Another good example is the USA.

People are described as African-Americans or Italian-Americans, but you never hear people described as Anglo Saxon-Americans... why, you have to ask!?

Do you hear the term Anglo-Saxon American?

Personally, I have heard Italian-Australian before, as well as terms like American-Australian. It's maybe a sad fact that anglo-saxons generally refer to themselves as Americans or Australians, but the mindset behind it is that we were here first (disregarding the native people being here first), so we are simply Australian, because we founded the country. Yes, it is possibly bigoted to an extent, but it's how our culture is.

Besides, those who refer to themselves as Italian-Australian, or even just Italian, are usually first-generation migrants who haven't lived here their entire lives.

Not the people that I have met.

Come on Hawk, you are from Melbourne... one of the world's most multicultural cities.

When I was at CML Head Office, I worked with a lot of people with Italian background / descent, people my age that were born here. And they said that they were either Italian or Italian-Australian. Not Aussie.

That's their upbringing more than anything. Frankly, I don't see what's wrong with respecting your heritage - I'm a third generation Australian, so this is a large part of who I am, but so is the fact that I'm 3/4 English. Those who were born here, but have parents who were born overseas, get their culture fed to them by their parents, as well as living in our culture here. They are Australian, but that's not all of who they are, and I respect those who can combine two cultures to be a unique person. :)

Nah, we're usually just referred to as "Anglos" in some large cities (specifically in LA).

If I'm asked where I am from, I'll say South Africa. If I'm asked what i consider myself to be, I'll say Australian. I've spent half my life in both countries, and I have no loyalties whatsoever to South Africa...

    But that's just me.

Gatherer, you sound jealous that you don't have another country you can go off and work in for an unlimited period of time. :p

Personally, I was born in England but I've spent 11 of my 17 years in Australia and am a dual citizen. I want to travel when I'm a bit older and am very grateful that I can work most anywhere in Europe without worrying about a work-visa running out. [face_mischief]

...I wonder if there are threads in other FF boards about 'those bloody aussies forgetting their heratige'. ;)

Exactly. It shouldn't. I just happen to strongly dislike the place where I was born :D

Why are we bothering with these ridiculous threads? Gath's gone for 5-6 months, we can relax till he gets back and finds another minority to hate with his little black heart.

    E_S

EDIT: Realised the irony of using "black" to describe the heart of a man who hates Aborigines. Laughed. Edited.

I'm Australian, through and through. If the Spanish or Scottish or Poms went off to War I couldn't give two hoots. My parents were born here, I was born here, and my grandparents spent the majority of their lives here. That's all that matters, and all that should matter.

I think that allowing people to have dual citizenship is a great idea. It helps faciltiate the movement of human capital and trade. For example, I am English/Australian, I go back to England, gain a PHD there and gain invaluable work experience there, using my British Citizenship to do so, then I come back to Australia and I use my greatly increased skillset to help the Australian cause. Further, I am very proud of my erstwhile country-England is a great country-did you know that the English have won twice as many Nobel Prizes, per head, as any other nationality. Not to mention that the English have a great sense of humour and of justice. So I make profound expostulation at The Gatherer's racist and ill informed arguement. I am a proud Australian/English Citizen! ;).

I am proud of being called an Australian

But damn...No other thread than this one had piss me off so much.

I am of Dual citizenship and I have no problem with people with having them.

Yes there are those people who came to Australia as refugee.

But on my part I did not came that way. It was through work Visa by my father.

I have been here for 16 years. I am proud to call myself Australia and am proud to be call Thai.

Those comments I found to be of utmost unthinking and disgusting I ever heard.

You just lost a tonne of respect from me pal.

Guys, seriously, save your arguements till Gatherer gets backs, so we can have a pointless debate with a bigot then. We should be using this time to have fun.

And guess what? I know he's reading these posts 'cause I got an email from him about my post here.

    So everyone say, "HI GATH!"

Here's the thing. I was born in England, but spent the majority of life in Australia. Just like the old Peter Allen song, "I still call Australia home!", and I have dual citizenship, but the thing is, I have been living in England for the last seven years, but I still regard Australia as a better place to live. People are friendlier. Working conditions are better. The standard of living is better. Heck, I still have my Australian accent. In the end, I would rather live there than here, but does that make me a pariah? I don't think so.

I feel that as long as people want to live a country, and respect that country, and want to help the place, as well as themselves, then I think that people should be allowed to live wherever they want.

You guys are a bunch of unthinking idiots. 'Citizenship' is just a meaningless word used for justification to coerce people in following made up 'laws'. People should be 'allowed' to go to any country they want and work without bothering with this stupid thing called 'citizenship'. Because 'citizenship' doesn't mean anything, except as another euphemism employed by Government (ie. such as a 'King' and his 'subjects').

I love how you come out of the shadows to cast judgement on everyone else's intelligence whilst being an economic rationalist at the same time. The irony may be thick and fast but you don't want people choking on the bs, do you Nyder?

You guys are a bunch of unthinking idiots.

Thank you. And have a nice day. :)

'Citizenship' is just a meaningless word used for justification to coerce people in following made up 'laws'.

Now, forgive me if I am wrong (if you are capable of forgiveness), but I was under the assumption that if a person was in a country (whether they have citizenship of that country or not), they had to follow the laws of that country to a certain degree.
I don't know about religious laws of a country, but if you went to Singapore, for example, and smuggled drugs into the country, you would be charged under the laws of that country. Citezenship of no citizenship, the laws of that country would still apply...

Nyder made an interesting comment in the QLD board. He called someone a fundamentalist because they mentioned they went to church for Easter.

Does anyone sense a major irony here????!!!!!!

BTW - I call myself Australian because it is much easier than Italian-Croation-Hungarian-Austrian :)

Ender Sai is very much correct. No matter how much an individual wants to pretent that national boundaries are meaningless, I'm sure that Nyder would have no qualms about holidaying in North Korea.
