The following quotes were taken from this thread in Comms.

Mar17swgirl:
Will the URL of the boards stay the same? Or, if not, will boards.theforce.net automatically redirect to the new address?
Dingo:
"boards.theforce.net" will still point to the main index page of the forums. What will occur is that the links to individual forums and threads won't stay the same as they are right now.
lazykbys:
What does this mean, exactly?

That this format won't work any more?
boards.theforce.net/Communications/b10006/18079401/
boards.theforce.net/Communications/b10006/

Or just that these files won't be around?
boards.theforce.net/message.asp
boards.theforce.net/boards.asp

. . . or is it that the numbers themselves will change?
Dingo:
Simple answer, all of the above.

The format that is in use is specific to IGNBoards only as it's designed for better rankings in search engines.

The files will be different as vB is written in PHP, not ASP.

The numbers are also likely to change to fit in with the numbering system for vB.
[/blockquote]If this is true (and I see no reason why it shouldn't be), the Indexers are going to have major headaches in correcting the links after the move to vBulletin.

Does anyone have suggestions on how we can help?

- lazy

I guess we are screwed. Perhaps the authors can get some idea of where their stories are on the boards (date last posted or something like that) and redo the links... as soon as we know how to do them properly. And let the indexers know.

Or is it worse than that?

It's worse than that.

...

sorry. XD

This does seem rather chaotic. o_O I would figure it's up to each individual author to get the new links for their stories, when they can, and resubmit them to the indexes? And then the indexers can change the links or, if the author doesn't send it, just take out the hyperlink and show that the story is still there, but if someone wants to read it, they'll have to search. (And then maybe they can submit the new link..?)

Hopefully, there will be a better search engine? Maybe? This could be very bad but I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Um... so any idea of when we're moving yet? And if so, Mods, can you make sure that we see the moving updates a little better?

Oh, damn. My stories have been on break for a few months now...

Let's just hope we get a good search function.

I wonder if things like "view most recent posts" will still work, cause that's how I found my story after being gone for a few days... it was easier than searching. do you think that will be reset, or do you think it will transfer?

I have to go through each individual fic in my Obidala and Sabewan Archive, and the other ones? Well, I was thinking of re-coding it.

Currently, you can find everything on these forums by doing a google search like this:

site:boards.theforce.net

and following it with what you're looking for, be it someone's username or a story title, etc.

That might not work right off at the new boards, but after a time, it should. People will just have to bear with the indexers until they get things straightened out.

And just because the links are going to be screwed up doesn't mean anything is going to be lost.

Also, there's no update on the date of the move. IGN is being a pain.

And, really, just go through, find out when your stories were last posted to, and search back to that date once the move happens.

We'll just have to link everything again. It would be worse if we were told that we're losing all the threads.

Edit: And the last move, I did lose some threads. But they were mostly very old threads that got lost.

I'm confused. I'm an indexer for Beyond, so that's bad. What will I have to change? When? And how will I know what to change it to?

There, did I cover everything I don't know! As usual, the list is long.

this is really going to suck for me. At the beginning of my story i have links to all the posts, 1-100, that way people don't have to wade through all the chatter between posts to find them. I'm going to have to go back and recode all of them. Yuck!

It should be easy enough to code that, though -- you just get the topic address, and change the page number accordingly for each link on the main page. Easy.

Of course, if the new board system has a different default number of posts per page...

Brilliant. Just brilliant. I wasn't aware that my day could get even worse, after loosing an eight page assignment that is due tomorrow, at ten pm at night, but I think it just did.

I- there really aren't words to describe it. Just absolutely, positively brilliant.

It's disappointing, but not a huge surprise.

The same thing happened during the move to Snowboard (now IGNBoard), so while it will be a major inconvenience, it shouldn't be the end of the world.

So, I have my stories on my 'favorites' bar on my computer. Will I not be able to use those after the move?

Also, I know we don't have an exact date, but do when know about how many months it will be until the move?
