This is a story orginally posted by my sister, JediGabrielle. I decided to keep it going.

Anyway, here it is!

For a moment, the expanse of deep space was only distant stars and drifts of dust. The void was empty of other matter, and everything was quiet.

In the next moment, streaks of light stabbed viciously through the vacuum, stretching backward into another time, before reorganizing into the easily recognizable shaped of starships. The Fortitude, an Imperial-Class Star Destroyer, glided along the shimmers of miniscule debris, flanked by two Carrack-Class light cruisers. They moved quickly, sublight engines pushing the angular crafts through a sea of nothingness.

Seconds later, the ships again accelerated into a stretched from before disappearing altogether. Another routine hyperspace jump had been completed, rendering the three ships closer and closer to their eventual destination. No one on board expected anything different; it had all be done before.

Deep inside the narrow confines of the Fortitude, however, sat a teenage girl, oblivious to the ship's movement altogether. Straight, unrefined blonde hair hung down to the shoulders of her lithe, jumpsuit-covered body. Two tightly shut eyes stood out among pale white skin in deep, desperate concentration.

Jysella Horn reopened her mind to the Force.

She released all emotions from her tightly-strung mind. She let those strings of stress and nervousness slack into a comfortable pattern, before letting the river of life that was the Force rush into her mind, enveloping her mind, finding all the cracks and crevices of though and filling them. Nothing of conscious thought remained, and there was only her and the awesome power of the Force.

None of it happened, though. Jysella threw herself backwards onto the bed in frustration. Why wouldn't it work? She had never had any more trouble meditating at the Academy, so she shouldn't have had trouble on the Fortitude. But nevertheless, it didn't work.

Her affliction had continued for the two days of the small convoy's journey. Growing tenser each day, Jysella was ready to fall apart. How could she survive a major furball in this condition? She continually asked herself this question, although she knew the answer. I won't. I'll die out there, and Commander Gavin's going to dismiss it as another causality¡K It was with this mindset in which she tried to meditate. She tried to recite the facts in her head, as if they were perfectly normal. The Fortitude is carrying much-needed gravity weapons to refit the fleet at Bastion, she told herself. Due to the important nature of this mission, Rogue squadron has been ordered to escort the convoy. I am a member of Rogue squadron. That is why I'm here.

She shivered, partly due to the electric chill of the cabin, partly due to homesickness. Even though she had traveled vast distances away from her parents before, being on a starship heading into combat made it a lot more realizing, which she had failed to notice before.

She rolled on her side and grabbed her helmet, before rolling back on her bed, her hands still holding the headgear above her head. Her eyes gazed at the undamaged headgear.

A Rogue. I'm a Rogue.

She wondered what that meant to her, and what it meant to her father. Why had he risked his life so many times? The adrenaline high that came with starfighter combat? The smug knowledge that he was the best of the best? Or did he truly believe in the ideals of the New Republic?

There was a knock at the door. Jysella forced herself up. She had also failed to notice how tired it was, and it took a lot of strength just to stand up off the bed.

"Horn? Ah, this is Gavin. The rest of the Rogues are at the sims, but I thought I'd come and have a word with you"

Her mind instantly snapped to attention and commenced to beat her memory to a pulp. No! I was supposed to be there an hour ago! She hesitated, wondering whether or not she should feign illness.

The knocking continued. "Horn

"I knew that feeling a long time ago. Of course, at my age, you forget things, as I have forgotten how it feels exactly. But I know that's something you're going to have to solve yourself. I can't help you."

"Why not?"

"From experience." He gave a smile. "All the pilots that have come through me have had found ways to help themselves-and someone of you father's blood isn't going to do any worse.

At mention of her father, Jysella looked up at Gavin. "How was he to you? I mean, when you first met him, ah-"

Gavin's eyes seemed to gaze through her, his mind trying to bring back the memory of his first missions with the Rogues, and among them Corran Horn. "Your father-he was kind. I remember when I was the greenest pilot with the squad...got made fun of constantly."

Jysella's mind flipped over several times, trying to imagine Gavin as a young rookie. It failed.

"One day, this guy, forget his name now...he was joking about me, and your father made a contest between the pilot and himself. He said if I scored more kills than the other pilot did, then he would have to acknowledge my superiority. If he won, I got booted off the squadron."

