ST TLJ Trailers and TV Spots Discussion

Luke was never intended to be especially special, apart from having some Force skills inherited from his father. His hero's journey was neatly completed in ANH. George then had to retrofit a bigger arc when he got budget for ESB, and then an even bigger arc for the PT. It was always a Heath Robinson construction built on flimsy foundations.

I therefore don't look for intellectual satisfaction in SW. The 'bigger' questions are always going to be clouds of fluff whose solidity is dependent on the actors speaking the lines (and the lines themselves, sandly speaking). None of it bears a close inspection. The 'Chosen One' concept was the result of a flat imagination and a desperate need to make three movies end with Luke Skywalker living on Tatooine. Anakin never at any time seems to have been more powerful than Palpatine, so his Chosen One status made no sense anyway.

 

The Navy Seal who shot OBL wasn't the "Chosen One" - He was just first up the stairs when guys peeled off to do other things...

 

Speaking of which, G R R Martin has gone on record to say he hates the chosen one trope and why many speculate there is no such chosen one.

The lack of Finn in the trailer is definitely a problem (one I don't think will be reflected in the film), but I think it does help to consider where TFA ended. After spending the whole movie looking for Luke, the movie ends on a dramatic cliffhanger of Rey, having just really discovered her force powers, going to be trained. Also, she somehow beat Kylo Ren, who just killed Han Solo. This is simply what is on the audience's mind leaving TFA, it's where the big question marks are.

The Resistance side of the story more or less ends in a relatively uninteresting victory after an uninteresting battle. Yes, Finn's in a coma, but is there really any question that he'll wake up? Plus there's no big, specific questions about Finn other than what's he gonna do next? Which can be said about literally all the characters.

I hope this is the right place to mention this, but while watching the official trailer I noticed a hint of the score from Revenge of the Sith playing when Rey reached out to take Ren's hand right there at the end, specifically the notes played when Anakin is looking out over the lava on Mustafar just following his execution of the Separatist leadership.

 

No, because it's already confirmed, Luke says, "Who are you" i'm guessing the full sentance will now be, "Who are you, Why are you here?"

 

Full dialog: Who are you? Why are you here? What is this? Do you know what this is? Who is with you? Do you also have Power Converters?

 

Have you been to Toshee Station? Do you know where it is? Have you seen my floppy hat?

 

Luke is all about the Power Converters.

 

Meh. He had the same amount of screen time as Leia, Poe, Phasma, and BB-8, and more than Snoke, the Praetorian Guards, Rose, DJ, and the lady with the purple hair, most of which received none.

Not bad for a character that is frankly pretty weak and uninteresting to many.

Yeah, instead of intelligent and insightful conversations, we get juvenile like wishes and predictions that only an eight year old would come up with. Some of these people just need to stop.

 

By 'International Trailer' do you mean the Japanese trailer? The Korean trailer? Or something else entirely?

 

Reminds me of something else:

 

The trouble is that showing a lightsaber reveals major plot points. This movie is so full of questions about who does what. It's the Breaking Bad of Star Wars in that it is full of mysteries and uncertain motivations.

But I'll take it if they show it.

 

Just show them playing poker or whatever they play on Alien Casinos and I will be happy until opening night!

There is a pair of gold dice dangling in the cockpit of the Falcon... though I have no idea if their claim that they are these type of dice is accurate.

 

No discussion on the International Trailer? If what I saw was legit, it’s the same and different. After Poe talks about burning the FO down, do we see KR and the KoR? And is it a flashback?
