The Time Limit for Prompting Passwords

Whenever you login, it gives you a choice of being prompted for password anywhere from every fifteen minutes to every 2 days (I think). Well, this isn't really an emergency or anything, and I don't particularly care, but I was just wondering why I manage to stay on for a couple of hours without ever having to type my password again even when I choose the "15 minutes" option.

So, any answers? I hope this is the right place to ask this.

It's probably because the cookie has been set in your computer that has your coded password information in it. Until you clear it, you should remain logged on.

 

Actually I believe that's 'time inactive'.

In the past when I've had it set for 4 hours I've gone to bed and the next morning not been logged in.

 

farraday is right. The cookie that remembers your password is set to expire after X minutes (or hours, or days...) of inactivity.

For example, if you have it set to "every two hours", and you visit the JC every hour, on the hour, the cookie will never expire, simply because the two hour limit is reset every time you visit the boards again..

ahhh, so then if it's set on two weeks, and you visit it at least semi-reguarly, you'll never be logged off if the cookies aren't dumped???

Exactly. Unless you use a sock, and that sock is used in the same browser, chances are you will never have to re-login to your account.