Jysella sucked in her breath. "That's an unfair deal."

"Yeah, but your father knew I would win in some way. Which I turned out not to, but I eventually got...I don't know, good."

"I guess." An awkward silence followed. Then Jysella spoke.

I'll come to the sims now, if it's okay. I do need some practice with the squadron."

Gavin pushed her out of her room. "By the way, Horn, you've got cleaning and maintenance duty for the rest of our mission.

Jysella gritted her teeth. "Yes, sir."

------------------------------------------------------------

By the time she had gotten to the simulator room, it was deserted. Sighing, she decided she would get some practice done, even if everyone else was gone. She climbed into a cockpit and started up the processor. The metal holoprojector-laden slammed shut, giving her a slight jolt.

A selector screen appeared inches from her face. Adjusting it to a more comfortable distance, she selected a 10 versus 1 melee battle with coralskippers. Deciding she was going to be here for a long time, she also set the time limit to 30 minutes. After refitting her X-Wing and setting the AI to "Yuuzhan Vong," she started the game. A countdown started. When it was at 2 seconds, she took a deep breathe and let it out. It was time to kill.

The countdown finished, and suddenly, she was plunged into space. Ten coralskippers were in a formation that resembled a claw; a single craft in the rear center with the others spreading out forwards Jysella and her puny X-wing.

She grinned, and began firing.

The XJ7-2 X-wings given to Rogue squadron were among the best in the New-Republic arsenal. First, maneuverability had been stressed in a new S-foil design. The wings now slightly tapered forwards, giving the fighter a backwards shape. The engines had been refitted, now carrying Nero-Saav L35 directional thrusters in addition to the regular Pratt and Whitney. This had the advantage of making the fighter 2 times more maneuverable than it originally was. Also refitted was the lasers. In addition to the standard cannons, large gravitational amplifiers had been added to the wingtip arsenals. This was one of the major breakthroughs of the war. Protons of plasma had no mass. However, they could be polarized and ionized in a way that it drew matter to itself, crushed that matter, and created its own black hole. Since lasers on New Republic vessels fired plasma, the same principle could be applied the ships¡¥ weaponry. This way, the effects of coralskipper dovin basals were negated. This was an amazing breakthrough in fighting the Yuuzhan Vong. Although the systems had malfunctioned constantly in experimentation, the New Republic Military Research Division had felt them reliable enough to refit starfighters with. Rogue squadron was among the first to apply for the new refit, but Gavin had made sure the s

Cool, this is awsome. I love the Rouges and especially the Horn family. How old is Jysella in this? Also, could you remove some of those random symbols, they make it a bit confusing. Otherwise, keep it up. Thanks.

The coralskippers regrouped into their formation, loosing all effect her first volley of lasers had. Shifting all of her shields to the front, she began firing yet again. She was soon met by return fire, plasma starting to track across her shields. She pulled up slightly, and then dived below plane of the oncoming coralskippers. Momentarily pausing to aim, the coralskippers began to spread.

Quickly, she pumped all power to engines as she shot past the rearmost skip. She lowered her speed back to 2/3 throttle before turning the tail of a coralskipper. She had to hurry, or else the others would be on her own six. Tracking lasers across the enemy skip, she immediately accelerated onto the next closest coralskipper. It started jinking, and veered to the left and behind, out of Jysella's view. No matter. A half-klick to the left was another skip, and she locked a concussion missile onto it. It too kept on trying to break the lock, but Jysella's dexterous stick hand managed to keep the target pipper on the tail of the coralskipper. She launched and pulled back on the stick, firing a few well-placed laser streams as she went. She pitched the X-wing just in time to see plasma flaring past her, followed by two coralskippers streaking past. Jysella assigned the virtual R2 unit to designate the units as A 1.1 and A 1.2. Rolling onto 1.2's general plane, she fired. When she missed, she aimed again and nailed the skip on the cockpit. The coralskipper fragmented from the puncture. She had no time to waste, instantly turning into 1.1's wake. A couple of shots were enough to melt the yorik coral through, as the other coralskipper broke into pieces as well.

5 down, more to go...

