Those statues that went up in response to Jim Crow laws and the civil rights movement?

They're monuments to history and war time heroism. They are definitely not racist statements. Nope, not at all.

    So?

I'm sure lots of decent men and women joined the Nazis during WWII for one reason or another. They still fought with the Nazis against the Allies.

Too bad. Robert E. Lee was a colonel in the U.S. Army, not in the Virginia National Guard. If he had any principles at all he should have sat out the damn war. Personally I feel that he should have been executed at war's end along with many other Confederate officials and officers.

Oh sod off with that nonsense. The centre right's probably been the most successful at defending most of the basic rights in a liberal democracy.

I know in America the "centre right" is just to the left of Hillary but you were speaking of Merkel so I'm holding you to account globally. :p

    lol no

Come on. The center right has been fueling the far right to use against the left for decades. Now they have a monster they can't control.

I feel you - or if not you, the person who first expressed these seductive thoughts to you - would benefit from actually talking to real centrists-who-lean-rightwards.

I don't think he is referring to the American center-right AKA the Democratic Party. I think he means the centre right in actual Western Democracies.

The German center-right entered into a coalition with the literal Nazi party and appointed Hitler as Chancellor because better Nazis than the SPD and Communists, right?

Great example Even, it doesn't at all apply the hindsight lense to an unreasonable degree, and manages to be historically deaf and blind to the threats of socialist/Marxist/communist groups historically because in revisionist terms it's more memetastic to pretend you're a socialist.

also good job on noting the whole philosophy of containment had literally no reason to be doubted prior to its failure.

So, what about the nuclear situation we mentioned a while back?

I'm concerned over the possibility of Trump nuking North Korea's starving people, which would lead to that mad regime possibly decimating much of South Korea and Japan. And who knows what China and Russia would do to retaliate? It's a really alarming situation. I can only hope that the military and someone, however conservative and corrupt, would at least have the humane decency to pull Trump's fingers off the nuclear button. Ugh.

During the Cold War, the threat of mutually assured destruction was the insane way that the Soviet Union and the U.S. prevented one another from unleashing h--l. But both superpowers still waged unjust wars and covertly harmed so many countries around the globe...all in the name of profits and boons. It seems that back then, capitalism was more left-leaning, at least at home. Certainly not socially democratic per se, but even Eisenhower, Johnson, and Nixon leaned quite leftward, much like Roosevelt himself, for pure capitalists. They knew how to tax people to pay for things. Stalin and his successors, going from bald heads to hairy heads as Russian leaders always do (not joking, it's been going on since the tsars and it continues) were oppressive and yet welfare-ists (or they did some of that all the while as they violated human rights elsewhere in their domestic spheres and abroad). After all, Marx said that socialism could be kind, nonviolent, democratic, and benign...or it can be violent, authoritarian, controlling, and vile. Nowadays, the U.S.'s capitalist system has steered ever rightward, ever since old Reagan and his successors tried to please donors. Too much money in politics does that. It's insidious, as we all know. Putin's Russia has become increasingly hostile and oppressive. He's not the weakling his predecessor was by any stretch, but he longs for the days when Russia actually was a world power rather than a regional one. I imagine we'll hear stories after he passes about how paranoid and vicious he was to his inner circles and oligarchs. Some call him fascist, but it's best to say that he's turned his society into spookocracy, or a combination between a police-state and a prison-state. Everybody spies on each other. It's a messy capitalist system over there. I'm not sure if Noam Chomsky would call it a state capitalist system, but that's what he calls our system. I see his point, even if I think he goes a bit far sometimes.

What it all boils down to is this: The two sides have become even more alike. Superpowers, current and former, have learned that they cannot manipulate the entire world. It's foolhardy for any nation to try to dominate the world, anyway. Empires always slowly decline, self-destruct, or outright transform. It's so weird how we humans love words and we've created these complex ideologies and systems, and yet these beliefs do little, if anything, to help the environment. Our species has a responsibility not to pollute this world. It makes global warming worse, and future generations depend on us to tend to the earth, not destroy it.

So, this was my convoluted way of saying that nuclear weapons and war would further aggravate the problems we face for not only our species, but for our planet, which is heating up. I mean, a bunch of nuclear weapons could be as bad as a major asteroid or comet, and we don't want that. That's why I don't trust people like Pence/Trump, et al, to actually protect the country, let alone the world. As well, we need to actually care about civilians. It's awful to contemplate how poorly they are treated in war. Sherman and others devised total war doctrines, but modern technology has increased the hardship for civilians. It's time we gave a crap about civilians outside of the States, ya know, because human lives matter. That's my rant for the week. I appreciate my those of who you stand shoulder-to-shoulder regarding these issues. Human life and the environment matters. Let's give a damn.

So, Sarah Huckabee Sanders thinks it should be a "fireable offense" to call Trump a white supremacist.
How's that freedom of speech doing, Trump supporters?
