal that was made - by David Robinson, with 10 seconds left - made it a one point game. Two free throws from Carmelo Anthony meant a three was needed, and that was the final miss of the night, from the hands of Vince Carter at the buzzer.

That miss meant M.E.H. had lost to one of the bottom half teams of the league. That dented their hopes for the #1 seed, and put them in a vulnerable position to miss the playoffs.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (22 points, 11 rebounds) and Carmelo Anthony (22 points, 10 rebounds) lead the way for Game, Blouses in a game that was very close across the board statistically, with Game, Blouses just leading each category. They shot just a hair better (47.7% to 46.0% from the field), were just a bit better on the boards (49 to 47, 13 to 12 on the offensive glass), and were slightly less bad from three-point land (3-for-11 compared to 1-for-7). Charles Barkley also contributed 10 points, 13 rebounds. and 5 assists to the effort.

David Robinson's 19 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assist effort paced M.E.H in the loss.

    Game, Blouses @ M.E.H.

    Game, Blouses 110, M.E.H. 102
    Full Box Score
    Play-by-Play

Game, Blouses used a dominant fourth quarter, a spectacular night from Charles Barkley, and a constant path to the free throw line to upset M.E.H. on the road, get the sweep, and put a big dent into M.E.H.'s playoff hopes, pending other outcomes this round.

Entering the fourth quarter down seven, it looked like Game, Blouses would fall on the road and continue their disappointing season. But, a 7-2 run in the first three minutes of the quarter put them back in the game, and a 10-2 run that started a minute later saw them surge into the lead. A 14-4 run to end the game would remove all doubt and give some positive momentum to Game, Blouses.

Barkley scored 27 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists, while adding 3 blocks and 2 steals for good measure. His aggressive approach put him on the line 9 times (he converted 8), which set the tone for the rest of the team, as Game, Blouses went to the charity stripe a whopping 41 times, compared to just 16 for M.E.H. Barkley also shot an outstanding 9-for-12 from the field.

Kareem-Abdul Jabbar scored 21 and grabbed 12 rebounds to support Barkley inside, while Dwyane Wade scored 19 and added 9 assists and 6 rebounds from the perimeter.

19 points and 8 rebounds from Karl Malone, who fouled out with 3:35 to play and his team up 2, and 19 points and 6 rebounds from David Robinson were the statistical leaders for M.E.H.

The sweep is great news for Heffalumps and Woozles, who could move into playoff position with a sweep of their own, and for Ball Don't Lie All-Stars, who could put some distance between themselves and the pack for the #1 seed.

Heffalumps and Woozles (heels) vs. the blue shells (tom)

The stakes could not be higher for both teams in this one. the blue shells with a chance to put distance between themselves and IN THE ZONE for the #1 seed and the important bye to the conference finals. Heffalumps and Woozles know that a sweep, combined with the earlier sweep by Game, Blouses could put them in playoff position with six games to go.

Heffalumps and Woozles @ the blue shells

the blue shells 126, Heffalumps and Woozles 98
    Full Box Score
    Play by Play

With those stakes, it was the blue shells who struck first with a convincing, dominant home win.

They scored early. They scored often. They scored for fun.

They dominated the paint on offense. They dominated the paint on defense. They'll be dominating Kevin Love in his sleep.

Artis Gilmore went off for 25 points, 10 rebounds (5 of them offensive), on dominant 11-for-16 shooting from the floor. Dennis Rodman picked up 20 points and 17 rebounds. All the while, Kevin Love had 2 points, on just one made field goal.

That added up to the blue shells shooting 59.8% from the field, outrebounding Heffalumps and Woozles 51-36, and shooting a ridiculous 58.3% from downtown.

Kevin Durant added 24 points, 9 assists, and 6 rebounds, while Oscar Robertson added 14 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds.

Michael Jordan's 16 points (on 7-for-15 shooting) and Chris Paul's 14 points, 14 assists lead the Woozles on a night that made them feel Woozley. And not in a good way.

the blue shells @ Heffalumps and Woozles

the blue shells 109, Heffalumps and Woozles 99
    Full Box Score
    Play by Play

Imagine how good Heffalumps and Woozles could be if they just played defense.

