UDC VIII: Return of the Drabble

Hello, fellow writers! After a bit of a hiatus, we're back. It's time for those bit-sized pieces of fan fic goodness to stage a revival. That's right, we have an all new Ultimate Drabble Challenge for you!

What is a Drabble, You Ask?

A drabble is a piece of writing that is exactly 100 words in length. For an author, the ability to express an idea in such a confined space can be tricky – but, that's half the fun of the game.

    The Challenge

100 drabbles in 20 weeks! Every Monday a set of five prompts will be posted by a mod, and you will then have the rest of the week to work on writing your drabble set. For those who complete all twenty weeks, you will have triumphed over the challenge.

    The Rules

    1. Each week's drabbles must be posted together, in one go – that means that all five drabbles should be put up together at once, and in order.

    2. To keep things neat and tidy, please keep your drabbles in one thread. Include UDC VIII in your header.

    3. Once that thread is up, post a link here so that we can add it to the index. You may also share a link when you update throughout the challenge.

    4. When posting your drabble thread, we realize that tagging can be tricky. Do your best, and tag with the era you think you will predominantly write for.

    5. You can jump in on this challenge at any time! Latecomers are always welcome. But you must start the challenge at the beginning and do all the prompts in order.

    6. NSWFF drabbles are welcome too! These drabbles will be all fandom friendly. (Only note that if you do a Multifandom entry, Star Wars drabbles must be posted on the Star Wars side of things. NSWFF is for non-Star Wars fan fiction only.)

    7. We encourage you to get creative with interpreting the prompts! Thread a story through all five drabbles, try your hand at dialogue only, give us a slice of introspection – the sky's the limit!

    8. Because this cannot be stated enough: a drabble is EXACTLY 100 words. No more, and no less. For those who need it, a handy dandy word counter can be found here.

    9. Have fun! :)

    Your Hosts

While this challenge is being hosted in tandem by your fan fiction mods, this is not a mod!challenge. We just want to see the UDC make a comeback, and we are all eager to read what you guys come up with!

This sounds fun. I might even participate, if my muse cooperates. But I did start a Word document on the assumption that it will.

So...most of my drabbles would be Non-SW.

If I do SW ones as well, which out of a hundred, isn't beyond the realms of possibility, do they go in the same thread, or a separate one over here?

First off, I am stoked to see NSWFF drabbles pop up already! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Then, anything that is Star Wars related MUST go on the SW side of things. NSWFF is for, well, non-Star Wars fan fiction. :)

    @Mira_Jade

So I would be linking to two separate threads, one which could hypothetically have 97 entries, and one which could have 3?

    @Sith-I-5

If it's Star Wars, it needs to stay with the SW fan fiction - that's the agreement we made when we set up the NSWFF side of things.

I would ask, however, that if you choose to include a SW week you do that entire week with SW drabbles, so as to not be breaking the prompts up. The prompts should be done in sets of five, in order, anyhow.

(You know . . . you can always challenge yourself to try to do two complete entries - one SW and one NSWFF, too. [face_mischief] That's what I'm aiming for. Whether or not I'll complete it is another matter entirely, of course! :p)

I've decided I'm doing this. Because my brain has been giving me some Star Trek plot bunnies lately, I'm gonna stick the thread in NSWFF, but that having been said, I won't know until this is over if my drabbles will all be in the same fandom or not. This first bunch of prompts, however, definitely says "Anakin" to me.

Okay, I guess I've been babbling on for long enough. I better go make that thread.

On second thought (and reading the posts that were posted while I was typing this post in between doing other stuff), I don't wanna make two threads, so never mind, I'm posting the thread here, and the Star Trek plot bunnies can just go chase themselves!

    Thanks @Mira_Jade

I will definitely try this. Though I'm not great at these; too many become longer stories.

I will be there to read ST drabbles in a second! [face_dancing] I'm glad that you're inspired to take that route. We're always excited to see multi-fandom threads, too - let your muse run wild!

Only, in case you missed it just above, if your muse does say 'Anakin' to you, remember that SW drabbles cannot go in a NSWFF thread. You'll have to make two different entries. :)

(I updated the rules to include that now, for anyone else wondering down the line.)

And, @Sith-I-5 - I completely understand what you mean! I am all about high word-counts furnished with cushy prose. That's why, for me personally, drabbles are such a great exercise. To have to figure out exactly what I want to say, and then figure how to convey it in the frame of a hundred words . . . yeah, it's a challenge! 8-}[face_thinking]

Right after posting that I saw the new posts about making another thread. So I edited the post and decided that the Trek bunnies can go chase themselves, because I'm lazy and don't wanna make two threads for this.

And I've got my thread going on the Star Wars side of things: "She Says in Parenthesis". (Yes, I couldn't resist with the title. ;)) Now . . . to get to work on my NSWFF entry! [face_thinking]

Also, the index has been updated! Let me know if I missed anything. :)

I think Mira counts things as per her time zone, not ours, so don't worry. :)
