I don't know how that applies to the uniforms, which was our actual discussion topic.

That was a big appeal of the Empire. The Republic was bright and rich. The Imps kept it simple. It was a working man's empire (in looks but not so much in laws.)

Yes, and I don't see Thrawn in the films either -- guess he can't exist?

I'd really not call the Empire a "working man's" anything, anyway. It was sleek and clean, spit and polish. And besides, when we see on ROTJ what the true rulers of the Empire look like -- people with glorious hats and elegant shuttles -- we learn that the Imperial military just serves at their pleasure.

Are those even actual epaulettes? Aren't they more like attentes, technically?

Oh, they're definitely not epaulettes in the canon uniform. My thinking was that they were intended to recall the epaulettes without being them. It's a good thought to compare them to attentes (or shoulder straps, as we call them in the US) -- I don't know if that was the intention (and they're a little thicker) but they're the closest analogue. And it's essentially their purpose in real life too, to recall epaulettes without actually being then.

Speaking of Grand Admiral regalia, it looks like the upcoming Hasbro action figure has the rank plaque wrong:

They're already aware, and mentioned the error on the SDCC prototype. It'll be fixed on the final version.

I feel great relief when I see that quoted correctly. Star Wars Twitter keeps saying "artfully."

I'd call them boy-toys rather than rulers. Palpatine only makes them think they're important.

I like the idea that Palpatine mind-tricks them into telling him what he's already thinking, hence the perception that Palpatine is "controlled by bootlickers."

It's possible. Yupe Tashu in the Aftermath books didn't seem like an independent thinker. Whether or not Palpatine mind-controlled them, they didn't seem to have much real power.

In Tarkin the rulership of the Empire consists of Palpatine, Vader and Tarkin.

Because he was doing his best Disney's Snow White's hag impression. I imagine he had a mirror, before ROTS, where he would ask, "Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who's the most powerful Sith of them all?" :p
