The Web site is waaaaay weird, nothing like the straightforward promotional stuff for SW or Indy.

With full DVD details too! As USA Today claims:

The restored version ? with cleaner video and Dolby Digital surround sound ? gets a revival starting Sept. 10 with theatrical showings in 20 cities, including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. On Sept. 14, the DVD THX 1138: The George Lucas Director's Cut arrives.

The two-disc collector's edition ($26.99; a single-disc version, $19.97) includes a making-of documentary; a documentary on Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope studio, which made its debut with THX 1138; and Lucas' student short that inspired the feature.

    Discuss.

Wow. That's the most original box art for a DVD I've ever seen. Really cool. I've seen THX and it's pretty interesting. A lot of odd humor in it which I didn't expect.

I am so excited over this! I knew it was coming out on DVD, but the news about a theatrical release is just awesome! As my favorite Lucas film, I'm ecstatic over the news.

The website is perfect. Gives me goosebumps! :D

This is a great film that will soon elevate to neoclassic status after the DVD release in the fall. Face it, most people outside of film buffs or Lucas obsessives have even seen it. True, they have been flipping through the channels and have come across a younger-looking, bald Duval with a silver-faced robotcop before. They stop, watch awhile, and finally say to themselves, "What the ____ is this?"

Exactly--and that's just one of the many aspects that makes this film terrific. In a picture with minimal dialogue, the new F/X will only add depth and speak volumes concerning how this 'Brave New World' society operates. I find it fascinating how THX-1138 was first released around the same time as Clockwork Orange, another retro-futuristic masterpiece.
Man, were the early 1970's just about the best, damn moment in cinematic history, or what!?!

I really love this film and I've wanted in on DVd since DVD was new. I've watched the new trailer several times and its real weird to see the new things George added, especially since I've seen the original several times. On one hand I'd like the origina version on DVD too, but I'm also veryy excited to see how the world o fthe film was expamded with these new shots,

I downloaded the trailer today and I only have one word to say.

    WOW!

I'll be renting this when it comes out. THX-1138 is one film I've always wanted to see but never have.

I understand the director's cut is rated R. I know the original film was rated PG yet it contained nudity and sex but did it have a lot of violence aswell?

    That trailer is GREAT!

I can't wait to see the film both
at the theatre and on DVD. I'm
already familiar with the old version,
but I want to see the enhanced version.

I wonder if the media will ignore the THX release in preference to the OT release on DVD?

In my opinion this is Lucas' greatest "film".
American Grafitti is his second greatest "film".

    The rest are all "movies".

We've got a digital projection theater here in Seattle, so I anxiously await the chance to see THX:1138 on the big screen.

I have the original on VHS, been waiting for the DVD. Glad to hear it's been restored, etc. - - but why oh why does this man feel the need to go back and add new crap? I don't get it. Wish he'd include the original along with the new "director's cut" on the DVD. But I'll take what I can get.

The trailer looks fantastic. The DVD box art is highly sophisticated.

This is great news, despite the addition of CGI crapola.

I'm actually quite looking forward to the additional CGI enhancements. IMHO, Lucas is just trying to improve upon what he has already created. :)

THX1138 is one of the most visually intriguing films I've ever seen. I expect the director's cut will only solidify my appreciation of it, and seeing it on a big screen will only make it better!

    Dear Mr. Lucas...

Don't be too proud of this technological terror
you've created. The ability to enhance a film
with modern CGI is insignificant next to the power
    of the original version. :)

j/k I'm ok with enhancements and in a way it's admirable he wants to improve his creations with advancements. I just think he goes a bit overboard.

I understand the director's cut is rated R. I know the original film was rated PG yet it contained nudity and sex but did it have a lot of violence aswell?

The film, as it was released in 1971, was 86 minutes long and rated PG. The film is now 95 minutes long and rated R. Note that the 86-minute original version has enough nudity and sexual dialiogue to likely be rated R by today's standards (including a long distance shot of LUH [Maggie McOmie] full frontal). As for the violence, it is mostly limited to the car chase, the police force shocking staffs, and off-screen assumptions. The violence is most likely a PG level.

On to the "new" version. A few pics for comparison:

    (WARNING: SPOILERS)

    First, the sky:

Then the previous scene before and after alteration:

The TV holograms, before and after:

(Although the sequence is long enough for both pics to still be in the film)

    Some new shots:

    Cops in "locker room":

Wide shot of factory (and yes, the yellow is to match the original coloring):

People walking w/ working elevators behind them:

    New crowd shot:

Shot with added people in background:

Altered crowd shot (room is bigger):

    New explosion shot:

The brief shot of THX's eyes rolled back in his head is a new effect, in the original he just stared straight ahead:

Thanks for those pictures, I didn't realise how similar in appearance some areas look to Kamino with the little Bobas.

I prefer the original holograms though, probably wont notice when watching the film - just hope it's showing at a cinema round by me...

The original holograms just look like double exposures. The new holograms look....like holograms.

I've somehow managed never to see a single bit of this film, even on cable. I'm glad that the first time I see it will be in George Lucas's new, definative version.
