Two regular season games left. Both teams with stakes. Here's how it breaks down.

For the blue shells, a sweep gives them the #1 seed. Anything other than a sweep, and they get the #2 seed. So, two wins here, and they literally have a ticket to the conference finals. Any other result, and they have home court advantage in the battle for the conference finals.

For 42, there are three possible outcomes, with very different outcomes. A sweep puts them in the #2 seed, and home court for the first round. A split likely puts them in the #3 seed, and without home court advantage in the first round. Being swept? That's an outcome they'll need to avoid, as that would mean sitting at home and watching the playoffs.

And ... i don't have time for sims right now, so I'll pick that up later today, or tomorrow morning.

Kevin Durant may have had the best individual game of the season. And Reggie Miller may have had the most efficient game of the season.

And that meant the blue shells held serve at home, and gave us a highly dramatic regular season finale.

Durant scored 43 points, and added in 9 rebounds and 8 assists, while logging every minute of the game. Miller, meanwhile, scored 27 points in 30 minutes, and 11-for-13 shooting, including a perfect 2-for-2 from downtown.

In the front court, Artis Gilmore played steady against Shaquille O'Neal, and Dennis Rodman neutralized Kevin McHale. Gilmore scored 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, keeping Shaq's 16 point, 11 rebound effort in check (Shaq did have 6 blocks, however). McHale went for 25 points and 9 rebounds, but Rodman had 16 boards, 12 points, and 6 assists. That lead to the blue shells getting an overall edge on the glass (48 to 38), and getting plenty of easy looks, as they shot 56.5% from the field.

42 didn't shoot poorly (48.4%), they just didn't shoot as well as their opponents, and didn't have the same offensive flow (assisting on 30.5% of their baskets, compared to 42.4% for the blue shells).

The rematch, back in Cleveland, will prove vital for both teams. 42 needs a win to make the playoffs (and their co-tenants at Quicken Loans Arena will be cheering for them), the blue shells need a win for a first round bye.

    Play-by-Play

After scoring just nine points in a frustrating second quarter, and heading to the half down by 14, it looked as if 42's season might end tonight.

But, with 7:07 remaining in the fourth quarter, a triple from Rick Barry completed the comeback and put them on level terms, tying the game at 67.

With 3:59 to play, they'd finally take the lead, with Barry again connecting.

When they gave the lead up with 1:49 to play, you wondered if they spent too much energy on the comeback, and would fall agonizingly short. But, a series of uncharacteristic mistakes from the blue shells (Oscar Robertson turned it over, Kevin Durant turned it over on an offensive foul, and Reggie Miller missed a wide open triple) opened the door, and 42 used that opening for an 8-0 run and never looked back, and cemented their place in the playoffs, much to the chagrin of Heffalumps and Woozles fans everywhere.

28 points and 10 rebounds from Kevin McHale lead the way statistically, but Barry, who finished with 27 points, and Jerry West, who finished with 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists, may the clutch plays down the stretch to fuel the victory.

Kevin Durant was held to just 16 points, a far cry from his previous output, but did grab 11 rebounds and dish out 7 assists. Oscar Robertson scored 25 to lead the blue shells, and Artis Gilmore and Reggie Miller each scored 21.

    42 @ Most Excellent Hoopsters

    Full Box Score
    Play-by-Play

A dominant Shaquille O'Neal and an explosive 3rd quarter lead 42 to a big road win in game one of the series. And, with it, potentially control of the series.

Shaq scored 32 points, but his impact didn't stop there. Really, it didn't even start there. The Big Diesel grabbed 14 rebounds, 7 on the offensive glass, while his defense limited David Robinson to just 6 rebounds. That helped to stake 42 to a 50-43 edge on the boards. The Big Cactus also threw in 6 assist and 4 blocks to anchor his team.

Trailing by 17 at the half, 42 needed a big third quarter to turn the game around. And, boy, did they get it. An 11-2 run to open the quarter cut into the deficit, and was just a preview of what was to come. By the end of the quarter, 42 had flipped the script, and was leading by four. In the 3rd quarter alone, 42 got 13 points from Shaq, 13 points from Rick Barry, and 11 points from Jerry West. Barry would go on to score 33 in the game, while West would score 29.