Take this game, for instance. They shot 54.9% from the field. They got to the line 21 times, and converted 17 of those. They blocked 9 shots. They were outrebounded by only 5, despite 17 boards from Dennis Rodman. They got 21 points from Michael Jordan. They got 13 points and 12 assists from Chris Paul.

And, despite all that .. they lost by 10.

    Why?

Because they let their opponents shoot 55.3% from the field, including 45.5% from three point land.

That performance was highlighted by Kevin Durant scoring 25, while shooting 11-for-20 from the floor and 50% on triples, and Dennis Rodman adding 18 points to those rebounds.

Bird is the Word (DLOTE) vs. IN THE ZONE (BlackoutChristmas)

Bird is the Word @ IN THE ZONE

Bird is the Word 93, IN THE ZONE 92
    Full Box Score
    Play-by-Play

LeBron James missed a contested three pointer that would have won the game with 16 seconds left.

Kevin Garnett couldn't put back the tip in on that miss.

Dikembe Mutombo grabbed the offensive rebound, but missed his bank shot at the buzzer.

And, with all of that, Larry Bird's go ahead jumper, with Kevin Garnett all over him, proved to be a game winner.

And, Bird is the Word pulled off one of the most shocking upsets of the seasons.

Until you remembered that this game was played in Cleveland.

Bird scored 25 points on the night to lead his team to victory, and also grabbed 12 rebounds. Elvin Hayes added 13 points and 19 rebounds, and Gary Payton threw in 16 points, 10 assists, and 5 rebounds.

Those three added up to Bird is the Word winning an ugly game. Both teams shot poorly (39.2% for Bird, 38.8% for Zone). In the Zone also shot a putrid 1-for-7 on triples, and missed 9 of their 24 free throws.

Scottie Pippen's 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists lead In The Zone.

IN THE ZONE (BlackoutChristmas) @ Bird is the Word (DLOTE)

IN THE ZONE 92, Bird is the Word 76
    Full Box Score
    Play-by-Play

In The Zone made (some) ammends in the rematch. And, after a slow start for both teams, shot slightly better the rest of the game, and won big on the boards to get a split in the series.

After a sarcastically thrilling 16-13 opening quarter that had some viewers contemplating a switch to a Lifetime Original Movie, In The Zone heated up on offense, while maintaining a stout defense. They got their shooting up to 41.8% for the game, while limiting Bird is the Word to just 37.6% shooting.

But, the boards is where In The Zone truly dominated, and where they won this game. They had a 64-50 edge on the glass, and got 21 offensive rebounds, to just 12 for Bird is the Word. Leading that charge were Dikembe Mutombo with 14 rebounds (4 offensive), 16 points, and 4 blocks (brought to you by Geiko) and Bill Walton with 19 rebounds (3 of them offensive), 13 points, and 7 blocks. LeBron James added 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists, although he needed a Kobe-like 9-for-26 shooting to do so.

Gary Payton lead Bird is the Word with 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists.

The split means the blue shells now have a three game lead on IN THE ZONE for the #1 seed in the ABA Conference, and IN THE ZONE could fall to the #3 seed, if the Ayatollahs of Rock 'n' Rolla get a sweep in their series.

Ball Don't Lie Allstars (NYJ) vs. The Good Asspicks of Los Angeles County (PRENN)

Ball Don't Lie Allstars @. The Good Asspicks of Los Angeles County

The Good Asspicks of Los Angeles County 120, Ball Don't Lie All-Stars 102
    Full Box Score
    Play-by-Play

The Good Asspicks used a hot start and a dominant first quarter to set the tone in this one, and take the series opener.

The asspicks were up 6-0 quickly, and later used 8-1 and 7-2 runs in the first quarter to build a lead they would not relinquish.

All told, 7 Asspicks scored in double figures in this one, lead by Clyde Drexler with 24. Bill Walton gave the performance of the night with 11 points, 16 rebounds (6 offensive), and 5 assists, while Isiah Thomas added 14 points and 11 assists. That helped the Asspicks shoot 56.4% from the field overall.

Also of note for the Asspicks: Robert Sacre scored 2 points on 1-for-1 shooting in four minutes.

