A little clip of material that I found the internet...

Here's a bit of info from industry sources that's likely to get the undies of some fans all in a bunch. Word is that George Lucas' THX-1138, which is currently being prepared for DVD release later in 2004 by Lucasfilm and Warner Bros, is going to feature more than 100 new visual effects shots. Look for digitally-enhanced skylines and other additions and alterations.

    The full story is here.

Seems we will be getting a THX 1138:Special Edition...

Also, Digital bits did a chat with Warner Bros. the other day. Apparently, The Star Wars Trilogy and THX will probably come out around the same time, maybe the same day. And it's going to be a 2-Disc Director's Cut. Can't wait for that.

And about the enhancements, I'm not against. I'm kind of curious to see what he's planning. Either way, we get some great Lucasfilm DVD's very soon.

Sadly, I still haven't seen THX 1138. I guess I'll have to pick up this DVD.

Is THX a good film? I have sadly never seen it (its not at my video rental store.) I would get the DVD if I knew it was a good film. Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Well Hansen you said you have never seen the film.
so saying it is great does not mean very much.

Has anyone who has seen the film, like the film?

There is plenty of discussion on whether THX-1138 is "good", and even discussion on THX special Editions.

Just use the handy forum index to find the discussion!

For discussion on if the flick is good you might like going here. BEHOLD

I think this thread itself might serve as a place to discuss actual concrete info on DVD special editions that are kicking around these Web sites as R2D35 posted.

THX 1138 is a good film. It has a Kubrick feel to it.
As far as I know there is not a DVD in the US, or a recent production of DVDs. You maybe able to find a copy on VHS at Movie trading Company for cheap.
Other wise I have a copy if anybody wants it.

I've seen the film and I like it. I try to catch it whenever I can.

I've heard this was John Berton's last project at ILM.

It has a Kubrick feel to it.

that's true, it's kind of icey and cerebral,
but it's still brilliant for a 25 year old filmmaker.
Can't wait to see the one with the new efx, too. :)

I just about fell out of my chair laughing at this!
Has the person who said this EVER SEEN this movie???

    A digitally-enhanced SKYLINE?

The entire film takes place in an UNDERGROUND CITY!!!!

There's only one shot above ground in the entire film, the last one, and it's a shot of the SUN.

I've never seen the film and have kind of a dumb question....is it pronounced one-one-three-eight or eleven-thirty-eight? I've always wondered.........

I have it on video.. I like it, but its not a movie I regularly watch. It is slow and boring in some spots. I think I even fell asleep once! But its worth seeing.. I like the way it was shot and the effects, I dont see why Lucas feels the need to change everything. Its fine the way it is.

I doubt any of the changes will be major. Probably no more than what was done on the Indy DVDs.

THX-1138 is a great film, and not just because it's George Lucas' first movie. It is a very Orwellian/1984-like setting, and even though it's obviously low-budget, Lucas makes the most of what he has - I found it very realistic, even though it was a sci-fi movie.

I hope there are no enhancements to the film for the DVD release - it's fine the way it is. I just hope it's in the widescreen/letterbox format, since I have only seen the VHS fullscreen format.

The digitally-enhanced skylines bit makes me think that this is just somebody having a laugh. There isn't much in THX to give an SE treatment to, if I remember right?

Still, THX on DVD is a good thing. :D

    "Could you be more... specific?"

I've heard it pronounced both ways, so you can't go wrong.

    Here's my favorite line:

Are you now or have you ever been?

TFn says rumours indicates the following will be on the DVD:

    Audio commentary by George Lucas
Documentary - 'A Legacy Of Filmmakers - The Early Years Of Zoetrope'
Featurette - 'The Making Of THX 1138'
    Lucas Short Film

Seems Lucas has been doing quite a few commentaries lately, with this and the Star Wars DVD.

Hmm, I wonder if this could be GL's original student film he made when he was at USC?

If you're really interested, you can already buy the short THX 1138 4EB as part of a DVD: Chaos.

Or you can view a clip online from the USC Moving Image Archive: here (QuickTime).

As a sidenote, does anybody have complete student films from GL? The archive only has Look At Life in full, the others are just clips. Any help is appreciated, thanks. :)