The Most Excellent Hoopsters would never retake the lead, as 42 held them at an arm's length (or more) throughout the 4th quarter and went on for a big, big victory.

M.E.H. will look to make a few changes going into game two. Primarily, they'll need to find a way to slow down 42's offense, as they allowed them to shoot 55.7% from the field. Second, they'll want to force 42 to take more shots outside - 42 only took 5 triples on the night (hitting 4 of them), and got to the line 36 times (compared to just 19 for M.E.H.).

On the night, Vince Carter's 17 points 10 assists, and 4 rebounds lead the way, with John Stockton's 19 the highest point total for M.E.H.

    Final Score: 42 125, M.E.H. 117

    42 leads the Best-of-Seven Series 1-0.

    42 @ Most Excellent Hoopsters

    Full Box Score
    Play-by-Play

    42 leads the Best-of-Seven Series 1-0.

42 might be the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

But, tonight, the Most Excellent Hoopsters found an answer of their own. That being, how to stop - or at least slow down - Shaquille O'Neal.

The question that remains? Did they find the answer just for tonight, or did they find the answer for the rest of the series.

After the Big Aristotle went off in game one, he was much more limited in game two. Shaq was limited to just 15 points, and committed 6 turnovers, being frustrated all night by David Robinson. The Admiral scored 16 points, but his ability to contain Shaq allowed Karl Malone to score 21, Vince Carter to 18, and his team to own the rebounding edge 53-46.

John Stockton keyed an offense that shot 50% from the field with 12 points and 10 assists.

42, meanwhile, got 26 points from Rick Barry, but shot a horrid 3-for-12 from long range. That long range shooting saw their free throw attempts nearly cut in half from the series opener, as they simply weren't aggressive, and couldn't get the inside game going.

That means the series will head back to Cleveland tied at 1. Will 42 look at it as they took a game on the road, and now just need to hold serve at home? Or will M.E.H. see it as they got some momentum to take with them on the road?

    Final Score: M.E.H. 102, 42 92

The Best-of-Seven series is tied 1-1.

    Thriller.

    Instant Classic.

And, for the Most Excellence Hoopsters? Heartbreak.

42 found a way to survive at the buzzer - twice - and overcame very poor three-point shooting and a very poor night from Kevin HcHale to take home a win, and regain their lead in the series.

After David Robinson split his free throws, Shaquille O'Neal got free and tied the game up with an emphatic slam. At the buzzer, the Mailman couldn't deliver, and we were headed for overtime. In overtime, Rick Barry made both of his free throws, leaving M.E.H. needing a triple to give us double overtime. Vince Carter couldn't find his shot at the buzzer, and 42 was able to hold on for the win.

Kevin McHale had an awful night. Foul trouble limited him to just 14 minutes, and he fouled out of the game after scorign only 6 points with 10:19 left in the fourth.

Despite the struggles from his front court mate, the Big Pierogi had a big night, with 30 points, 14 rebounds (6 on the offensive glass), 8 assists, and 4 blocks. That helped to power his team to 49% shooting from the field, despite their 2-for-11 night from downtown. The Big Shaqtus' big night also opened up the offense for Rasheed Wallace, who went for 26 points and 14 rebounds. Rick Barry also benefited, netting 24 points (thought it took him 30 shots to do so), and 11 assists.

For M.E.H., Malone scored 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but will lament the bucket he didn't score at the end of regulation. Likewise, Vince Carter had 25, but couldn't get to 28 when his team needed it. David Robinson also added 20 points and 16 rebounds.

    Final Score: 42 124, M.E.H. 121 (OT)

    42 lead the Best-of-Seven series 2-1.

    Most Excellent Hoopsters @ 42

    Full Box Score
    Play-by-Play

Karl Malone and Shaquille O'Neal got into a duel during this one.

The Mailman delivered a win to tie the series up, and leave us with a best-of-three.

The Big Aristotle was left to ponder a new way to try to get a win.

