Title: Lazarus Hunger
    Author: Exeter
    Genre: Horror
    Characters: Rick Grimes, OCs
Timeframe: Before the majority of the events of the pilot; aka very few spoilers for the show

This is a response to the Oct/Nov OC Database challenge, which was:

Note from Ex: Don't worry if you're not familiar with the show. The premise of The Walking Dead in a nutshell: Rick Grimes is a sheriff's deputy shot in the line of duty. He slips into a coma and awakes to find himself alone in a hospital and right in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. That's literally all you need to know to get this story.

Fair warning: there's some language, gore, and generally depressing junk in here. In other words, it's a zombie story.

Oh, I've gotta apologize in advance for any errors that I missed...I wrote this in about three hours trying to make the deadline :p

And you can read the PDF if you prefer it here.

The ambulance was already offloading the guy when she got back from her rounds.

Pace and Keller had everything under control by the look of things, and she wasn't about to emasculate them by stepping in and pulling rank. Pace was watching the emergency dock as per 1089B, making sure that Cobb Memorial Hospital didn't gain any unwanted patients while the building was unsecured; Keller was supervising the EMTs as they helped the medical staff offload the gurney onto the pavement and up the ramp as code 339 required.

And by the sound of it, the poor bleeding bastard had taken a .38 slug to the back. That meant Tera LaFerney would soon be on the phone to the King County Sheriff's Department?they were required to notify local law enforcement in the event they admitted a gunshot victim. Codes 76A-C, 129, 1372, and a bunch of others she didn't have memorized.

Wait?there was a blue Ford Crown Vic Police Interceptor rolling up right behind the ambulance. A stocky, curly-haired man in a sheriff's uniform slammed the door and jogged after the gurney as it disappeared into the hospital. If he noticed Tera's own uniform?or the lame ass stun gun clipped to her belt?he sure didn't show it.

She'd worked the security job for five months and still got amazed every time she watched somebody in critical carted into the ER. At how calm everyone was. The ambulances coasted in without a siren, the paramedics profesionally explained the situation to the staff on arrival, and with no more fanfare or excitement than a main course being wheeled into a banquet hall they escorted patients to their destinations.

That wasn't to say Tera had never been in any adrenaline-soaked situations. She'd been in plenty. But never one where calm could really be used to describe her demeanor. Tense, sure. Edgy, you bet. Wired, absolutely. But calm? Not a chance in hell.

Of course, she didn't know the half of it. Not yet.

The bag of BBQ Fritos slid ever closer, hung tantalizingly for a gravity-defying second, then toppled.

And became stuck on the edge of its dive, as it always did.

?Lousy piece of?evening, Dr. Aceway,? Tera caught herself as she spotted the Chief of Emergency Medicine walk past the first-floor lounge. And as always, he ignored her.

Speaking of lousy pieces. But Aceway was that way with everybody?other peopl

I've never seen the show, but I've definitely caught 28 Days and 28 Days Later. Awesome cliffie at the end. Will they survive? Will the zombies get them? I'm guessing maybe a part two to this eventually. And I guess I'll have to track down The Walking Dead sometime. Great job with the challenge. =D=
