I'm not that bothered by recordable DVD's I can't see how they are going to pull it off...so you got Eastenders on a disc so what??!!

As far as taping movies on a digital settup...Have you heard that Major studios have asked Cable and Digital operators to lock movies when this recordable format is released so you cannot tape a digital to digital..

So as I said what's the point...

Also may I add what gittes said about sitting in the sun smoking and drinking sounds attractive also

They're already working on recordable DVDs...... Soon enough VHS is gonna go the way of the cassette tape. Sure you can still buy them, but all your friends will laugh at you. ;)

Oh, as for special features, I wasn't talking about deleted scenes so much as commentaries and "making of" featurettes. I was so thrilled when I got The Dark Crystal and Labrynth on DVD because each came with a 1 hour featurette on how they made the film, from puppetry to interviews with Jim Henson himself..... those two DVD's alone were enough reason for me to buy that player.

And the fast forward/rewind argument still stands. Rewinding movies after watching them just sucks.... not to mention if you want to find a scene somewhere in the middle of the movie you're just doomed to sit there with the remote rewinding and fastworwarding for probably 10 minutes.

I'll let Gittes fight his own battle on that last one!

However, I have to say that point one isn't really a seller unless you hate inconvenience to that level! I've got the special ed of Ghostbusters on VHS, which is cool. You watch the film and then you've got the theatrical trailers and the making of Ghostbusters documentary...

    Sam:
Multiregion, multiregion, *multiregion!!* Find out first if it's been chipped or can be hacked via the remote handset.

DVD of course! You gotta get a player that can play discs from all regions.

If anyone was sad enough to laugh at me for not having a DVD player, I would guarantee you it wouldn't be a mate - I try and be more discerning than that - the ol' 'You haven't got a DVD player oh my! what a loser' line was perhaps excusable if you were 12-13.....

And the fact that waiting 10mins - and I don't know ANY video which ever takes this long to rewind - is such a chore, only goes to highlight the fact that life is too fast nowadays......10mins is a ridiculously short period of time and if you ain't got the patience for that then you're going to struggle when it comes to waiting for something important....labour's gonna be an eye-opener for you innit?

    It's multiregion, don't worry!

Just as a point for me to remember.. what DVDs out there are worth getting from the States instead of here?

I'm not laughing at you, Gittes, if you're referring to me.
Nothing wrong if you're happy with VHS, but I wouldn't go back now I've seen what DVD offers over VHS.

You get them before they are released over here

    They are cheaper

Example Pitch Black came out last August on DVD in the states...before the film was released in theatres

It's worth getting DVDs from the US that aren't available here for a start. Matrix Special Ed, Terminator 2 Ultimate Ed, Tron, Leon International Edition (with 24 extra minutes) for a start... which I have and is great! :)

T2: ultimate edition is the first one, Sam. It's the best DVD out there right now, full stop. Great transfer and sound, scenes not in the original, and amazing extras. It's not out here till much later this year AFAIK, and then probably with fewer extras. Beyond that, it's yoru choice.
In general, the US has more choice of discs, with more extras, much earlier than we do, which is why so many people import US discs.

That's cool... I want to know which DVDs would be better coming from the States... I'll be getting Pitch Black anyway... seeing as it's out now, but the ones I want are the ones with obvious advantages over the Region 2 disks... so what's on the T2 disk? What's on the Matrix disk? Can I get the Aliens Special Ed on DVD? etc etc

Gitties, the friends laughing at you thing was a joke..... didn't you see the wink? What good are smileys if we can't use them to portray emotion?

as for the ten minutes thing, I was making an exaggeration...... compared to DVD it sure as hell FEELS like 10 minutes.... hell it feels like ages when I can do it instantly with my DVD player.

Now don't take every word I say so seriously from now on, K? I don't want to have to literally eplain every single thing I say. I should be taken lightly, always.

CA - Nah mate...speaking to Keph....

Like I said, I think all the arguments Arun used against CDs can be used for DVDs now (marketing etc.) I also don't find that for me, they offer anything more in terms of enjoyment; I have no qualms with people disagreeing, just that IMO, a lot of these products are brought out to keep us buying - we got by with VHS for so long and yet it's suddenly obsolete?! That's just basic marketing....

I must just not be so concerned with that sort of thing....I'd sooner spend the money on some night's out, or a holiday or something else...Still....worse things happen at sea eh?

NB - Like WHAT?! If you think about it, far worse things have actually happened, or always seem to happen, on land - which makes the bloke who coined that phrase a pathological liar....

ED: Fair do's Keph. I didn't notice the smiley - they're too small to look at half the time and I haven't got me glasses today. today....

The DVD vs VHS thing is kinda like the Power Steering Vs Normal Steering thing.. once you try the former, you don't want to go back to the latter! That seems to be the general rule, by the looks of it!

As for the recordable DVD thing... if I am correct, VHS was controversial at the time cos it offered the ability to record things from the TV... there was a lot of uproar about the copyright issues and stuff... with the studios and stuff in charge of DVD, I doubt whether recordable DVD will sweep the world beneath it's feet... same with CDs.. how cheap are recordable CD units? Not the PC ones, the Panasonic stereo type ones... bleedin expensive! Same will happen with DVD, if it gets that far.

I was introduced to DVD 3 years ago when visiting the USA. My ex girlfriend's father had a player and a few films. He decided to show me what it was like... on a 70" TV screen to boot :)

So I was impressed back then and have been keen to get a player long before any of this marketing hype came in to "persuade" people this is the format of the future...

Yes I certainly did - see edit in mine for apology and retraction. Well, apology and retraction are perhaps a bit strong.....

    Keph - no worries m'dear.

Mayhem - That's what I mean! The coercion employed; like I say, I work for one techno mag - which is amusing in itself cause I know bugger all - and if other magazines are like ours, and I presume it is, it's all bluff, BS and other nefarious practices....so much can't tell the whole story.....Must...resist....urge...to....spill...beans...

I can understand your point Gittes. With me it was tried it, liked it, wanted it; as opposed to be told I needed it. I just get the stuff on DVD that is a large stepup from the VHS version. Otherwise with the current price difference, there's no point...

Anyhow, I'm off for the day here. See you lot tomorrow! :)

sorry to bring his up again ( I suppose I started it really) but i used to work in a specialist stereo shop and if you look after it and have a fairly good stereo, vinyl does sound better, aparently its because sound is analog, not digital to start with. being quite old I've got cds from way back that have been hardly played and they've degraded, where as a nice 180 gram vinyl will last almost forever.