The remaining half of the Yuuzhan Vong assembled into two echelons, one descending on her position, the other ascending toward the same position. A wild though struck her, and since it was just a simulation, she decided to try it. Time to show that Correlian ingenuity.
Jysella waited for the ships to start firing. Getting impatient, she decided to make up their minds for themselves. She angled her craft directly toward the skips, and fired her remaining missiles randomly in the direction of the starfighters. It spurred the reaction she had wanted. The above echelon pursued Jysella and fired as well, aware of the fire coming below. The computer had effectively trapped her. The skips¡¦ fire arc was too wide for her to escape using pure speed. Jysella reasoned that if the computer could speak, it'd be laughing right then.

And finally, she detonated the X-Wing.

The screen faded again to a dull black. Red letters ran across her eyes again: SELF-DESTRUCTED-PILOT IN EVA...RESPAWNING IN 5...4...3...2...1...

As she came into the field, the coralskippers were trying to change their vectors, albeit too late. Plasma was now hurtling towards the opposite echoelon, and the friendly fire hit. Soon, all but one were gone, pieces of yorik floating in the vacumn. Jysella's score showed 2000, 300 for every fighter destroyed, -500 everytime she had been destroyed. She grinned. She hadn't lost her touch completely, after all. New words flashed across the screen: 10 CRSKP RESPAWNING AT 6 KILOMETERS.

A moment later, another line of text appeared. 1 X-WING GREEN TWO SPAWING AT 6 KILOMETERS. Jysella winced. It was a newbie, from the lack of any kill paintings on the X-Wing's fuselage, but it was help, nevertheless. "Two," she called into the comm, taking command, "Come and stay on my wing."

The other craft refused to acknoledge Jysella's hail, and started firing at the coralskippers near its spawn point. What is that guy thinking? Is he nuts? And to Jysella's amazement, he or she was using normal lasers! The pilot was doing it the old-fashioned way!

"Two. I said, get here, now." The other X-Wing just kept on wrecking havoc among the coralskippers. Whoever he or she was, they were really good. Finding ways to elude the constant fire and weaving in and around their formation, the other pilot seeme

Sorry about delay. Was busy...keep guessing, Rose!

Whoever it was, they needed help. No one could expect to take on 10 skips and survive. Grumbling something about crazed newbs, Jysella flew into the fight.

The other X-Wing was uncannily undamaged. 4 of the 6 coralskippers had been vanquished, contrary to the overwhelming odds.

"Two, I've got your back." Internally, Jysella knew that the pilot probably didn't need the help.

Coralskippers about .6 klicks away began turning towards them.

In concordance with her thoughts, the pilot shrugged off the offer, purposely climbing a plane and executing a S-spilt reverse, swooping past Jysella and engaging something beyond her view.

Someone was tailing me? She made her own S-Turn, and sure enough, three more coralskippers were avoiding the withering hail of lasers coming from the other X-Wing. Making shots converging at slightly different angles, the other pilot managed to destroy one. Jysella turned on the other one, and started firing her own grav-lasers. It jinked upwards, and she followed, keeping her reticule dead on target.

Two coralskippers shattered.

The rest of the enemy group had arrived, and fire was everywhere. Managing to keep her concentration on the two skips now following her, she led them though a slow left turn, braking as she went. Staying out of their views, she bought her X-Wing closer. At .1 klicks, Jysella pulled slightly on the flaps.

Her X-Wing slowed enough to put her behind them. Frantically, it seemed, the computer flew them wildly apart, one going up, and the other doing the opposite. But it had not done so before Jysella fired missiles at both.

Only one had been locked. The other she fired as a 5,000 credit diversion. Trying to stay out of the untargeted missile's 45 degree "view," it pulled back parallel to Jysella¡¦s craft, heading in the opposite direction. It was directly underneath the fuselage of the X-Wing, leaving it in the perfect position for another S-spilt. Another virtual red silhouette coralskipper was "painted" on Jysella's craft. She wondered if the newbie was doing as good.

She looked over, and realized that there were no remaining coralskippers. That's no newbie. The other pilot wagged his wings, a generic encouragement. At least they were friendly, but they were beginning to irritate Jysella¡K

10 CRSKP RESPAWNING AT 6 KILOMETERS.

The coralskippers never came. It was probably another bug, meaning the simulation was done for. Too short, Jysella mused angrily. She reached over to exit the battle when a sound came over the comm.

"Blast...comm...system...owww! Er...hey! Can anybody hear me? One? Whoever you are? Anyone?"

