Lukes arc and to be given the impression that they actually wanted him in the film.

Reducing the number of sub-plots or plotlines... (most which unfortunately involved an attempt to give the character of Finn a greater depth). At least they all converged at the end, but the inclusion of Holdo, Rose, Maz, DJ, fathiers, stable boy, casino flight, police chase, infiltration of First Order, the show-down with Phasma (the list kinda goes on)... simply did not make the movie no better, just more complicated and at the same time diluted. This is Star Wars, not the James Bond-franchise with 25-something-movies that repeats themselves.

That said: Off to my second viewing Sunday...

After two viewings, the only thing I think is a mistake is the timeframe in which the film takes place. Take out the “18 hours of fuel remaining” ticking time bomb and simply have it that the resistance know they can’t jump to lightspeed without being caught, but make no mention of fuel until late in the film. This would give breathing space to the Canto Bight scene, and imply longer time spent on Acht-To, both of which would help the film IMO.

I loved the movie. Could have done without Leia. She is essentially a completely new character and much as I love Fisher for her off-screen personality I think the should have let Leia go earlier. I feel she was there more for the franchise than the movie.

What would have ruined the movie completely would have been Luke suddenly being some combined Obi-Wan/Yoda-character training Rey with force-platitudes. An awful idea that would have ruined the Luke legacy forever.

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. Time has always been a sketchy thing in these movies, but the mention of 18 hours struck me as too specific.

One thing? I guess the focus should have been on Reys Arc instead of a re-hashing of Luke's arc. Luke took over the movie with all his "I give up already" nonsense. Rey needed a mentor in this movie and didnt get it. What do I mean by re-hashing? Well, Luke gets the call to be a hero again and rejects it, again. Then he accepts the call, again only to overcome Kylos rage and die. It took all the focus and emotion from Reys story. I would have liked to she Rey get more training and Herculean trials from a mentor instead running off right to the Boss fight. Sometimes its wise to finish a side quest for gear before a Boss fight, right? Rey deserved more and Luke honestly, need to be less of a hindrance to her.

The biggest thing I can think of is her being a Solo or Skywalker; while I think it would have ruined the characterization of Rey completely, especially after "The Force Awakens" but it would've completely been fan service, self-serving and ruined not only Rey's character arc but also Luke Skywalker, Ben Solo; we would lost all the drama and challenges Rey had to overcome and she would of just been used as a plot device and not as a character. But I know others disagree. I've very happy she's a random.
