    My (semi-biased) wishlist:

-Alema Rar (significant villain through two series)
    -Cal Omas (surprise!)
    -Corla Metonae (I'm shameless!)
-Cronal/Blackhole (Mindor alone warrants it- and you can piggy back characters like Fenn in who might not get their own entry otherwise)
    -Daala (fairly obvious)
    -Darth Krayt (obvious)
-Darth Wyyrlok (don't make me change banners to prove why)
-Jaden Korr (Crosscurrent seemingly being a staple for a bit)
-K'Kruhk (Dark Times, Legacy and did I mention I'm shameless?)
    -Kar Vastor (again, Mindor)
-Lomi Plo (major villain for a trilogy of books, influential in events that led to Caedus)
-Mirta Gev (how can we not have an entry for a new Fett?)
-Nym (any ROTS-involvement of his, if it exists [which, given his past exploits, is quite likely] plus possible connection to Corla/Droids/escape pod fiasco. Because I'm, well, you know.)
    -Rain/Zannah (somewhat obvious, IMO)
-Raynar Thul (a central figure of Dark nest events, as well as seemingly some role to play in FOTJ)
-Tahiri (be nice to see what modern day Tahiri looks like, post-Flow Walk junkie stage)
-Vongerella (she's gotta get a name sometime, and her connection to Kyle, Jaden and either Lumiya or The One Sith, as well as the Vong/Force issue, would make her relevant to other characters and events in the book you'd have to cover)

The story-style entries of the EGTTF was a pleasant surprise and made it a very engaging read. However, for a character guide, it would seem biographical entries would be ideal to at least some degree. You did a good job sneaking in 2 paragraphs of new info for the NEGTD, but for characters I think there needs to be more of it (but then you'd probably have more page room since character pics wouldn't take up an entire page).

I think a balance would be absolutely fantastic- have the biographic entry, then insert either a story about them or in-universe recorded anecdote about them (be it holocron or hologram or mission debriefings, etc) to close up the entry in a way that might further elaborate on the character, their history or highlight a point made in the biographical entry.

But there needs to be a significant amount of new information to make it a must-buy, and having some original story material like that really adds something unwookieeableto the value.

    Alema. A hundred times Alema.

Such an important character in NJO, Dark Nest, and LOTF. A principal antagonist in the post-NJO world.

This seems like such a grand endeavor at this point, but I'll try my best to make suggestions.

I'd personally like an Essential Guide to EU characters, but since I suspect it will be a difficult sell without Obi, Luke and the gang I'll drop that idea right now.

    Yeah, definitely Tahiri.

Remember how much promise her character held after the NJO? Longful sigh...

As a pretty significant Force-based organization in the Legacy Era, the Imperial Knights have gotta get some love. I imagine that Roan Fel is probably a given, but as he's been chilling on Bastion for most of the series, an entry on Antares Draco would be indicative of all the ass that the IK's routinely kick.

maybe it's too obvious, or maybe she's just been around so long that she feels like she coulda been part of the last character guide, but as far as I can tell, no one has mentioned her yet: Asajj Ventress.

Seriously, she was created within a year or so of the NEGTC's publication, so basically her entire story has yet to be included in any form in an Essential Character Guide. Comics, novels, 2D animation, 3D animation- there's a lot of ground to cover there, up to and inluding her post-Obsession status (even if it would be a difficult minefield given TCW's continuity haziness).

As far as TCW goes, I'd predict Embo might be worthy of an entry by time this could be published, given how he was saved from death out of popularity, has proven pretty popular amongst fans and is likely to show up again in the future.

As far as group entries go, I'd also like to suggest some group entries for Clonetroopers/Stormtroopers. Have one entry touching on key troopers from TCW. Have a group entries for Delta Squad, Omega Squad, NULL ARCs, ARC Troopers, Clone Commanders, then troopers from each of the 5 movies they appear in (so, AOTC troopers, ROTS troopers, ANH troopers, etc- mine those Decipher cards!), etc. Maybe a group entry notable EU troopers like Davin, Legacy 501st, etc (characters that otherwise wouldn't be worthy of even a supplemntal entry). Might help mentally tracking them a lot easier, which can be pretty tricky (at least for me).

I think the key to getting a good mix of characters is to treat it as the New Essential Guide to Characters, Volume Two. So people who haven't had anything new added to their story, or not much new, don't need to be revisited. Whether it be Durga or Sebulba or Jerec or Ysanne Isard or even, if the space is needed and you're feeling bold, someone as important as Ackbar (for whom the only addition would be "He made a battle plan for Ebaq and then he died.").

