This Is What I've Been Doing

Yeah, I've been kind of in a lull for thinking of new threads, so I decided to flex some creative muscle.

That's what I've been working on for most of the night. Enjoy.

 

Looks pretty cool, although some of the text is a little hard to read.

How did you make the background?

 

At first I was thinking of this image, I made a completely blue copy of this image as well which worked out nicely to dull the brightness of it using hue/saturation:

And after a few other test images I settled on this rust texture that I found:

Which I put on 'vivid light'.

Then I wanted some color and used this paint swirl thingy that I've had for a while:

I put that on 'soft light' and then used the dodge tool to take out the pixely bits on the lower right.

And for some added texture I used this piece of rusted...whatever it is.

Which I also put on 'soft light'.


Also, I do everything at 300 resolution which is the bare minimum for print-worthy work. Soo...if you want the high resolution images let me know.

 

Do you use photoshop?

I like working with it, but I'm just no good using it.

 

Yep, I do. I majored in Publication Design. Which means if it's peinted I make it.

I also use Illustrator and InDesign. Not so much InDesign these days, though, because I haven't done a magazine spread in a while.

I can give you some pdf's that can help you with Photoshop if you're interested.

I'm pretty much an epic fail. If it's some kind of advanced, i can't do it. Once I tried to have a background fade into black. Do you think reading a manual would help? I am reluctant to get one, money and all that.

 

It might, but there's so much good info out there you'd be wasting money.

I have a rather old photoshop, like 6.0.

 

Actually I do. And the stuff I create now is done with brushes, layer masks, and blending options. So, you should be able to do all of that. Give me a bit and I'll get on my comp.

Layering is driving me nuts, but I'm getting the hang of it. I guess.
Blending - no clue about that.

Oh, no hurry, I'll be off to have some coffee now anyway.

Just tidying up some scanning errors and other blemishes. The original is the size of a poster and the source image is about 10,000px and 190mb in size, so it's taking a while.

 

I looked at the map and though 'hey, looks like New Zealand'. Then saw the title on it.

It looks great.

 

Okay, so, I've got some tutorials from my professor to his Digital Imaging II class. He explains these things fairly well and I'm pretty sure that you can do them on Photoshop 6. Well, except the last one. Not sure when the patching tool came into existence for Photoshop.

Your piece looks good. Sorry they won't open up for you. I'll figure something out to slice them up for ya and turn the pages into jpg's and email them to you if you're interested.

 

Not much you can see from that resolution, but close up you can see some scan lines where they scanned it in several parts, pencil lines and other little ink mistakes.

They all show up when you see it poster size.
