In the video game advert in AOTC, where Padme and Anakin have fun and games in the droid factory, there's a bit where Threepio's head gets knocked off, and the automated assembly line AMUSINGLY puts it on a droid's body.

    Has anyone ever wondered...

    a) How his head keeps talking, minus a body?

    b) How his body keeps walking, without a head (less difficult to justify)

I only ask, as Chewie had to reassemble Threepio in TESB, and the camp droid's head didn't have a life of its own THEN, did it?

(and as an additional side note - R2 flying? That might have been pretty useful later on!)

This is just another example of Lucas changing things in order to have some comedic relief. Unless 3PO has an extra power source in his head, his head would have quit being active the moment it got knocked off. His body, I'm not sure of. It could have kept fuctioning or maybe Anakin made him with an emergency shutoff system that activates when ever a part gets knocked off.

    It doesn't change anything.
He wasn't working in TESB because he was shot. The blaster bolt probably stunned him and he was in need of repair.

The head must contain the vocal controls.
The body must control the movement controls.

    Not too hard to explain.

If you look at the 3POs head closely enough in AOTC, then you'll see there is a "cube" coming from the bottom of his head -- this wasn't present when 3POs head came off in ESB, instead it was left inside his "neck" -- this device was what 3PO needed to be able to communicate, that's why when he doesn't have it in ESB, he cannot talk. Simple :)

...or it's just an excuse for a bit of comic relief.
