It's not a great logo, and yet ...
    This.

I'm nowhere near as big on Winter games as I am on Summer games. There just aren't the same big events that draw me in. That said, I'm still a junkie and I'll be watching them and waiting for them. I mean, it is my one chance to see hockey on tv.

Some of the snow events are great, but they still can't match swimming and basketball for me. Probably on the same level as gymnastics or so.

I love watching the ski jumping. My friend will go ape for the figure skating. Other than that I'm noncommittal. But being an Olympics junkie I'll watch everything.

What is up with these logos? Vancouver's is better than London's, but holy carps, man... was a graphic designer not consulted? It looks like Little Johnny and Susie got some crayons and went buckwild.

I am going to try and make it to a few events. Whistler/Blackcomb is a really nice ski resort and I have had good times up there.

    Meet the Mascots - Sumi

    (from www.vancouver2010.com)

    [image=http://www.vancouver2010.com/mascot/images/bar_meet_s2_en.gif]

Sumi is an animal spirit who lives in the mountains of British Columbia. Like many Canadians, Sumi's background is drawn from many places. He wears the hat of the orca whale, flies with the wings of the mighty thunderbird and runs on the strong furry legs of the black bear.

Sumi?s name comes from the Salish word ?Sumesh? which means ?guardian spirit.? Sumi takes his role very seriously. He works hard to protect the land, water and creatures of his homeland. Sumi is a great fan of the Paralympic Games. He?s determined to learn all the sports, so he can play and race with his animal friends all winter long.

Transformation is a common theme in the art and legend of West Coast First Nations. Transformation represents the connection and kinship between the human, animal and spirit world. Revered animals, such as the orca whale, the bear and the thunderbird, are depicted in transformation through masks, totems and other forms of art. The orca is the traveller and guardian of the sea. The bear often represents strength and friendship. And the thunderbird ? which creates thunder by flapping its wings ? is one of the most powerful of the supernatural creatures.

So, welcome Sumi to the thread and by the way you can buy him and the other mascots as well [link=http://www.vancouver2010.com/store/mascot/catmascot-p1.html]here[/link].

    Don't encourage them. :p

Actually, I prefer the Winter Games...hockey, speed skating, snowboarding, bobsledding, etc.

But if we're smart, we won't try to emulate Beijing. Well, since we don't have $43 Billion, we won't.

And all this bit about the Olympics encouraging freedom in China is ye joke. Really did that in Nazi Germany in 1936, didn't it?

Yeah, Olympic mascots are usually kinda weird and off-the wall. Don't really understand why, but whatever.

Canada has hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics and managed not to win a gold medal both times. :p

Indeed, they should be awarded the gold medal for such an impressive achievement!

    ...wait.

EDIT: also, 536 days until these Olympics. Much nicer than the wait until London :)

IOC has apparently told Canada they'd better win some this time! Good luck on that notion.
