Well, I think that between Ep. 3 and Ep. 4, the citizens of the Empire will start to realize how corrupt the government really is.

There's tons of Expanded Universe stuff that covers this (perhaps this belongs in that forum).

Shadows of the Empire covers the year between Empire and Jedi, while other books and comics cover years between Ep I and II, Ep II and III, and Ep IV and V. There's even some stuff that covers between EP III and IV, but I'm not too familiar with it.

wow one year between jedi and empire.. so were they building the death star during empire but we just didn't see or does it only take a year to build an operational deathstar?

    THE_MISSING_TRIPLET: Well, yes. :)

The construction site of the second Death Star was a point above the surface of the forest moon of Endor, in a remote region nominally governed by Quanta Sector's Moff Jerjerrod. It seems as if the half-completed state of this new Death Star was achieved after only a few months of construction.

If it had been finished, the volume of this battle station would have been more than three or four hundred times that of the original. In order to avoid overburdening regular naval supply systems, the Emperor partly outsourced shipping of raw materials to the XTS corporation. Nevertheless, the scale of the project was still much smaller than the scale of the whole galactic society, and it remained quite secret until it was deliberately leaked to Bothan spies.

If the radius of the moon was about 5200km then the Death Star was situated approximately 2000km above its surface. It should subtend about 27 degress of arc on the Endorian sky near the garrison, which is consistent with views of the sky seen on film. The motion of the Death Star was such that it remained directly above the generator of its protective deflector shield. The orbital period therefore matched the spin period of the Moon. In other words, it behaved as if it were in a synchronous orbit.

Unfortunately the velocity required for a stable orbit at that altitude would give rise to an orbital period of only a few hours. For the measurements of the moon used in this document the orbital period is a mere two and a half hours. This means that they "day" of the moon must be only two and a half hours long if the Death Star II is to remain above its shield generator and not overtake the moon's rotation. On the other hand if the Endorian rotation is more comparable to Earth's day then a true free geosynchronous orbit would require greater distances from the moon. Either the moon had a very rapid spin to match such a short Death Star orbital period, or else the Death Star's equilibrium position was dominated by more than just the moon's gravity. A supplementary repulsive force is needed to prevent the Death Star from falling from the Ewoks' sky. The required force must amount to about one third of the Earth's surface gravity.

It is possible that the incomplete battle station was equipped with massive repulsorlift generators to push against the gravity of the moon. However if this were so then it would be difficult to explain how the superstructure could be supported in the early phases before its main reactor and repulsors were activated- perhaps initial construction did take place elsewhere in the system with the station towed into its final position after completion of its repulsor engines. ;)

Ken Kenobi- And you have a nice day ;)

If you think about it. The second Death Star probably was started shortly after the first one was blown up by Luke. Which would be four years of contruction when we see it in the ESB. The Emperor was in a hurry, so he wanted it operational before it was completed.

Sounds good cuz it would take some time to build a death star.(even if it didn't look like it on the outside). Was there a reason we weren't shown it in ESB or even hinted around it?

Ok, here is a synopsis of the construction of every Death Star (courtesy of the SWTC) known to be constructed (or at least begun to be built, if not completed), listed with their identification. :)

The Death Star [v. Prototype] [image=http://www.theforce.net/swtc/Pix/books/weg/jasb3.gif]

The Maw is a tight and seemingly unstable cluster of black holes. At least one Death Star prototype was constructed at a secret and isolated research facility situated within the perilous Maw black hole cluster near the Kessel system.

Its stability is something of a mystery; such a collection ought to have ended in collision and coalescence of the holes long ago. Some astrophysicists had speculated that the improbable stability of the Maw indicates that it was deliberately constructed by an advanced civilisation at some time in the forgotten past, for reasons unknown. In any case, the interior of the Maw is a virtually unnavigable cauldron of deadly radiation and infalling plasma contorted by dreadful gravitational forces. The Maw has long been avoided as a peril to hyperspace travel near the planet Kessel. Safe passages around or through the Maw are extremely difficult to calculate; approaching the black hole cluster is virtually suicidal. Along with the secret discovery of a gravitationally stable zone hidden inside the Maw, this remoteness and inaccessibility made it an ideal site for Grand Moff Tarkin's secret superweapons research facility.

    The Death Star [v. 1.0] [image=http://massassi.yavin4.com/sw_img/e4spac14.jpg]

The first fully functional Death Star battle station was built using convict labour in orbit around the tropical penal world of Despayre in the Horuz system. As a precaution against premature disclosure of the Death Star's existence, the planet was used as the target of one of the earliest test firings. Rather than be annihlated, the military forces previously stationed on Despayre appear to have been redeployed in detention duty aboard the Death Star. The fate of the convicts is unknown.

A mere two years elapsed between the initiation of the Death Star project at the secret Maw Installation and the time when the first operational Death Star destroyed Alderaan. This is indicative of the astonishing efficiency of the Imperial research effort, not to mention galactic construction technologies and the supply system for the raw construction materials.

Some have suggested that the original Death Star project strained the resources of the Empire, but this couldn't be literally true, considering the ease with which the Death Star II (hundreds of times more massive) was built. The initial research effort needed to prove and develop the superlaser concept may have been much more expensive than the actual construction of a battle station. The constant need to keep the project a secret from the prying Imperial Senate would also be a burden; four years later the Emperor could act with impunity. Indeed it is even possible that the first Death Star depended exclusively on the local resources available to Grand Moff Tarkin, which would be nearly nothing compared to what is available to the Empire as a whole.

    The Death Star [v. 2.0] [image=http://www.theforce.net/swtc/Pix/vidi4/rotj085.jpg]

The construction site of the second Death Star was a point above the surface of the forest moon of Endor, in a remote region nominally governed by Quanta Sector's Moff Jerjerrod. Nice pictures, Ken. I especially like that one of the twin Death Stars. That was a scrapped idea from one of George's first drafts of ROTJ, wasn't it? In addition to all the Death Stars you've listed, there were two more: the Tarkin and the Death Star III.
