This isn't reverse world thread, Wocky. Please take this discussion seriously; as it were tagged "Senate"

    Which it should be.

It happens in basically every comic book or fantasy use of Nazis that exists. Hellboy, Captain America, X-men: First Class are probably the most recent examples. In fact, in recent history, they greatly outnumber the fictional stories where the "Nazi" characters actually do subscribe to Nazi ideology ( has there even been one of those since (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade?). Mostly, I guess it's because writers seem to want the sense of elemental evil associated with the regime that committed the Holocaust, without having to address any of the more weighty or serious things that would come up when dealing with the regime that committed the Holocaust.

I'll give you Charlotte Gray, I guess, but The Pianist was based on someone's memoirs. Their subject matter thus made it impossible for them to go for the disavowal and still make a credible run at presenting that guy's story. As I explained, the only pieces that bother with "real" Nazis are pretty much period historical dramas. Almost any story that won't be fundamentally compromised by doing it seems to try for the "I'm a Nazi but I don't really agree with race theory" end run.

Inglorious Bastards is your first indisputably legitimate entry, since on review it seems like Charlotte Gray was also heavily based on one particular historical figure, though it was less consciously biographical of her than something like The Pianist was of its subject.

I remember Hans Landa saying, "Jew hunter? I was a detective, a damn good one, and yes, some of the people I investigated were Jews."

Hans Landa, being the platonic form of movie Nazis, embodied what Wocky has said. It's a good catch.

    Also religious artifacts, they love.

Doesn't matter if it's genuine or not. He was still essentially disavowing the anti-semitism of the Nazis. He did betray Hitler, you know. I view Landa as very selfish and disloyal. He does what's best for him. Under the Nazis, he hunted Jews - not because he necessarily hated Jews - but because he was doing whatever he could to further his own ambitions. He used Nazi anti-semitism to his own advantage, just like he used the Nazis. Once the Nazis and anti-semitism were no longer his ticket to where he wanted to be, he ditched them.

But obviously, Aldo the Apache couldn't abide by that.

Haha. I guess that's what I get for commenting on a movie I haven't seen. It would seem to me OZK's point carries the day.

Yet you do this. All the bloody time. Or even with movies you partially see but fall asleep through. Seriously, why the hell do you do this? Just to hear your voice (so to speak)?

What other films are you referring to? The only thing I did here was blindly accept someone else's remarks about a film without comment.

Wock, I'm not going to browse all your posts to point out references. But it's a matter of record and I'm sure others here will attest to that.