I also think the suggestion of group entries is great. A great way to save space but still include important characters.

Original content is the most important thing. What I really want to see in an entry is a complete story. Something like Raith Sienar's entry, which really went out and invented a bunch of backstory for him as well as establishing post-Rogue Planet stuff, is what I like. It was a birth-to-death biography, and if Rogue Planet didn't give all that you filled it out. I want a book like the Atlas that aggressively goes out and establishes information, that ties stuff together and makes needed retcons and offers cool new details. I want an entry on Hobbie Klivian that gives the poor guy an age, gives an explanation for the nickname Hobbie, tells us what he was doing during the Yuuzhan Vong War and Second Galactic Civil War, and finally definitively retcons the Rand Ecliptic mutiny. I want an entry on Wes Janson that gives him an age and a background that begins sometime before he's in the Tierfon Yellow Aces.

Also, great artwork. And IU blurbs would intrigue me, though I'd be willing to lose them if it meant more space for more characters who were getting some expansion.

As for actual characters, I'm working on a comprehensive list that I'll have up tomorrow.:p

Eh, from a pure EU-fan standpoint, sure, that would be great. But if we're discussing anything that could realistically come out, that wouldn't fly; if I'm Joe SW Consumer buying anything called "Essential", I'd have certain expectations going in of what it'll tell me. People who see it in a store are probably going to want to know what Ackbar's deal is, or who this Thrawn guy is that everyone talks about. Leaving stuff like that out, or telling them "nope, you have to buy this other book" don't really seem like they'd make for happy consumers. Just like how even the Atlas had to devote some pages to recapping the movies.

I know I'm not usually the "but MARKETING" guy, but I figure if we're discussing this as at all a realistic hypothetical, it's something that ought to be taken into consideration. In a perfect world, I'd like an Essential Guide to All My Favorite Characters (which is a list I could make here too :p).

EDIT: That's not to say I want the NEGTC copy/pasted. What would be good to satisfy the above concern while also making it worth EU fans' whiles is to give something significant and new on those characters that don't have much going on by themselves. Give Ackbar a young adulthood, something about the politicking of Isard, etc. Those IU passages could really help here; repeating Ackbar's NEGTC entry might not be interesting, but a bit from his memoirs or something would be.

EDIT 2: Meh, I sound like a real killjoy here. Let's go on posting cool things we want to see.

While recounting events of the novels and comics, this book should also invent new information in the same vein as the Essential Atlas (maybe even use new EA info in this book [face_whistling]). I think:

    Cal Omas is a must
Expanded entries on each member of Skywalker/Solos (Ben gets a full entry now)
Ahsoka Tano (it haad to be done)
    Yularen deserves one
    Zayne, Jarael, Gryph
    Cade, Krayt, ROan Fel
Jag needs a complete entry (possibly in place of his father's? Soontir isn't that important)
Jedi such as Aayla, Kit, Shaak Ti, Luminara deserve their own entries now
And I must add this after reading Rogue 1 and a half's recent reviews: THE SKULL QUEEN :p

    In-universe? Yep.

    Cal Omas? Yep.

    Zayne Carrick? Yep.

Those are probably the three things that I'd like to see the most. Two of them would be in there, if/when this would happen. I really liked the in-universe nature of the Atlas.

An additional thought that occurs to me about the artwork is I'm not particularly interested in the generic rigid marionette poses from the NEGTC. What I liked about the artwork in the Atlas and the EGTTF was neither had arbitrary "This is an image of Naga Sadow in a skirt" pictures, but were much more interesting action shots (e.g. Shira Brie in the tank) and/or portraitesque headshots (e.g. Niathal).

Meaning, for characters like Zayne who we already know what he looks like, I'd prefer more scenic images than just a rigid drawing of "This is Zayne Carrick. He wears green and has a lightsaber." For instance, while Haazen and Demagol probably won't warrant their own articles as they'd just be repeating what was already in Zayne's, but I'd love to see extra characters represented in artwork by having more action poses, e.g. have an Atlas-class artwork shot of Zayne duelling Lucien with Haazen looking on.

That sort of thing. Three characters in one, even if it's only worth having an actual article for one of them.
Yeah, I'd like things like that. Ackbar's dead so it's unlikely fleshing out his youth is going to ever step on anyone's toes, and even in future stories set back when he was alive, it isn't like what he was like as a young fishling when he first popped out of an egg has ever come up before, meaning it's probably the sort of stuff that'll only get explored in a sourcebook anyway, so makes sense to do just that.

