It's number one because its star wars. Not because it was such a great movie. They pandered to the casual fans that just wanted to see more of the same from the OT, which is sad IMO.

 

It would have been number one even if the plot was original. It's still Star Wars.

 

I'm doubtful. An original movie, while still being successful, would've gotten some backlash for not being "Star Warsy" enough. People today simply like to see old stuff reused with modern technology, which is why Hollywood keep producing reboots (because they MAKE MONEY). TFA had stormtroopers, X-wings, TIE-fighters, and many other familiar OT aesthetics. Even the professional journalists who criticized TFA for being a rehash still gave the film a positive review with the motivation "isn't a rehash what we all wanted anyway!".
