I'm not losing faith in my country. I lost that a long time ago. I'm losing my faith in humanity.

I've never had much respect for the intellect of the American people, but this is beyond my meager expectations. That 35% of Americans, and probably more than half of white America, approve of this mentally unstable bigoted ignoramus just floors me.

Then, when I look around the rest of the world and what's happening there, I'm starting to think to myself not where else can this happen, but where else won't this happen. The list seems to be getting shorter and shorter. It really does depress me.

To be honest, it seems to me that Australia might be least likely to follow these trends. It's highly urbanized, pretty homogeneous, and has a parliamentarian system. It's not fair! Ender shouldn't get to be so lucky! When can we start dishing it out?:(

Australians knew which side of their bread was buttered. Chose not to rebel and got a stable political system as a reward.

Never have faith in anything. Make judgments based on evidence, and evidence shows the capacity of humanity-- not necessarily specific individuals or societies-- to change for the better. Only a few centuries ago chattel slavery was widely practiced, homicide and violent crime rates were tens of times higher, wars were far more frequent and destructive, scientific ignorance was near-universal, and most people spent their lives unaware of the world much beyond their places of birth.

States are all set up to benefit the few at the expense of the many. The United States is a good example. Donald Trump was elected because of the Electoral College, a system set up in order to dull popular sentiment and ensure the security of slavery. He was the unintended consequence of something that was quite deliberate and cynical. The 35% of people who still think Trump is doing a great job deserve blame, but we must also consider the things that have been done over the years-- starting long before their births-- to foster their ignorance and hatred. Human nature is not static but malleable and not simple but multifaceted. I'm certainly pessimistic about humans saving themselves before it's too late, but it's not because of something innate and unchangeable about our species.

Win/win solution: Put a hefty tax on launching nukes, we'll pass tax reform AND make a killing on 'nukes launched' revenue.

It didn't entirely make sense to me. On the hand, they stopped bull fighting because they were supposed to be very environmentally conscientious and respectful of life. On the other hand, they let the last remaining humans murder one another in "games" that were so violent that the text itself compares it to outright war.

No surprise there—the human race was going to go extinct after its children ascended to the Overmind, and chose not to interfere. That part was depressing, but the utopia preceding Total Breakthrough was kind of cool.

    I’d take it.

EDIT: This is going to hurt a lot of people.

What a shame the midterms aren’t next month. Then again, this may help keep the Virginia governor’s office blue and maybe even flip the Alabama senate seat in December (though I tend to doubt it).

    I agree that's completely insane.

On the book, though, I don't see what's noble about it. If you only believe in the sanctity of life because you are counting on harvesting the power of the next evolution, that seems incredibly cynical and self-interested. How is that different than human fiercely protecting cows that make milk and then letting the bulls die in bullfights when they don't care?

Disgusting, but there will be no political price paid. Trump and the Republicans can do anything they want and will not pay.

Donald Trump truly is a piece of human garbage. Today he threatened to cut off aid to Puerto Rico while actively cutting off health benefits for millions. I truly hope there is a hell and he burns in it for all eternity.