"Calm down! I can hear you. Who are you?"

"Oh. Hey, my name is Aden. I'm kinda new, sorr-"

Jysella did not give the pilot a chance to respond. "I don't want any apologies yet. Why didn't you listen to me when I hailed you?"

Aden's voice took on a frank tone. "I would have died back there if I had tried to escape."

"Shunt your power to engines, then! Have you ever thought of something as simple as that?"

"Yes, but then I would need to recharge my lasers, and that wouldn't help me much..."

"It doesn't matter."

"Well, sure it does! I don't think I could have survived if they ran out halfway through the sim, right?" Aden laughed.

In face of this simple logic, Jysella resigned. "Fine, you win. Out of curiosity, what-"

I'm with the Rogues."

"How did you-" Jysella did not get very far before she was interrupted again.

"You probably were going to ask that. How about you?"

"Same." Jysella mentally groaned. Seeing him in person would worsen the humiliation she felt right then.

"Wow. I actually fought alongside a Rogue.."

"I guess." Well, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. He seemed to be nice enough.

"So how's-"

"It's good." It was her turn to interrupt. "Gavin's not too harsh. Trust, me, with your skills, you'll do fine. Anyway, I have to go. See you." She logged o

Sorry this one is short as well. I didn't have time during the week.

The walk to the mess hall was fortunately a very short distance from her quarters. She was tired enough as is-she had not slept in days. The sterile gray hallways started to swirl around her, and she knocked her head against a side of the corridor out of fatigue. Regaining her balance, she too another sip of her caf. The reassuring feel of caffeine in her veins kept her going until she reached the turbolift down. Bumping into someone, she mumbled a groggy "excuse me", pushed a panel on the display console, and leaned back against the circular turbolift wall as it began to descend.

"Someone?s a little too tired today." the voice laughed. "Sorry. Couldn?t resist. I'm new, name's-"

Jysella uttered a quiet gasp as the voice registered in her head. She looked up and saw a tall boy with dark blond hair and matching eyes looking upon her with amusement.

"You!" she stumbled.

"You...uh...are who?" The boy looked confused, as he was.

Jysella extended a hand. "I'm Jysella. I think we already met." He still seemed puzzled. "In the sims," she coaxed.

Surprise was evident on his face. "Oh' you!" He sounded unsure of what to do next. Taking Jysella?s hand, he shook it. "Hi."

The turbolift door opened and he dashed out.

What a strange guy...

Post more laters!

Sorry for the pause! Schoolwork.

It took a moment for Jysella to realize that Aden had also been heading to the mess hall. He must have gotten lost. On a ship the size of the Valiant, that would be near fatal. She made a note to tell Gavin to page him.

She heaved open the double doors of the cafeteria, and walked into the large barren room. It had been of an Imperial design, emphasizing practicality over anything else. It meant that the mess hall was all in all incredibly dull, although the various personnel who had eaten there had done their best to decorate it. Someone had decided to spray black paint on one of the walls, giving the illusion that something had exploded there. But nothing anyone did could take away the drab quality of the area.

The same could not be said about its occupants. Jysella could see a food fight in one corner, and a spilled caf tank over to her right. She could barely think over the voices, and found it hard to distinguish the welcoming shout of Hefd to the Rogues? table. But she eventually did, and sat down after ordering a round slice of bread.

"Jysella, eat more. You?re becoming anorexic." Nenan, the ever-solicitous Calamari smiled as Jysella sat. "You can?t fight on an empty stomach."

"I would, actually, but I?m just not hungry," Jysella replied apologetically.

"Suit yourself."

Jysella's bread didn?t get all the way to her mouth before she was asked another question. "Hey Jys," interrogated Hefd, ?Who was that new guy you were talking to??

"Hah? Wh-what guy?"

"You know what I was talking about. On the lift. I activated the old monitoring system, and-"

"You didn't." The monitoring system had been deactivated once the Republic had been given the ship. It had been used to monitor the movements of the personnel throughout the ship, to watch for dissidents or suspicious behavior.

Hefd grinned. "Of course I did! So tell me." The Devonarian leaned closer. "Who?s the lucky guy?" Conversation stopped around the table, as a couple of eyes turned toward the usually shy Corellian girl.