Malone ended the evening with 38 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. The Big Diesel answered with 33 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 blocks.

On top of the individual duel, the Most Excellent Hoopsters were able to utilize good defense and frustrate several members of 42 into very poor nights on the offensive end. Rasheed Wallace, a hero in game 3, shot a pitiful 5-for-18 from the field, including 0-for-4 from downtown, in this one. Rick Barry, generally a highlight for 42, shot 4-for-16. In fact, if you subtract The Big Galactus from the equation, 42 shot 25-for-68 from the field (just 36.7%), including a woeful 1-for-10 from three-point land. By Contrast, M.E.H. shot 46.5% from the field (40.8%, discounting Malone), and only attempted 4 shots from downtown.

The drama increases now. Neither team has won consecutive games, but it now becomes a best-of-three format, with M.E.H. having two home games. Can 42 steal another one on the road and give themselves a chance to clinch at home? Or will M.E.H. take the home game and give themselves two chances to close it out?

    Final Score: M.E.H. 111, 42 90

For the first time this series, advantage to the Most Excellent Hoopsters.

M.E.H. shot better, had better shot selection, out rebounded, and, in the end, got an emphatic win that leaves them one victory from the title.

M.E.H. shot an impressive 49.4% from the field, compared to 42.5% from 42. 42 also jacked up nearly three times as many triples (shooting just 18% from long range), allowing M.E.H. to shoot three times as man free throws. M.E.H. contained Shaquille O'Neal in this one (limiting him to just 17 points and 13 rebounds, and seeing him foul out with 2:25 remaining in the third quarter), and narrowly won the battle on the boards 49-48.

David Robinson lead M.E.H. in this one, scoring 21 points, grabbing 9 rebounds, and going to the charity stripe 14 times (thus putting and keeping The Big Diesel in foul trouble). The Admiral got plenty of help from his friends, with Vince Carter, Karl Malone, John Stockton, and Russel Westbrook all scoring in double digits.

Rasheed Wallace personified 42's struggles, as he shot 2-for-11 on the night, and scored just 4 points in 40 minutes.

42 now face a must win game 6 at home, whereas M.E.H. will have two chances to get a win that will send them to the Conference Finals.

    Final Score: M.E.H. 103, 42 84

    42 @ Most Excellent Hoopsters

    Full Box Score
    Play-by-Play

Many people consider "Game Seven" to be the best two-word phrase in North American Sports.

Thanks to a sharp shooting night from the Most Excellent Hoopsters, and a cold shooting first quarter from 42, we won't be getting one in this series.

M.E.H. shot 50.6% on the night, to shoot their way to victory. Vince Carter lead the way with 23 points, on a night when all 12 members of the squad scored.

That came despite big nights for both Shaquille O'Neal and Kevin McHale. McHale had 15 points and 12 rebounds (but fouled out with 4:42 to go), while The Big Shaqtus had 20 points and 13 rebounds, but was also in foul trouble most of the night. Foul trouble on their bigs plagued 42 all series, and it may have finally cost them. And, despite those big rebounding numbers, and despite no one on M.E.H. having more than 9 rebounds, 42 actually lost the overall edge on the boards 54-46.

The first quarter was also problematic for 42. They didn't score a single point in the final 4:33 of the quarter, as M.E.H. went on 12-0 run to end the quarter (M.E.H. would make it 14-0 with the first bucket of the 2nd quarter), hit only one of their final nine field goals, and were rejected three times in the final 6 minutes of the quarter.

M.E.H. used a balanced attack to keep 42 off balance. Robinson scored 16, Karl Malone netted 14, and Anthony Davis scored 11 points in just 15 minutes off the bench.

42 finally found their shot from outside - shooting 50% on triples. But, they lost their shot inside the arc, shooting just 41.1% overall, and 39.8% on two-point shots.

So, Shaq becomes the Big Gone Fishin', and M.E.H. moves on to the Conference Finals, where they will take on Ball Don't Lie All-stars.

    Final Score: M.E.H. 110, 42 91

Most Excellent Hoopsters win the best-of-seven series 4-2.
