Serious question for any & all canucks:

Are there no other major Canadian cities wanting a MLB franchise? Ever since the unloved Expos moved to DC and became the Nationals, that leaves Toronto alone north of the border. Do Vancouver, Winnipeg, or Ottawa want a team?

I'm not sure if there is a demand for a team in those cities but I think building a stadium is a big obstacle.

Vancouver lost their NBA franchise, so the omens aren't good.

I think MLB will branch out to south of the border rather than Canada again.

    Europe rather than Mexico.

But the NBA players absolutely *hated* Vancouver. They complained endlessly.

Toronto and Montreal are the only two Canadian cities big enough for MLB, and all of our AAA minor league cities (Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver) have lost their teams too. Independent minor leagues have gone into a few Canadian cities, but that's probably going to be it for a while.

    Halladay was masterful yesterday. Awesome.

Ottawa has a beautiful stadium in a bad location. We could not support the last AAA team. Baseball is just not big here. When the sports-talk shows talk baseball, people e-mail complaining that they aren't talking about hockey. Even today, after that great game last night, they didn't talk baseball. I think if they put the Jays AAA team here, it could work. I would go, and I only went to about 3 Lynx games. It has to be better than Vegas. At least the call-ups wouldn't have to travel far.

You underestimate the draw of baseball in Latin America. They have a religious love for the game.

Baseball is quite popular in Vancouver, because several BC boys have made it to the bigs.

It's a shame if Vancouver couldn't support an MLB franchise, perhaps in the American League (there's your irony for the day: it would make two Canadian teams in the American League).

It would make it possible to round out the AL West to five teams, and could provide a rivalry to Seattle. Good rivalries do provide big business. It wouldn't be like Yankees-Red Sox, or Cardinals-Cubs, or Giants-Dodgers, but the AL West at least could use a real rivalry.

Me, I just don't want my beloved Oakland A's to move--they're struggling to find a site for a local ballpark in the East Bay Area, and if they don't, then the periodic 'moving-to-a-new-city' rumors will start up again. "Vancouver Athletics" has a horrible ring to it. :p

It beats the hell out of the Vancouver Mounties, which was the original name of the Grizzlies, so help me God.

The problem I see with Vancouver as a site is that it is close enough to Seatlle for the Mariners to claim to be their team. If it were done the AL West would be the only way to do it. If a new baseball team comes to Canada it will be a revived Expos

I'm frankly not sure Vancouver could support a team, especially if the players don't want to be here, as happened in the NBA.

    Four-game sweeps are awesome.

Roy Halladay was named AL player of the week.