Heck, even with the Big 3, if you're not even an EU fan and are buying this because you want to know more about that cool Han Solo guy from the films, you're not going to be buying it to read what happened in ANH: everyone already knows that. What you'll be buying it for is to learn more about where this Han guy came from, and what he did after ROTJ. If that provides an excuse to possibly add a bit more info about his childhood, then fair do's, everyone's happy, EU and non-EU fans alike.

(Admittedly, Han's perhaps a bad example, as personally I'm actually hoping they dig up the cut ROTS content and he shows up in TCW at some point. But, ignoring that, hypothetically I think even the Big 3 can be done in a "General Skywalker once fought this guy called Lord Shadowspawn" way to provide even us hardcore EU junkies with some interesting new nuggets about potential future/untold stories.)

I agree to a certain extent -- it's unlikely they'd just remove Ackbar, but beyond the extremely obligatory movie/EU-royalty characters, anybody who's already covered should be left out. For example, Booster Terrik is probably a more important character throughout the EU than Fyor Rodan. But there's nothing really new to say about Booster, so leave him out and include Rodan. Tycho Celchu is important, but he already got an entry. Give his page to Valenthyne Farfalla or Etahn A'baht. I don't care if Zuckuss is in the movies; include Ephin Sarreti instead. That kind of stuff.

Okay, I agree on that. Tycho probably isn't as essential as I considered before.

On the subject of prominent EU characters, Winter and Garm Bel Iblis are two notable absences from the NEGTC. Garm's been mentioned in this thread, at least.

Okay, now I know I'll be leaving someone off, but this is a just a list of ideas; I'm not making the thing now. So here's my reasonably-comprehensive list of people I'd like to see included. The last one was about 100 entries; because this really needs to be expanded to be viable as a new edition (the universe only keeps getting bigger), I'm giving about 150 ideas for entries, broken up by type/priority.

    1. Luke Skywalker
    2. Mara Jade Skywalker
    3. Ben Skywalker
    4. Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader
    5. Han Solo

    29. Asajj Ventress

    31. Thrawn
    32. Ulic Qel-Droma
    33. Exar Kun
    34. Nomi Sunrider (probably moves to must-include if this comes out after the Nomi novel)

    38. Ackbar

    48. Kyle Katarn
    49. Cal Omas
    50. Corran Horn
    51. A'Sharad Hett/Darth Krayt
    52. Roan Fel (possibly as a group with the other Imperial Knights ? Marasiah Fel, Antares Draco, Treis Sinde, Ganner Krieg, Azlyn Rae)
    53. Gar Stazi (these Legacy inclusions are a little difficult, as they revolve around characters John's still exploring where he's reluctant to establish a lot of backstory ahead of time, but they are really important characters)
    54. Tahiri Veila
    55. Alema Rar
    56. Quinlan Vos
    57. Lumiya
    58. Galen Marek

    70. Aayla Secura
    71. Vergere

Suggested inclusions (this is where my personal suggestions really come into play):

    76. Dexter Jettster

Like the idea of subtle canon drops like a previously unheard of Mandalore.
    I second this.

In terms of "new info that a [N]NEGTC could include", I'd kill for a sentence that simply said something along the lines of "After she left the Order, she changed her name so that people would no longer recognise her as the person responsible for the lives lost at Malachor when the Mass Shadow Generator was activated."

That way we get a canon name, and the "new identity" we chose to give her in the game.

The idea of putting the Lost Jedi together in a "group entry" is nice too. None of them really warrant individual articles, but it'd be nice to see them included, and (depending on what TOR does or does not plan to do) if it could give any post-KOTOR2 bits like "Mical became a Jedi Master on the reformed Jedi Council; Bastila became the Jedi Grand Master, etc. (Or whatever.)" that'd be awesome.

some of the Clone Wars novel characters could sure use pics...heck, some of them belong to species we've never even seen illustrated, like Zeetsa, X'Ting, Vippits, Equani, and Nediji. And some of them have slipped over into the Dark Times novels as well.

The inclusion of Pellaeon in your top 30 is the only one that suprised me. For me, Pellaeon would fit better in your second category.

Otherwise, I don't think i could of made a better list myself. Dan, I heartly recommend that you make a copy of Havac's list and file it somewhere. ;)

    *cough*Sareth Dorn*cough*

(Context: Before BioWare decided to give Bastila the name of the Cathar character who became Juhani -- I still don't know why, since "Bastila" screams Cathar at me -- she was to be Sareth Dorn.)

Still, anything would be better than using "the (Jedi) Exile" all the time.

    For obvious reasons...

Anyone insane-enough to lead an assault on the front-door of the Jedi Temple DESERVES their own entry.
    Just because.
