This selection, especially the year in which I chose (the infamous game 7 humiliation at The Forum for the Lakers, aka "The Balloon Game") for this draft's purposes, and the year to which that famous clip & call originates from (take a wild guess as-to-who Boston played & beat in the '65 Finals) proves that even the most ardent supporter of a particular franchise can overcome his inherent bias against said franchise's blood rival in order to flesh-out a really great squad for this draft & simulation... that, and I really, really wanted, and thus had much consternation over Trim's pick of McHale.

Ahhh, the memories* that particular clip conjures up: Due in part to me being a television/sports-masochist, and in being rather full from that evening's meal (as me & a pal were watching game 6 at a restaurant bar) -which is why I was even around to even see that live to begin with- : it was just about after that moment to which I finally got up from the table, kicked the nearest chair I could find as hard as I could, and then left. Got outside, pulled out the cheap pack of Swisher Sweets I had in one of my pockets, and proceeded to smoke as I fielded enough phone calls, most from shell-shocked (but not inherently surprised... none us of thought the purple & gold actually had a chance to win 2 games in-a-row in Boston) fellow Laker fans, which went sort-of-like-this: "Good grief, man, it was that bad of a loss. THAT bad!".







Thank goodness, thank goodness, thank goodness, thank goodness, thank goodness for the 2010 Finals, specifically (obviously) game 7. The Celtics/Lakers rivalry can literally be on-hold (ie: relevant) for multiple years, so even though those incarnations of the franchises split their Finals appearances of the late Aught's, at the very least my beloved purple & gold got the last one, a title born out of the need to avenge, which made it all that much sweeter.




*Of course, as many of you should remember, that summer of '07 is when Kobe went-off-the rails, pouting his way publicly to a possible trade out of town; among the many possibilities & rumors of that time was a trade to get Garnett (in fact, that Lakers-message board I lurk at was created that summer, and originally named 'GetGarnett.com') over here to L.A., to either appease Kobe or to build the remaining squad around. That was all rather silly folly, for enough folks should have figured that McHale -then, obviousy, GM of Minnesota- was never, never, never going to send KG to the Lakers.

 

dang it tunes... you would. *mutters*

 

I still think it would be fun at some point to do a smaller draft of just Lakers/Celtics. Or maybe of just franchises with four our more title (Celtics, Lakers, Bulls, Spurs)

 

I guess I'll use Barclays Center since MSG is taken. Not sure my coach yet.