Asla, a Twi'lek, punched Hefd playfully on the shoulder. "Oh great, you?ve got everybody interested in her love life. Please, Hefd. This is a war, not a soap opera."

Jysella rolled her eyes. "You people, stop. He?s coming to the Rogues. His name?s Aden."

"Oooooh. Now we're getting somewhere." It was obvious that Hefd was enjoying himself.

"Okay! That?s it!" Nenan threw a fruit at Hefd. "Stop it, you're embarrassing her!"

"Nenan, please don?t start that again. Tam?uk nearly took someone?s head off with that bone he threw last food fight."

All the Rogues turned to the new speaker, Gavin. Hefd tried to look dignified with a yellow splatter on his face. He snapped to attention. "Sir." he saluted. "It was her fault." He pointed to Nenan.

"Don?t worry, I saw it. Nenan, you're-"

"Me?" Nenan exclaimed. "I was defending Jys!"

"Stop it, you two. I have something more important to do. Meet Aden, Rouges." Aden shuffled out from behind Gavin. He stared pointedly at the floor. Hefd nudged Jysella and winked. Jysella looked away.

"Um hey, everybody," Aden said timidly.

Gavin continued. "Aden is the newest addition to Rogue squadron. He?ll be in the sims with us from now on, and I want you all to know him real well. That's all, bye." His short speech left Aden uneasy, but the Rogues were quick to welcome. Thedar beckoned him to a seat next to Tam?uk.

"Here! Next to the Wookie!" Aden obligingly sat down.

Sorry, I was gone yet again. School is scary.

Oh, and sorry for the bad writing in this one...I know it sucks, but I'll try my best.

?So what squadron were you transferred from?" asked Thedar, once Aden was seated.

"I'm from Omicron." The name elicited a puzzled look around the table.

"Omicron," repeated Nenan. "I don't recognize it-"

"Oh, sorry. The name is new. The techs dicovered a flight of Skiprays in one of the ghost hangars, and squadron 'Omicron' was programmed in their flight computers. The techies were too lazy to break the encryption, so we were stuck with the name," answered Aden. There were several more moment of silence as people pondered whether or not to ask more questions.

Hefd spoke up. "Is it true that you and J-"

Nenan whacked him on the back of his horn before any more words came out of his mouth. The temporary sobriety of the Rouges' table dissapeared, and a multitude of voices erupted again.

----------------------

"Seven, Nine, I'm taking lead."

"Roger, Eight," responded Jysella. She had "coincidentally" inherited her father's call number, Rogue Nine. This had made Corran all the more proud of his daughter. Having a old friend of your father as your commader changed a lot of things. Nenan, Rogue Seven, clicked her transit button in agreement.

The three-craft triangle split and rearragned so that Thedar, Rogue Eight, flew up front. "Okay guys, we're taking the high road." He transferred energy away from his shields and to his engines. Jysella and Nenan followed suit.

"Okay, quiet everybody." Gavin's voice silenced the squad channel. "Keep in a close combat air patrol formation. We're protecting the Valiant through this particular jump, but you guys already know that. Keep close to the ship. All group leaders, take your triplets to their respective locations." Individual X-Wings vectored in groups of three to the top, sides, and to the bottom of the Star Destroyer. Hyperspace data was transmitted to each pilot's astromech droid. Through a millisecond translation of data into three dimensions, the droids calculated where the jump point would be in real space and displayed it as a hyperspace becaon on each craft's sensors.

Jysella's R9, Kegareth, also relayed this data. It commented in the process that Jysella's chair showed her body temperature unusually high. "It's fine, Keg. It's just a fever."

Keg whistled apprehensively. "I'm okay!" She couldn't help but smile at her droid's protectiveness. "You just worry about keeping this flying hydrospanner from blowing apart during the jump." The droid shrilled in fear, then calmed down as the system diagnosis showed no malfunctions and it determined Jysella's comment was a joke.

Rolling her eyes, Jysella concentrated on staying behind Thedar, managing to keep exactly 2 meters behind his X-Wing. Nenan was doing just as well, their wingtips almost touching while turning to avoid the multiple outcroppings of the turbolasers on the side of the massive capital ship. "Okay, matching speeds now, ladies." commented Thedar.

The trio slowed to the Star Destroyer's cruise, preparing to jump at the same time the Fortitude would.
