Reeve and Routh were in two different points of Superman's life, which is why their portrayals are different. Reeve was Superman who had not faced inner darkness. Reeve was a Superman who had not been lead to believe his world was alive, only to go back and find it wasn't so. Nor to come back and find that while the basics of the world have not changed, the lives of those closest to him have. Superman as a character goes through these emotional beats. From time to time he will be depressed about his lot in life, about his being the last of his kind. About the state of the world and how his personal life is. Every so often he will broad and carry the weight of the world on his shoulders.

IESB update on "The Man Of Steel"

Ok, here's the big news, Robert has informed me that he has confirmed that yes, Bryan Singer is 100% on the sequel to his 2006 revamp Superman Returns. He has since confirmed this with studio sources so take this one to the bank.

But, with Superman Returns writers Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris out, who will be penning the film?

Word is Transformers/Star Trek scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are considering being behind the project. This gives Superman fans hope after Returns' mild disappointment amongst fan boys. The pair are apparently in talks and have had "several meetings" regarding the film. No need to worry about a lack of action from these two!

Meanwhile, Singer speaks to EmpireOnline about the next film.

"The first one was a romantic film and a nostalgic film," he says. "I'll be the first person to own up to that without making any apologies for it. I knew it was going to be that from the outset. And now that the characters are established, there's really an opportunity to up the threat levels...Clearly there'll be a body count [laughs]. From frame one, it will be unrelenting terror! All those teenage girls who found the movie and mooned over James Marsden or Brandon? Well, I'm going to wake them up!" He may be joking about the unrelenting terror.

Singer wanted Jude law as General Zod. Maybe he will get that this time.

I suppose thats all good news the script for Transformers wasn't perfect but it was a heck of a lot more entertaining then Superman Returns and hopefully Singers telling the truth when he says hes learnt from his mistakes.

As someone who believes that SR got the tone, look, feel and essence of Superman 92% correct, with 8% too much pining and pussyfooting around, I for one am glad to hear that Singer and Routh will return with new screenwriters for the sequel.

More than likely we'll get Brainiac. Anyway, there's a conflict of reports stating that Orci and Kurtzman are not on board. Though there may be time to do both.

I'm just happy the project is still going forward. Something to look forward to, no doubt.

In reading a bit about this Synger states that there will be two villains and one of them is an alien. Of course, the alien could be Brainiac or Zod. Also, the piece of Kryptonian real estate now floating off in space will be a major part of the sequel as well.
That makes me wonder if perhaps something is born from the land mass that Luthor "programmed" in.

You mean like you he used a strand of Superman's hair to create a kind of anti-Superman in Superman IV?

    Lol, no.

Well, sorta. The whole land mass was born of some advanced nanotech(possibly picotech) and the idea of growing some version of Brainiac out of it is within reason. But it does sound kinda cheesy if done that way.

Lex is definately one of the villains. As to New Krypton, at best I think it'd be a potential source of Kryptonite to use against Clark in the future. As to Brainiac himself, it depends on which version is used. If they go with the traditional Brainiac, he's from the computer masters of Colu and seeks out various cities with which he shrinks down and stores inside a bottle. He comes to Earth to do that with Metropolis just as he did with Kandor on Krypton years ago. Another version is that he is a criminal who was about to be executed and manages to transfer his consciousness to Earth where he takes control over a human named Milton Fine and eventually converts his body into a sembelence of his Colu form. The other is the DCAU and "Smallville" version. A computer program created on Krypton which managed to flee there before its destruction and come to Earth, seeking to destroy the last son of Krypton.

John Williams set for Superman: Man of Steel?

Williams, now 76, was conductor of the Pops from 1980 to 1993. According to industry reports, he remains a busy man, with soundtracks for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," "Jurassic Park IV," and "Superman: Man of Steel" all scheduled for his touch.

I agree, it would be great to have Williams return to the series.

    Bump!

So, buncha developments since this thread was last used- we now know it will be a reboot to the series, prdocued by Christopher Nolan, directed by Zack Snyder and it probably won't be using Williams' themes (the fools!!!).

Also, Henry Cavill, of The Tudors fame, has been cast to play the new Superman/Kent. He was previously up for the role back when McG was going to direct the last movie, before Bryan Singer was brought on board (who then went with Routh), as well as up for the role of Bruce Wayne for Batman Begins (but lost to Bale).

I hope they stick with the Man of Steel title. And draw heavily from both Byrne's Man of Steel and from Birthright. Johns' Secret Origin is great, probably definitive in so many ways, but I can't seperate that from Christopher Reeve because of the art... and I honestly think the #1 thing that a new Superman film franchise needs is to make a clean break with the Reeve movies and all the bad and good that came with them. I think Superman the Animated Series shows you can come up with an epic Superman theme song separate from John Williams' awesome work on the Reeve movies.

Zimmer's scores for the Nolan Bat-films is great. That, of course, doesn't change for me that Elfman's theme defines Batman for me. I was 10 when Batman came out... that will be the Batman song for me as much as the song from the '66 series is the Batman song for Boomers.

I agree, for Superman to succeed they have to move on past the Reeve films. Superman needs this to be a Batman Begins type movie. One that reinvents the character by being true to his character.

And Superman TAS shows that you can do an AWESOME Brainiac. It doesn't need to be Luthor, Zod, all the time.

Do we REALLY need yet another origin story?

I think the general movie going public understands by now the backstory of the character.

    Time to move on.

I was under the impression that Man of Steel would already assume that everyone knew the origin and would start well into Superman's career.