For Ball Don't Lie, who have now lost five of their last seven, Spencer Haywood provided a bright spot off the bench with 14 points and 7 rebounds in just 19 minutes.

The Good Asspicks of Los Angeles County @ Ball Don't Lie Allstars

Ball Don't Lie All-Stars 110, The Good Asspicks of Los Angeles County 93
    Full Box Score
    Play-by-Play

Ball Don't Lie got the split thanks to a steady, balanced performance in the return game.

Julius Erving scored 25 points, Wilt Chamberlain scored 20 and grabbed 10 rebounds, while blocking four shots, and Bob McAdoo added 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocks of his own. That helped to add up to 52.1% shooting for Ball Don't Lie, a 54-45 edge on the boards, and a return of the swagger.

Isiah Thomas lead the Asspicks with 19 points, while Klay Thompson added 12 points on 4-for-4 three-point shooting in just 4 minutes off the bench.

Robert Sacre watch: 4 minutes played, 0-for-1 from the field, three rebounds.

42 (TAFKA Trimaj) vs. The Ayatollahs of Rock 'n' Rolla (JM1511)

42 @ The Ayatollahs of Rock 'n' Rolla

    The Ayatollahs of Rock 'n' Rolla 114, 42 110
    Full Box Score
    Play-by-Play

Shaquille O'Neal and Kevin McHale had big nights, both scoring and on the glass.

That's exactly what you'd expect in this matchup.

That lead to 42 shooting 52.9% from the field, and holding THe Ayatollahs to just 43.5% shooting.

You'd think those would add up to an easy win for 42.

    You'd be wrong.

The surprising statistic in all of this is that despite McHale and Shaq, The Ayatollahs actually won the battle on the glass, and used their second chance points to fuel a somewhat surprising victory in the opener.

McHale had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Shaq had 28 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 blocks. Yet, the Ayatollahs held a 57-42 advantage on the glass, and a commanding 20-9 edge on the offensive glass.

Helping to fuel that was Moses Malone, with 11 rebounds (5 offensive) to help him get to 22 points, Elton Brand, with 5 offensive rebounds (8 total) off the bench.

Dominique Wilkins added 22 points and 7 rebounds, and Kobe Bryant scored 19 in a win he very much enjoyed.

The Ayatollahs of Rock 'n' Rolla @ 42

    42 134, The Ayatollahs of Rock 'n' Rolla 101
    Full Box Score
    Play-by-Play

This was one of the most impressive dismantlings of the seasons.

42 left no doubt in the return game of their ability to straight-up dominate a game.

Despite once again being outrebounded (44-38 overall, 20-10 on offensive glass), it didn't matter in this one.

They simply shot the ball too well for it to matter.

42 shot 62.7% from the field (it's like they were playing the Heffalumps), 70% from three-point land, and got to the line 27 times (where they shot 85%).

Rick Barry lead the way with 28 points on 10-for-13 shooting, including 3-for-4 from downtown. Jerry West added 19, Shaquille O'Neal 21 points, 9 rebounds and 5 blocks, and Kevin McHale poured in 14 while grabbing 11 rebounds.

For The Ayatollahs, Kobe Bryant lead the way with 18 points.

Dwight Howard and Tracy McGrady probably wish they could play every game against the L.A. Courtsiders.

Howard had 22 points, 19 rebounds, and 3 blocks. McGrady added 28 points and 8 assists on 9-for-13 shooting. And, powered by those two, Dwightmare on Elm Street thumped the L.A. Courtsiders.

Halfway through the 1st quarter, Dwightmare already had a 15 point lead. They never looked back, shooting better than 57% from the floor, winning the battle on the glass, and forcing the Courtsiders into 21 turnovers.

Bernard King lead the Courtsiders with 23 points, while Nick Van Exel added 17 in just 21 minutes off the bench.

At least L.A. got a chance to boo Dwight Howard.

Howard, however, got the last laugh, as his 12 points and 21 rebounds helped his team to a road win and a sweep.

Allen Iverson added 18 points and 10 assists for Dwightmare on Elm Street, and Bob Pettit scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. George Gervin was the high scorer of the night with 26.

Bernard King scored 25 in the losing effort for the L.A. Courtsiders.
