You're not French-Canadian, but you should understand what "surrender" means. - dp4m

As a proud French-Canadian (Acadien, to be exact) I find this comment to be thoughtless, insulting and degrading in referring to French-Canadians in a negative way.

EDIT: It was made in this thread towards AT60.

EDIT 2: Changed the title so we can get this discussion back on track

Kadue Edit: Unlocked and locked to put up what was being written up before the thread was locked.

I am not French Canadian, but I live close to French Canada, and so I spend a great deal of time talking to French Canadians. I also know of several on this board. I agree with wk. This is a very degrading comment. Moreover, moderators are supposed to be setting a good example.

Ignant, we should make sure they understand what "surrender" means, first, before suggesting it to them as an option...

Not to belittle your point, which I think is valid, but is French-Canadian a race? If not, what is it considered? So, maybe instead of a racist comment, it would be called an anti-societist comment?

Waaaaaahhhh! Some people keep a chip on their shoulders. Take a breather.

And if you'd kept your word and stayed out of the JCC as your sig says, this wouldn't have happened, eh? At least have the decency to change it.

    AYBABTU?

I think people need to calm down. If you try hard enough, you can get worked up over anything. I think that that comment was meant more as a historical joke. I suppose I can see where you could get offended, but I don't think it's going to help anything. If you had a problem with the comment, why didn't you PM dp4m or something, letting him know that you were offended, or give him the chance to explain?

This happened to me once. I said something that offended someone and I didn't mean to, so with a simple PM notifying me of that, I edited it out. or I could have explained that it was just mean to be humorous, if I didn't feel it was necessary to edit out.

EDIT: I am being incoherent and can't type :p

It may not technically be racist, but that doesn't make it any better. It's still discrimination. Discrimination based on colour and ethnic background are no different.

French isn't an ethnicity either. Crap like this dulls the impact of legitimate racism and ethnic hatred.

Yeah, Hawk's a dirty aussie, and therefore is incapable of setting a good example. Wait, as self-proclaimed Queen of the JC, do I have to set a good example too?

OK, perhaps "racist" isn't the technical word for it. It still does not negate the fact that dp4m made an offensive comment. And a lot of the replies in this thread are just as offensive.

    ie -

blah blah blah, just surrender the point and be done with it - Darth_Ignant

Ignant, we should make sure they understand what "surrender" means, first, before suggesting it to them as an option... - EmpressPalpatine

They have had enough practice, I would think they know. - Darth_Ignant

    Also:

I think that that comment was meant more as a historical joke. - droideka27

So, if I made a "historical joke" about, say, a black man serving a white man at McDonalds and tie it in to slavery, would that be ok? [face_plain]

I agree that this thread is an over reaction, wild_karrde.

I'm also disappointed to see the sarcasm being thrown around in here, especially directed at AT60.

And you wonder why people avoid Coms [face_plain]

even though i'm of Acadien( Acadian to be exactt)
descent, i laughed when i read that quote. i'm horrible, sorry. I know that though i'm of french descent, the ties aren't that close, and the french are being mocked because of their present stance against actions on Iraq which i don't agree with anyways.

like it or not, some people, mod and non-mods are going to let fly comments in this tumultous time, and alot of them will hurt. be thankful it's not a bomb falling on your head instead.

Yeah I mean how do you justify the view Mods are supposed to set a good example with the fact there are aussies mods? And even a few kiwis!

And I would commend dp4m's complimenting on the bilingual nature of French-Canadians.
